@@AndromedaPrima I would argue the war was already lost by that point. Even had Hannibal been victorious at Zama, what then? Carthage did not have the resources (nor the will) to continue the war against a resurgent Rome. Nor did they have any capable generals besides Hannibal. At best they could have retaken some lost territories in southern Spain. But they were undone after losing consecutive battles outside of Italy. Their recruitment, military structure and coordination just weren't up to scratch. Added to which they were always at a disadvantage due to their lack of naval superiority. I believe Hannibal realised this a few years earlier with the death of his brother, Hasdrubal. I could be wrong about this part though

It is tragic that Marcellus doesn't get more attention. He was genuinely a brilliant commander, and without his years of matching Hannibal in the south, none of the successes of Scipio, which happened in the absence of Hannibal, and were predicated on Hannibal's absence from the field of battle, would have been possible. The guy deserved to be recognised as Rome's MVP.

Fascinating. Had never examined any of Hannibal's post-Cannae campaigns in such detail before. Overall the 14yr or so timeframe between Cannae and when he leaves Italy is him marching all around central and southern Italy at will defeating Roman armies on several more occasions without apparently getting nearer his goal. In their defense it was not an easy task to sent reinforcements there directly with the roman control or at least presence in Sicily and Sardinia any convoy sent to the italian shore had a very risky task ahead and at least one they sent reinforcements but they forced to sent them to Iberia / Hispania when the Scipios were becoming a danger there; I don't think there was much enthusiasm among mercenaries to go and fight in the of war against Rome either. While the effort of the City Fathers cannot be described as wholehearted since they mistrusted Hannibal as much as they mistrusted his father still was in their best interests to win the war but directly sent aid to Hannibal in middle of Italy was not easy at all so they ones they sent were mostly directed to Hispania and the idea was that from there they should reinforce the army in Italy which was what ended happening when Hasdrubal and Mago before the Battle of the Metaurus and the Po Valley Raid.

I read that Hannibal wanted to return to southern Italy when he became a part of the Seleucid empire and was convinced that this was the way to beat the Romans. Would have been interesting if Antiochus the third had given him the go ahead to do so (would have been very tough to get there i imagine)

Sorry but by that time Roman general were at same level strategist as scipio because Rome have a tendency to learn their mistakes so hannibal would fair even worst them he did during the second punic war especially that Rome had Nubian cavalry on their side this time plus the Macedonian sided with him. The answer is simple avoid any engagement that hannibal wanted and only engaged him in favourable terrian you will see that hannibal indeed lost some battles which weren't major and not had any impact in the war but shown that even the best of best general struggles. Same would have happened if Alexander invaded Italy it's that either the Roman simple engaged him in favorable terrian or don't engaged him .
