    Can't even imagine a real sea battle with old warships. The power in those things and the smoke combined with all the panic and noice would be fucking horrible. Getting bombarded by a Manowar ship with 56 cannons in each broadside while in a wooden ship is pretty much the worst thing I can think of.

    ***** Training in this case lasts about as long as it takes for a round or two to hit your little section of the gun deck. When you have heavy wood splinters the size of lances flying at you, through you and around you. Bloody screaming and getting the hell away from that is all that's on your mind. Not too mention careening 5, 6, 10, 17 and greater shot in your face. No gunner would sit still and let himself be shredded like paper if he had the chance to flee.

    I've been at both of the ships. The Shtandart was sailing to my city at the Netherlands and was docked for 2 weeks in Dordrecht. Not a very fair fight if it had been for real. Shandart was built 1703 and carried 20 6pdr guns and 8 3pdr guns, for a broadside weight of 72 pounds. She displaced 220 tons and had a crew of 120. Götheborg was built 1739 and carried 30 6pdr guns, for a broadside weight of 90 pounds. She displaced 1 200 tons and had a crew of 144. Untless Shtandart, with her more well-armed crew could board and win, the Götheborg can take much more punishment and deal out more too, due to her larger size and more numerous guns.

  • @antonbrakhage490

    @antonbrakhage490

    You may be discounting manueverabillity here. Shtandart looks a lot lighter, probably more nimble. If it could get behind or in front of Gotheborg and then blast away... Also I'm not sure how Swedish crews compared to Russian ones in terms of skill/training in that era, but I'd expect all other things being equal for a naval crew to be better in a fight than the crew of a merchantman. But yeah, in a straight broadside gunnery duel, the greater size and heavier broadside of the Gotheborg would probably be decisive. Boarding would be dicey for Shtandart too, as the greater height of Gotheborg's deck and masts means its crew could fire down from cover onto the exposed deck of Shtandart. A volley of grapeshot as the crew tried to board would be murderous.

  • @GefreitervonAdler

    @GefreitervonAdler

    @@antonbrakhage490 yes, if Shandart can rake Götheborg, it is pretty much over. It would depend on the wind conditions and which ship was upwind, and thus had the ability to manouvre. Both ships are full-rigged ships, so their ability to sail against the wind would be similar. Manouvrable did not mean the same thing during the age of sail as it does today. That said Götheborg was an east indiaman, a merchant ship, while Shandart was a ship of war, so I would expect the Russian frigate to have a more well-trained crew and be much stronger in a boarding action.

    Love this. I've been doing a bunch of pirate research lately, and these ships (or rather, the originals they are replicas of) are pretty close to the sorts of ships the most successful pirates would have commanded, and attacked. I did some quick Wikipedia research after watching this, and Shtandart was operational all through the end of the Golden Age of Piracy, and carried the exact same number of guns as Black Sam Bellamy's Whydah Galley. The bigger Gotheborg was built a bit later, but in size is a pretty close match to Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge (which carried some canons of Swedish make). Also a video of a Swedish and Russian ship facing off seems weirdly fitting, considering who just joined NATO today.

To fight under sail, they would have to be too far out in the bay for sightseers to even watch. Either that or possibly risk fetching up on that breakwater if the wind and tide was uncooperative.

    If the wind isn't in your favor (you can see there's little to no wind in the video) or if you don't have the wheater gauge it was a common practice to use longboats or horses on land to manoeuver the ship into port. Since neither really create the feeling of a naval battle, using a diesel motor is the only option. Fine example is the Batavia, a dutch 17th century East India Man replica which was transported to Sidney for the Olympic games in 2002 or so I believe. There she sailed on her own power for the very first time (she has no motor) but had to be towed out of the port first for a couple of miles, since it's damn hard to control a wooden vessel in a port. Not having a motor brings many problems, even though I love the Batavia the way she is. Right now she's rotting away in a lake where her keel is touching the bottom and can't sail away due to not having a motor. A shame really.

    Actually size is not important in this case. Shtandart is a war frigate with trained crew and boarding action capabiliies, while gohteborg is cargo trader ship, not intended to fight, but just to proect itself from raiders. Also they have approximately same quanity of guns, but big ghoteborg is easier to hit, then smaller shtandart. So historically, maybe shandart would have more chanses to win in such a fight.

    +TrueBlogge777 I know this is an old post, but, I just saw the vid. Actually, I think the smaller ships guys, even at that range, would do minimal damage to the hull of the other ship, it would be best to fire grape or canister towards the gunports and hope to get her gun crews, the bigger ship would fire over the hull on purpose...it would take out the smaller vessels rigging in a flash, then the small one would have no way...she would be boarded, and most likely, depending on crew....taken a prize! But, yeah, since they are not sail powered....it's all conjecture.

  • @MinSredMash

    @MinSredMash

    8 жыл бұрын

    +vinsanchez1066 And what knowledge are you basing this on? Shtandard (the smaller ship) carried guns capable of penetrating the sides of every ship ever built, until the age of ironclads. She would actually have superior firepower and similar crew size, relative to the merchantman.

