An account of the anti-poll tax demonstration on 31st March 1990. Raising questions about public order policing, the independence and accountability of the media and the right to demonstrate.
An account of the anti-poll tax demonstration on 31st March 1990, one that is radically different from that presented by TV news. Eyewitnesses tell their stories against a backdrop of video footage showing the days events as they unfolded. Demonstrators' testimonies raise some uncomfortable questions: Questions about public order policing, the independence and accountability of the media and the right to demonstrate.

David Meynell never mentioned his officers attacking disabled protesters before trouble started.
I'd been at work all day in Lambeth and forgot about the demo. at 5pm I came up the escalator from the tube at Covent Garden into a war zone, nothing can describe it, the riot was at its peak and this was the epicentre of it at 5pm, I made it to the comedy club and they let me in I bought a pint and stood watching it all happen out the window, upturned cop cars on fire, horse baton charges, petrol bombs, I saw some guys looting the SWISS centre of the Rolex Cartier & TAG etc watches, there was so much happening all at once it was hard to take in, its hard to explain but it all seemed like a scene from a film, at 5pm in Covent Garden I would usually see street entertainers, singers, musicians, storytellers and the fire juggler who was there every Saturday night, my mind wasn't programmed to accept what was happening. .
This is a garden party compared to what is coming in the UK!

There was a really funny scene during these riots where a Police car (Ford Granada) had a traffic cone thrown in through its back window! And you see it scarpering up the Strand away from Trafalgar Square! Priceless!
I remember at the time thinking how disgraceful the "rioters" were, but since going on the anti lockdown demos in London I have seen how brutal the police really are. A real eye opener.
