Battle of Lexington & Concord | 2023 Reenactment

Lexington and Concord Bridge re-enactments from a Battalion soldiers perspective!
Recently resurfaced footage meant we could put a video out on this event. The SD cards from the other perspectives and battles are currently missing!
If you live in the North East and are interested in joining us, visit redcoat.org
His Majesty's Tenth Regiment of Foot in America is a historically re-created infantry unit formed to portray the service of the British Army during the American War for Independence.
Composed of three types of soldier, Grenadiers-typically larger men who are used as shock troops, a company of Light infantry, generally smaller, more agile men--capable of maneuvering in the dense wilderness to skirmish or flank the enemy, and a battalion company--a company of regular soldiers, capable of mass volleys and were the heart of the army and are trained in both Grenadier and Light Infantry tactics. We also have a company of Music, who provide music and commands to the army. Last but certainly not least, a Corps of Civilian Volunteers--who provide food to the regiment during encampments and accurately portray civilian and camp life of the 18th century. Each is open for recruitment. The members of the Tenth are accurately uniformed, equipped, and trained in 18th-century military drill and life so that we appear in public as members of the British Army would have in 1775. Hi George, Cpl Zaslow here. I run the channel and I will break the facade of “10th Regiment” for this comment. I’ll have you know that I am a Lieutenant in the Marine Corps and the 10th is proud to have multiple other active, reserve and veterans in our ranks. We reenact as we are passionate about our history, regardless of service. Hope this educated you on your uninformed comment.

    @@HansWurst1569 As far as I'm aware, some reenactments have a system where everytime you load a round. a random piece of paper will be coloured differently, which means next time someone shoots at you, you're "dead". As a civil war reenactor, i can appreciate reenactors taking hits and making it more historically accurate and interesting for the audience. I used to get annoyed when we'd have volleys for 5-10 minutes and nobody would be falling to the ground. The crowds would also lose interest and walk away. It looks stupid when no one takes hits

    @@DangerRussDayZ6533yes and no. The English like to pretend that absolutely everyone and everything in the colonies was British and loved Britain before the war. This is not the case and most communities in my home state of Pa spoke German at the time and came from the HRE or Switzerland. Delaware and new jersey were mostly made up of dutch and swedish and new York was a mixed bag. New england and the south were the only places were they were dominant and even in those areas the French and the Spanish respectively still had influence. The Americans were not just British people living in a different place. The culture and lifestyles were completely different regardless of the shared ethnic ancestry. And for the vast majority of places In the country the soldiers and even the "regulars" that the Americans would've interacted with would've been from their own local communities. I don't mean to rant but I'm a little sick of British people insisting the war was a civil war between the same people because it's far more complex than that. And your accent would make it less realistic. The roticity in English accents have changed since then. The modern American accent more closely resembles British English of the 17th and 18th centuries than the English one of today.

    In the 6th grade, our teacher for whatever reason owned hundreds of 1700's musket replicas. They split the entire 6th grade class into minute men and red coats. I was personally was part of his majesty's army that died in battle that day. The entire 6th grade class did a reenactment of the Battle of Lexington & Concord. For over a month, our teacher who owned the muskets rehearsed with us and taught us marching, how to reload the muskets we were using, gave us roles to actual historical figures at that time. We shot blanks at each other in front of our parents (with signed permission) and wore period pieces that were pretty close to the times. Learned a lot and didn't realize how special this was until I was a lot older. I'm now 29 years old and will never forget that day. It was intense for our little minds, but i loved it.

    My ancestor, a Captain Francis Marsden of the 5th Regiment of Foot MIGHT have been at Lexington with his regiment/Concord. What I do know, he was one of several Captain's in the 5th Regiment to be wounded at the Battle of Bunkers Hill. He returned home to Yorkshire, where he died at Burntwood Hall, aged 27 5 years later in 1780. His sister later named her son John Francis Carr in his memory. There is a monument at Wakefield Cathedral, Yorkshire in Captain Francis Marsden's memory and that of his parents. My great grandmother was a Marsden.

    It is amazing that back then, the traffic lights were candle lit. And a child was hoisted into the air to change the red to green. All for some bread and cheese. The day of the British invasion that little boy kept the red candle on extra-long. So that Mr. Revere could have much more time to drive his jeep and warn the good people of Concorde & Lexington. Most of the casualties were heart failure related. Back in those days, people were morbidly obese and read books, which required lots of sitting. Most soldiers put a knife on the end of their stick gun to butter their bread and cut ham. Lunch and then some fighting.

    @@apo1861 Taxation was part of it, but the shooting didn't start until the Brits tried taking guns. In fact, a very small number of the population of the colonies wanted to fight. Like less than 10%. But the crux of the issue was taxation without representation in Parliament while still being a British territory. Now we have Congress and senators. How much representation you have at the federal level mostly comes down to your elected representatives. So if they fail to do an adequate job of representing your state, you primary them accordingly. The second amendment exists to ensure that the government plays by their own rules.

  • @HM10thFoot

    @HM10thFoot

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Marvin, Thanks for your comment! You raise an interesting and commonly asked point. Chris actually hinted at this as well. The fact that due to the lack of recordings of English accents from the time period, it is challenging to authentically determine how soldiers would have sounded. It's worth noting that modern British accents evolved from the Victorian era, and we know that the Victorian era British accent was drastically different than the ones preceding it. Therefore, accurately portraying something without concrete historical knowledge is indeed a tricky task. Thus we choose to speak in our native accents rather than poorly fake an accent that we aren't even sure is correct! By the way, I highly recommend checking out Chris' amazing channel, where he delves into this very question! Best regards, Your friends in the 10th Regiment!

    @@HM10thFoot I would say Victorian English slowly rippled from London outward over the course of the late 19th and early 20th century, but to date regional accents still prevail very strongly in England. Although, this is changing quicker than ever before because of modern tech. I personally think it is a common misconception in the US that all English speak in a uniform posh English accent. Even Shakespeare is meant to be read by someone who sounds more like Blackbeard the Pirate and less like Ian McKellen, but that is a conversation for another time. What I would say though, is that it is widely believed that you, the Americans, pronounce words truer to the way in which 18th English people once spoke. So, by default, your own accents are closer than most modern Englishmen. That said, if you look at the accent of those on the Island of Tangier, VA that accent remained mostly isolated from mainland U.S and therefore remained truer to a colonial accent. Now, should you KZread this accent, look for a short 2min video from “People Like Us” and you will hear an Anglo-American accent that is very similar to that of a modern West Country accent, which has not changed to drastically in England in the last 300 years. So, in terms of getting a “real” accent for re-enactment, I would say forget Jason Issacs from The Patriot and be a bit more flexible with your vowels. You guys, as I said, are the real English speakers! Good job guys!
