An isolated American island in the Pacific Ocean is held out by a small US Marine garrison against the Imperial Japanese Navy. Did you Know? The US Marines wore the M1917 helmet early on in the war. The Special Naval Landing Forces (SNLF) were the marines of the Imperial Japanese Navy. They had a anchor as the badge on their helmets.

An interesting fact: Bill Nye’s father worked on Wake Island during the raid. Two weeks later, Japan’s navy captured his father. Science-loving father Ned Nye was taken prisoner by the Japanese while he was working as a civilian on a re-fueling dock on Wake Island in early December 1941. Ned Nye spent the entire length of World War II in a Japanese prison camp without lights or electricity. The elder Nye kept from going crazy by building and studying sundials.

No but a undermanned defense will take all it can get to defend the civis wanted to help and were put in positions of importance for the defense! Now i assume some were givin rifles and other small arms but extra browning's don't hurt and who knows mabey some had prior backgrounds or learned on the spot. Smart no practical and helpful in manning a defense and holding off Japanese soldiers yea.

The only surviving Hawaiian rail, the Laysan Crake, was actually rescued when some specimens were introduced to Midway Atoll before the species went extinct on Laysan Island due to habitat loss. Then, in 1943, navy ships arrived at Midway and introduced black rats to the atoll, which rapidly drove the Laysan Crake to extinction. World War II was simply not a time for caring about animals.

The Battle of Wake Island was known as the “Alamo of the Pacific.” 🇺🇸🇯🇵 The Japanese DID NOT make a first landing. Their invasion fleet was repulsed by Marine coastal artillery. It was the RETURN of the Japanese invasion fleet with reinforcements on the SECOND assault that made the successful landing. The Japanese also massacred 98 POWs there in 1943.

The garrison's 5" guns and Wildcat fighters drove off the first landing attempt with only minor losses to itself. The Japanese didn't manage to land troops until their second attempt. BAPTISED IN FIRE, FORTY TO ONE! So silent before the storm, Awaiting command. A few have been chosen to stand, As one, outnumbered by far. The orders from high command: Fight back, hold your ground! In early September it came, A war unknown to the world. No army may enter that land, That is protected by POLISH HAND! Unless you are 40:1, Your force will soon be undone, UNDONE!

Ituloy ang laban para sa mga bayani ngayon at ang Depensa ng Bataan at Corregidor. Mabuhay ang bawat Pilipino!

The fear of the Japanese to not use the Yamato until it was too late for anything more than a suicide run is just a fucking tragedy. Yamato, Musashi, Hood, Arizona... Machines like that have a soul, I'm sure of it and to be cut down without a chance to do what they were built for is just cruel...

@@Archris17 The Japanese knew that it was really only good for morale. It had the disadvantage of being both expensive (in terms of manpower and material) and vulnerable to air attacks. Midway demonstrated the advantages of carriers for finding and sinking the enemy. It became clear that the Yamato was best used where air cover was available, hence why she was used sparingly.
