I worked with a man years ago whose middle name was "Robert E. Lee". His first name was Chester. His last name was some Polish name. From what he told me, his father was a Civil War buff. He told me if he had a brother, his father would have had as his middle name "Ulysses S. Grant". Tim - I found it interesting you refer to George Meade as the greatest American general.

Tim - Glenn Tucker writes in 'High Tide at Gettysburg’ that E. P. Alexander stated that an unnamed source told him that Lee was going to attack on the Third with his entire army. Do we know yet who that source was?

Nice video Tim, although its debatable as to whether Meade is the greatest general in American History. 🤣

I know it's unlikely, but we're there any battle babies named after Confederates?

Questions. Since election was in November 1864, how did the Union soldiers get to vote? Did they have go back to home states? Allowed to vote where they were located? Absentee ballots???

Edwin Stanton (the US Secretary of War during the Civil war) created mail in voting during the Civil War, although absentee ballots were also used during the Revolutionary War. So soldiers sometimes voted at home, or they could cast their vote at a field station set up at their camp, or they could mail in a ballot! This greatly helped Lincoln win the election!

I bet if there was one, Tim would have found them. I'd be willing to bet that Robert E Lee wasn't likely to be terribly popular in Gettysburg. 😊

There was a Robert Lee Tipton, son of Solomon Tipton, born in Gettysburg in January 1853. He would have been 10 at the time of the battle. And he has a brother named John Reynolds Tipton, born in 1851. Perhaps they were baptized as older children and given those middle names after the battle, or possibly it is just a coincidence. But I have been asked about them several times. Incidentally, they have a sister, Lorena Meade Tipton born in September 1863.
