BATTLEMODE Plays: Shadow Empire | Ice Planet Outpost | Episode 01 - Planet Generation & Round 1
Ойындар
Shadow Empire is my favourite strategy game, a masterpiece 4X/Wargame hybrid from VR Designs, published by Matrix. In this new series, I ramp the difficulty up to Extreme and play on what I expect to be a fairly difficult planet in the hopes of testing the AI out properly.
You can find the game at www.matrixgames.com.

I love how much there is to do/think about on turn 1
"favorite game of all time" The more i play.. The more i agree with this statement
Regarding temperature penalties, Combat Armor also keeps troops warmer or cooler than Envirosuits.

I've mixed feelings about the way this works: I've never seen temperature affect anything, since it's so easily countered. However, I can't imagine it'd be that fun to be losing hundreds of troops each turn from exposure, and the timeframe of the game means that you're not going to really be able to move troops in and out of shelter each season.
Your buggy is all right. Well worth using. I would field MGs and buggies and ignore rifle infantry for a bit. That being said, you do start with Carbine tech, so you can field carbines right away now.

Ah man, I don't want to spoil things but I had some problems with model design early into this game... good thing is that those excellent leaders I got will help eventually. On a map like this, a bad model can literally end your game if it's not fixed fast.
Dastactic, just as an example, is quite good at steamrolling this game, but I didn't find watching games nearly as interesting, because he says openly that he only plays on Siwa planets with lots of oil, and he always spams tanks. I think adjusting what units you use based on the rolls you get for your units, the resources you have available, and the terrain is really the meat and potatoes of the game.

Well said man. I've not watched Das play for a while actually, I do enjoy jumping onto his Twitch streams when I get the chance, but I rarely get time to stick around to really see how it is he's playing.

Siwa with plenty of Oil? Sounds like he's just...ahem, making simple content in a way he knows well. But then, that just may be what he finds fun.
Have watched you on Explorminate but didn't realize you had your own channel - and here I find you have a whole campaign of Shadow Empire on my favorite planet settings. Noice

I appreciate that. I'm sorry there's been a big stall in episodes, the next episode should be up tonight or tomorrow.
Came here after finally buying the game (after 2 years of, ahem, "playing it other ways") on steam with the latest Oceania dlc. No interest in ocean planets, so thats why i'm watching your old series instead, but the devs deserve the support. Also came here instead of dastactic because, while he's a great guy, he does suffer a bit from the "quill18 syndrome" of pausing and talking for 50 minutes solid about how you click the button to build units, instead of just building them and letting the audience SEE how it's done. Thank you for an excellent series and balance of explaining WHY you do things without teaching us how to click buttons. I'm grabbing my popcorn.

The mitia start is fine if you choose the Spread Out option, so you never start right next to a Major (or them to each other).
The only face-cam KZread I can stomach. Nicely done, Battle! You won me on the Triple Skull playthrough, and now I find something truly fantastic here!

Thanks! As for the web-cam, I don't use it that much at the moment, mostly because the fancy "youtube friendly" video camera I bought turned out to not be that good for streaming (it's high quality, but battery dies early unfortunately) so you'll find I phase it out after a few episodes. I've had mixed reactions from the face-cam. Most KZreadr's swear it gets them more views, but I'm not sure it's always necessary with strategy games. I've been a professional performer for years so I'm used to being on stage or in front of a camera but I think it needs to be used sparingly else it can be distracting.

@@battlemode i hate facecams, but i agree the games need to be more intense and fast paced, and not taking up a lot of screen real estate
I really like Mind as well. I tried Commerce and wasn't impressed. It's kind of useful early on, but the it became useless for me. I've tried Heart and it was quite nice. My units always had good morale.

I tend to go with Commerce early now, it raises QoL and thus pop/worker happiness which is crucial in the early game, especially if you're in a position where you're unable to get the public QoL buildings for whatever reason. I used to go Government for the BP bonus but I don't find I need it as much as I need a strong economy. Enforcement is a good one later on, when you have plenty of population and need the tax income.
interesting game :D i already subscribe my friend :D saludos desde Argentina 🇦🇷

Ah... KZread is rapidly becoming a platform unviable for small content creators. I can't speak for eXplorminate but personally speaking, I'm gonna be moving my stuff over to alternative media sites.

I think the graphucs are mostly very good, it's just the character art that is a bit lofi haha
One of the main issues I've always had with the game is just how different of a game the AI is actually playing. Without the need to operate much if any of an economy, only collecting resources, not needing to RNG roll for technology and models, they just send BP to directly buy what they want, free dirt roads even over mountains and 100% logistics so long as their forces have a tile connection to their capital, no matter the terrain can make playing kinda frustrating. No amount of mountains and swamps really matter to the AI, nor does distance, you can butt your head against the games logistic system all you want but the AI will cover entire continents without a care and attack with no actual supply lines that you the player needs to manage. I don't mind that the AI is bad, it just doesn't even play the same game as you. I'd almost rather fight against some rouge AI with robot armies, or mutant hordes, or native alien empires then a rival regime that has no reason not to be playing by the same rules as me. And I 100% believe that light tanks are trouble to deal with mostly because of the AI's cheating to unlock them super early, build massive formations of them with their 100% communist/hivemind resource economy, and the fact that AT guns are worthless in my experience. Never seen them work for me or the AI, tanks just kill them instantly. No idea what is up with them. RPGs in good terrain work all right however, flat ground is always going to be a tank war no matter the world (long term entrenchment with the right postures certainly helps though!). Precision bombers are sent by god. They slay.

I think I've covered this topic pretty thoroughly elsewhere as I've studied AI. The summary of this is that the game is so complex writing an AI that could play the game in a fun way if it used the same rules as the player would be practically impossible because of the sheer complexity involved. Almost no video games do, either, unless they're very simple like Chess. Name any strategy game you care to think of and I'd be willing to bet it also has a similar, stripped down set of rules to the player. ROTP is one exception I can think of but the difference in complexity between that and Shadow Empire is huge. I'm fairly sure that if Vic hadn't detailed the rule changes, most players wouldn't have noticed. This is a problem that has faced game designers since game AI began, and it's dealt with in varying ways. TLDR: nearly all game AI's use different rulesets, it's just some developers are more transparent about it that others.

@@battlemode Interesting contrast here. This video is mostly about making sure the game is not too easy and comment goes into how the AI is cheating (and thus too hard??)
@coolnamebro
11 ай бұрын
@Mazth The AI isn't cheating. It's playing using different mechanics to the player, just as the AI does in any complex strategy game. Because of this, it's been intentionally balanced so it doesn't just automatically destroy the player every single game. If it was cheating it would be given an unfair advantage and the player would rarely win, if ever.
