There is a rather primitive German pun used here: "Nebelwerfer" mean litteraly "Fog-thrower". The spoonerism Webel nerfen is: Webel (or Weibel - depending on German dialect - Swiss-German is Weibel - Bern dialect is the only language to knowledge that does perfectly fine without vowels) is an abbrevation of "Feldwebel" or (approx.) corporal. Nerfen means getting on your nerves - or giving apprehension. Just a small WW2 popular linguistics.

I recently changed my Avatar to a photo of a early T-72 , in hopes you would soon do a review. The photo in question got a lot of play in the late 1970s because it gave a clear image of many of the T-72's features. At the time most in the press praised the T-72, which in reality they knew very little about. And would go so far as to suggest that we should produce T-72s instead of M-1s. I recall one such "Well researched article attacking the drivers compartment after Congresswoman Pat Schroeder claimed that a person taller than 5ft would not fit inside the M-1s drivers compartment. I suspect no one showed her the latch to lower the seat. And for some reason the reporters had the impression that the M-60 had such tough tracks that it could just twirl around in place and dig itself in, while the inferior M-1 required bulldozers to accompany them to perform the same function. I suspect they mistook the fact that M-60s had a blade tank in every company but at the time we were still developing a blade attachment for the M-1. Either way, I'm looking forward to a honest assessment of our Cold War foe.

  • @Feiora

Was that really how the american press and congressional personnel viewed the M1, M60, and T-72? Were these made in attempt to scuttle the M1 program in favor of something else or just trying to cut military spending cause the military was not being viewed very positively at the time? I'm from the mid 80s so I missed out on alot of things...

The Scud launcher is awesome, maybe there's an old Soviet soldier out there who could team up to help with an Inside the Hatch for it! There's something about them, vehicles with that posture are incredibly mean-looking, in the same sort of way certain furnaces are. It's hard to describe, but it's there; the artist for Mad Max: Fury Road originally based their designs for the heavy trucks on this series of truck. Comically, the Soviets also built a sedan on one of the launcher trucks, I'm not sure what it was used for but with winter the way it is in Russia I'm sure they found use.

So here's the fun part about that (I work at the museum.) We had trouble finding the key used to open the hatches on Russian tanks. In fact, we had to use a prybar and a screwdriver to open the hatches on the T-34/76 so we could get it off the trailer. With no luck on the T-72, we used the DShK we found in the T-55 to fit out the T-72, only to finally get the T-72's hatches open later to find an NSVT in *it.* Long story short, the T-55 has an NSVT and the 72 has the DShK. Ah, the stomach battalions. *Funny thing about the reenactors/Sealed Knot etc in Brit, they all hate the Romans, 'cos unlike the Galloglass' or Saxon fyrd or Vikings, the portly middle-aged bankers of the legions kit costs a packet compared to old sack cloth & a kitchen knife.

No, as long as the vehicle can move, has correctly functioning head and tail lights and can reach the average official highway speed, its good enough. Unlike the UK, America doesn't have anything so demanding and ruling as MOT, in fact most of the vehicles that fail MOT in the UK would perfectly fine to drive in America and if something goes wrong just take it to the dealer or a vehicle repair place of your choice and have them inspect and fix it. There is semi-optional service plan you can get from the dealer you get vehicle from if its one the big brand name companies and its one of their brand products, but on the whole you just drive til something fails then go get it fix and then go back to driving til the next thing fails...

Depends on the State. Texas, until this year apparently, worked off the basis of "Do the lights work? Is it leaking? You're good...". California was a bit more involved, including an emissions test at the tailpipe.

Any further you'd be better off barefoot. They do polish up good, though... But I don't think that that's a thing, these days...

This just confirms my view that people involved with the preservation of military vehicles and re-enactors aren't ever on the same wavelength. If you're keeping a 80 year old track laying vehicle going you don't give a damn about if your badges are right...
