Botev disembarked near Kozloduy and, together with every member of the company, ritualistically kissed the soil of the Homeland. As the rebels proceeded inland, they gradually realised, that despite previous misleadingly enthusiastic messages by the local "apostles", the 3rd Revolutionary District had not risen. Furthermore, due to the violent suppression of the uprising proceeding elsewhere in the Bulgarian-populated territories, the entire Ottoman military machine, including regular army garrisons and irregular bashi-bazouks, was mobilised and thickly patrolling the area. Botev and his staff officers decided to press on to the comparative safety of the Vratza Mountains while trying to rouse the Bulgarian population on their way. The population intimidated by the overwhelming Ottoman military presence refused to be incited into any overt sign of rebellion.
The company almost immediately became the focus of incessant bashi-bazouk attacks. Voinovski displayed some excellent defensive tactics helped by the still high morale and discipline of the company. On 18 May the massing bashi-bazouks caught up with the company in force and Botev had to go to ground on the Milin Kamak Hill some 50 km from the Danube. Under Voinovski’s skilful command the rebels managed to hold off the numerically superior Ottoman irregulars without taking serious casualties until the arrival of two companies of regular troops. The regulars using two light artillery pieces and their superior rifles managed to inflict heavy casualties among the rebels from a safe distance, but their three attempts to follow up with frontal charges were repulsed by disciplined rebel fire. The company lost about 30 killed or wounded. According to their custom the Ottomans ceased hostilities with nightfall and the rebels split into two groups and managed to slip through the enemy lines and continue their forced march towards the mountains.

Bulgarian are from turkish tatar origin they lost their language after 200 hundred year after they come on Balkan and start using slavic language .Also they were liberated by Russians from Otoman Turkey and Russia create Bulgaria as state.

@@pinklady2151 Bulgaria is the oldest country in Europe not changing its name. It is established in 681! and continue to exists until 1396 when concurred by Otomans. We had big uprising in 1876 which Ottomans drown in blood. It such a massacre that Europe was horrified and agreed to let Russians free hand in dealing with Ottomans. If the uprising had not taken place there would have been no war. Europe at that time was adamant that Russia should not go south to capture Bosforus. Crimean war 20 years ago was exactly for this reason. After bloody but successful Russo-Ottoman war in 1877-1878 the principality of Bulgaria was establish. After more than 400 years we had our own country again.

thats not ottoman army. these are irregular bashi-bazouks. they were mostly muslim bulgarians / pomaks and muslim albanians.

That was uprising of Bulgarians.Those were not supported by Russians.Russians wanted totake Constantinople.Bulgarians were on their way. Onthis battle died Botev. A revolutionary who had escaped Russia andexile on Siberia. All Bulgarian revolutanaries were aware what a shit hole is Russia Emmpire
in ww1 bulgaria had to be assisted by Turkish forces to counter the attacks of Romanian and Tsar Russians in Galicia ... this is a fact
While the Turks were fighting on the fronts in the Ottoman Empire, military service was not compulsory for the minorities. If the Ottoman Empire was imperialist, if it asked for English, the most spoken language in the world would be Turkish.

What I remember from University knowledge about Bulgarians is there are mixed nation: Slavonic People with one of Turkish tribe from Asia who had arrived from Asia to present Bulgaria Area at first to fight for this Bulgarian Land then to create the Bulgaria Kingdom state. Most of the European NATION and countries are mixed ones: 1) Great Britain mixed of Celts, Scandinavians, Romans, Anglosaxons, Vikings,French Normas + nowadays People from the former British colonies,etc- so is the same with the ENGLISH language that is mixed of Celtic, Latin, Old Western German, Scandinavian languages, French,etc.