  • @vinsanchez1066

    @vinsanchez1066

    8 жыл бұрын

    No practical experience or knowledge of course...as I never served aboard a wooden ship, but a fairly decent amount of readings on shot and sail battles from US and UK naval history. That being said, there is a significant difference between penetrating the "side" of a ship as you say, compared to penetrating the "hull." Putting a ball through the gunnels and sending splinters everywhere would make for a messy deck, but that doesn't mean it could do the same damage at or below the waterline which would cause her to take on more water than her pumps could spit out, Now, if the ship has carronades, yes, it would do serious damage to anyone unlucky enough to come along sides with her. Alas, I was giving an opinion based on what I saw, and MORE often than not, smaller ships that did not have carronades, did not have the capacity to carry serious ship sinking broadsides of iron...HENCE, why they would target rigging, masts, steerage and personnel. What do you base your statements on? I'm always eager to learn something new.

    Yup. Gotheborg is the bigger ship by far, presumably more durable. Its greater height would also have been a huge advantage at close range or during boarding, as its crew could have fired down from cover onto the deck of Shtandart. On the other hand, Shtandart would likely have been more manueverable. If it could avoid a broadside duel and instead get in front of or behind Gotheborg and then rake it, that would have been a bad spot for Gotheborg to be in. Also Shtandart was a naval ship while Gotheborg was a merchantman, so that might have factored into the training and discipline of the crews.

    +Lurkens Kanal Again, Gotheborg was a merchant ship, which means her guns would be of very light caliber. A naval frigate could batter her into submission from beyond musket range. If you read about naval history, encounters between warships and merchantmen only ended one way--in the capture of the latter. Large, heavily-armed merchantmen like Gotheborg were captured by ships even smaller than Shtandart. And for obvious reasons: they weren't meant to fight.

    In the Aubrey-Maturin series Jack Aubrey takes on the Spanish Xebec-Frigate Cacafuego (32 guns, yes the name means "fire s***ter) with only his beloved brig Sophie (14 guns) and captures it. This was based upon the battle fought on 6 May 1801, when Admiral, Lord Thomas Cochrane (then a Master and Commander himself) took on the 32 gun Xebec-Frigate El Gamo with his brig HMS Speedy (14 guns). The former was four times larger, and had six times the crew, as the Speedy at the time of the engagement only consisted of 54 crew. Lord Cochrane managed to only lose 3 men killed, and nine wounded, while the Spanish lost 14 killed, 41 wounded, the ship and rest of the crew captured. In the Age of Sail, many times outgunned and outnumbered ships sometimes rose to the top through expert sailing, tactics, and/or the weather.

    Merchantmen in those times would at least carry something in the way of armament. Protection from pirates, privateers, or hostile nations. Whether they had enough guns, powder, and shot, and a trained crew to make a difference varies case to case. Sometimes, it was enough.

    A replica ship should have no problem at all carrying full size real guns. But full size guns are expensive. The Price of a small new car each. Also, larger guns need more powder to really roar, and though powder is not that expensive, it adds up, plus the legal hustle carrying around a decent amount of explosives. The only thing where weight might come in, is with operating the guns: those ships used to have huge crews, esp. war ships. And todays reproductions tend to have a few dozen at most core crew and some trainees. So manpower is limited Bring in a 74 Gun ship with full armament, and you have some 700ish people crammed in to operate sails and guns simultaneously, stocket with literally tons of gunpowder and if they were full time professionals and allowed to drill and exercise guns regularly, too, they‘d be absolutely terrifying to see sailing towards you, gunports open, flashing the bright red inside paint, with dozens upon dozens of red painted Gun muzzles sticking out

    Well, RTO41, the REPLICA of Götheborg had 10 guns. The original one had 30 guns. Considering her size and tonnage, the guns were most likely even bigger than the ones on Shtandart frigate. Shtandart is a lovely ship, though!

    Eselfar On the Swedish wikipedia article about the Götheborg. Perhaps it seems a bit excessive now a days, but at the time I do believe they felt that some protection were necessary since these ships carried valuable cargo.

    No. Chapman was Swedish. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fredrik_Henrik_af_Chapman First naval architect. Today some of the worlds most modern warships and submarines are Swedish made. The ship in the video is currently the worlds largest SAILING wooden ship with everything handmade and authentic to the bone. But it is not a warship it was a trading vessel for the Swedish East India Company hence only six something cannons :). Sweden however at many points throughout history had the worlds largest warships. One must remember that we Swedes haven't always been progressive and for peace. We take our defense very seriously but back when we were constantly at war with either Russia/Poland or Denmark or Germany. And before that Vikings. And everyone knows how much the Vikings loved their boat building and sailing :). The Finnish name for Sweden (Ruotsi), is derived from an Old Norse term for "the men who row" (rods-) as rowing was the main method of navigating the rivers of Eastern Europe, and that it could be linked to the Swedish coastal area of Roslagen. Literally the translation of Swede in several languages is men who row. We like our boats and ships!

    I only see 5 cannons per side at the Götherborgh (10) and it has the shape of being an indiaman, while Shtandart has a total ammount of around 25 guns + being a military frigate (flagship of Peter the Great's navy). So I see Shtandart has the winner.

    Well, according to Wikipedia Gotheborg actually had 30 guns, to Shtandart's 24 (upgraded to 28). Probably they're just not firing them all here because it takes a LOT of crew to operate canons.
