There’s been a lot of talk about protecting our rights,
the right to keep and bear the arms that we’ll need for the fight.
And while we’ve clung to that amendment with all of our might
other rights have been withdrawn.
The right to representative democracy is done.
It is money that’s selecting all the candidates who run.
It is money buying policies that impact everyone,
and we fell for the con.
Tyranny just overthrew you.
Your gun’s no use ‘cause they outdrew you.
But you don’t realize it do you,
that the truth is now long gone.
Our leaders passing laws that only benefit the rich:
They take our last resources with a clever bait and switch.
HMOs and banks and corporate CEOs that they enrich,
and that’s what’s going on.
Most voters favor tighter regulations on the banks,
and taxes for the billionaires but they just say, “No thanks!"
‘Cause that, of course, is socialism, you fill in the blanks,
but it’s you they prey upon.
Don’t let the party platform fool you.
Excuse us for a moment while we school you.
You can’t let partisanship rule you,
or the madness will go on.
Our right to privacy is gone. Devices are the spies.
For government surveillance, those are now the ears and eyes.
They use the corporate data - no subpoenas, no surprise,
and still, we don’t catch on.
You can now be fired for expressing what you think,
whether you’re at work or doing dishes in your sink.
Your union cannot help you, they fell prey to doublethink.
They lost the marathon.
You decide who’s gonna rule you
Look beyond the red and blue
to find a way you can cut through
the corruption that lives on.
You have no right to education if among the poor.
And if you try, a life of debt is what you have in store
Education is related to the years you are good for,
and those years are soon gone.
Corporations freely do their business as monopolies.
They are poisoning the planet and they do just as they please.
Destroying the free market while they spread like a disease,
as they keep marching on.
No longer can we just stick to the
party politics due to the
fact that they are out to screw ya
and that you can count on.
Fifty companies provided all the news in ’84.
Now there’s only six - it's 44 less than it was before.
A media consensus now exists for every war,
and the wars go on and on.
There’s a way we can recover if we wake up and get smart.
It will be a long slow process but a step is still a start.
Instead of choosing from the menu, we must order a la carte
’til the party power is gone.
We’re the ones who hold the power.
This has to be our finest hour.
We’re the ones we must empower,
so the truth goes marching on.
HISTORY OF THE SOURCE MATERIAL
The "Battle Hymn of the Republic", also known as "Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory" to people who don't live in the US, was written by American writer Julia Ward Howe using the tune of "John Brown's Body."
Howe’s lyrics were penned in November of 1861, and first published in The Atlantic Monthly in February 1862. The song links the judgment of the wicked at the end of the age (Old Testament, Isaiah 63; New Testament, Rev. 19) with the American Civil War. Since that time, it has become an extremely popular and well-known American patriotic song.
Kimball's battalion was dispatched to Murray, Kentucky early in the Civil War, and Julia Ward Howe heard this song during a public review of the troops outside Washington D.C. on Upton Hill, Virginia. Rufus R. Dawes, then in command of Company "K" of the 6th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, stated in his memoirs that the man who started the singing was Sergeant John Ticknor of his company. Howe's companion at the review, The Reverend James Freeman Clarke, suggested to Howe that she write new words for the fighting men's song. Staying at the Willard Hotel in Washington on the night of November 18, 1861, Howe wrote the verses to the "Battle Hymn of the Republic." Of the writing of the lyrics, Howe remembered:
"I went to bed that night as usual and slept, according to my wont, quite soundly. I awoke in the gray of the morning twilight; and as I lay waiting for the dawn, the long lines of the desired poem began to twine themselves in my mind. Having thought out all the stanzas, I said to myself, "I must get up and write these verses down, lest I fall asleep again and forget them." So, with a sudden effort, I sprang out of bed and found in the dimness an old stump of a pen which I remembered to have used the day before. I scrawled the verses almost without looking at the paper."

This is the 10th time I've watched this in the past 18 hours, and now I go directly to crying and goosebumps, do pass go, do not laugh, and yet I still can't stop watching. I've been saying for years, Big Brother is here and he is us. (needless to say I don't feed the monster with smart phone videos.....it's the least I can do....Big Brother sure doesn't look like what I expected).

I agree--I can watch these over and over and the frustration at having such a loser in the highest position with his yes men.... And I alternate between chills, tears, anger .....and wondering how long until this is past tense? Will we ever be normal again?! This can't be real-- it has to be a terrible "Twilight Zone" episode!

sorry a parody is something true and we laugh be we see don caron and his dopple gangers or was that of him in disguise to save on helpers payroll. in second grade version of parody project for the battle hymn of the so called republican party. it goes back to the 1960s when corporal punishment was allowed at home at public school and catholic school glory glory haleijuia (sp?) teacher hit me with a ruler glory glory had a lou ya teacher slapped my butt with a paddle. glory glory halle you ya. or something like that. red skelton said best good night may god bless and the devil miss and may he never try again.

The term parody is used where one takes a song and rewrites the lyrics as to insert a different shade or nuance of meaning from the original. This is typically done to pay musical homage to the original in its own right, and to make use of musical device dating from the romantic period (roughly middle 1800s-early 1900s ). While some parodies are humorous or satire, not all are necessarily intended to be so. Parody and scherzo were commonly used as political devices from the era of the original 13 colonies. (This sort of thinv is backdrop from which many patriotic songs in the American repritoire were composed.)
I hope everybody in our country hears this song. It was all beautifully worded 🥲

@@oldrrocr It's true, but it was true for 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, and 1987. That he chose 1984 in particular (presumably, with the intent being to reference George Orwell's book) was the clever part.
This song just becomes more relevant as the years drag forward... we're closer and closer to the edge every day now.. ❤ thank you for singing for the people ❤

I still watch and listen to this at least weekly For a year Unfortunately it never gets old . I have sent it to everyone I know and they have done same and on and on It’s never been a more important message It just keeps getting worse by the minute The music somehow soothes me . Your incredible talent and beautiful voice and uncanny ability to put these words together. Better than all of the talking heads put together

This is the first parody I heard and the truth and importance of the lyrics struck me. Now, having listened to it probably 50 or more times, I am really impressed by the intricacies of the parts, the timing, changes of which guy sings what when is pretty amazing. It must have been a heck of a job planning that all out. You are one extremely talented person.
Don is an amazing musician and brings us great messages and smiles with that skill.
Fantastic! As the original Battle Hymn of the Republic led a nation into a war to end slavery, let's hope this version leads us to fight against the slavery of the oligarchs... Power to the people, not the corporations!

A lot of the brilliance here is in the mixdown, but some composer did a superb job of arranging the parts, and the vocalist did an outstanding job of *singing* them. And it's topical, too! Outstanding work. And if this is all Don's work, so much the more impressive. Keep it up!

Every facet of this singer/writer/performer/critic/analyst reflects both his brilliance and the flaws of our society. Bravissimo! Just one more reason that I love a capella singing and "virtual choirs."
This was extremely well done and hit a lot of very vital parts including the need to ignore party politics and focus on who is pulling the strings . No progress happens until Citizens United is repealed.
This deserves an award for most realistic satire and social commentary in a song.

There is a movement afoot to bring things back to balance, but it is a long run, like a marathon, it takes each citizen watching and listening to candidates before and after elections.

Back then this beautiful melody was your answer to slavery, now there is no more slavery. but her wounds have still not healed over the years. There are those among you who regard the Confederate flag as their heritage. How would you US-Americans react if we raised the Nazi flag? not good, is it? it appears that this song, the Battle Hymn of the Republic, has lost its meaning. you are beaten up, pepper sprayed, teargased, shot and torn by those who have sworn an oath to serve and protect you. give this song this inspiring song back its meaning. you have been missled . you are afraid of terrorists, look to Washington DC , there are the terrorists, the criminals, these traitors to their own people.

@@raphaelr1060 It is an absurd comparison, the confederate battle flag and the Nazi Swastika. Most legal scholars would agree that voluntary succession from the union was legal, after all, if being in the union was not voluntary then remaining would have to be by force. Of course no one was forced, or I should make that no non-slave was forced, to remain in a state that left the union and there was a lot of state swapping right before the war started. So the confederates were NOT traitors for wanting to leave the union. Of course as always victors write the history after every war and yes,after the war the south was forced to rejoin the union.
