Battery-Powered Security Camera vs. Hardwired: Which is Best For YOU? || Reolink Argus 3 vs. Lumus

Ғылым және технология

In this video, I answer the question of whether or not a solar-powered security camera is even any good. In order to compare, I look at both the new Reolink Argus 3 camera and the Reolink Lumus. Both cameras are VERY similar -- but will hardwired or solar-powered win?

    Hey Carson, I appreciate your videos and watching your installation of the PoE systems -- I'm still trying to figure out which direction I want to go in. I appreciate the disclosure that Reolink is providing these products to you, but I feel like when watching your videos on Reolink stuff, it feels like there's maybe not as much critical analysis or discussions of the drawbacks of the products and how different cases and scenarios have different effects on the function (just one example how the solar panel may not be as useful to people in northern climates with long winters with short days). I'm glad you called out the 15 fps recording (let's face it, the footage looks like a choppy mess) but then you followed that up with, "Well, it's not the biggest deal-breaker..." It's not necessary to add that last bit -- just tell us what the spec is and allow the viewer to decide if it's a deal-breaker. After watching this, I thought that the Lumus was the way to go for me, but then the more I did my own research, it seems unclear if it's possible to extend the USB cable before the AC adapter or if I have to run an extension core to power this. A hard limit of 10 feet of cable is definitely a limiting factor. Then I was thinking maybe the battery-powered Argus 3 with the solar panel was the way to go until I saw on the Lifehackster video on the Lumus vs. Argus 3 that the Lumus supports 4 seconds of pre-recording before motion events -- which is a huge selling point. But then there's also the issue with price and how much more the Argus 3 with solar panel is. So you can see how this can get really confusing for us earnestly trying to learn and understand what is the best solution for our needs and budgets. I promise I'm not trying to be a jerk, and I also understand that this is more of a topical video about wired vs. wireless, but I'm feeling disillusioned by how many KZreadrs Reolink seems to give free products to and how Amazon sellers "buy" good reviews by offering extra spiffs and rewards to customers. It's getting more and more difficult to find trustworthy info and ethical reviewers. There are countless videos out there about specs, unboxings, and comparisons, but tell us how and why each one will be useful for different needs and don't be afraid to really lean into the drawbacks -- your viewers will appreciate it and it'll also help Reolink improve their products.

    U r NOT being a "jerk" for having genuine enquiries & concerns. And if youtubers really did lean into the drawbacks of the FREE products they're given, they'd more than likely be concerned their freebies would stop coming to them. So instead they make remarks after certain comments, like "not the biggest deal breaker". It mightn't be "the biggest deal breaker" to the youtuber who's endorsing the products they received for free, but to us consumers who have to PAY, it CAN be a "deal breaker", especially if it's something we require of our security system. I'm concerned & baffled that I can't use these cameras on my 5G internet service. I find that truely bizarre. (Around the 8.30mark). The farthest camera would be aprox 15metres from my router. It's so hard trying to find a security camera. After the endless searching of products, going thru reviews,etc. you either have to break the bank, or make do with a "deal breaker"...I'm still looking. I did think reolink might've been they way to go - but they won't connect to my 5G internet service, so bye bye reolink....Good luck to you mate, I hope you find what you're looking for - I hope we both do!!!

    Great review!!! I keep having issues with Argus 2 cameras and was getting tired of them. I had been curious about Lumus and Argus 3. I often struggle with getting a right camera angles. PIR is not that great compared to Ring (customizable motion zone). But Ring cameras are much more expensive in Canada:-S I don't have an existing floodlight wiring, so my options are kinda limited. Anyways, I was curious about Lumus and Argus 3. Argus 3 is sold out now, so instead I bought Lumus..then I found your video. I didn't know that the spotlight brightness is different between Lumus and Argus 3. I hope Lumus will light up well around my driveway and sidewalk. Sometimes teenagers try to do some stupid things on my car on the road. One day my car door had been left open in the driveway, and someone stole my stuff. neighbors walking right across my property.. never ends lol Thank you for this video!! it is imformative.

    That's something I'm concerned about too. I'm having problems with my drug addicted, violence-inclined neighbours. I'm looking into security options, & I've been thinking if I get cameras the junkies will unplug the cameras/turn the power off at my fuse box/or rip them off the house. I'm going to have to have a few cameras set up so if the junkies or whoever they get to come onto my property, are seen from any angle. I want a camera that will emit an alarm when it detects someone.

    Some general pros and cons of battery powered vs hard-wired and different use cases: battery powered: - Ease of installation, flexibility in location -- anyone can install - becoming more and more affordable over time and offering more and better features than they did (any brand) even a few years ago - simply having one, even despite the drawbacks, still serves as a deterrent to opportunistic thieves and petty criminals - higher cost to purchase and then there's always an upsell on cloud recording - concerns over privacy -- look up Eufy camera breach and Adorcam cloud hack - battery life is almost entirely dependent on use case -- people who live on busy streets or big cities with lots of people walking by, small (non existent) front yards and porches will experience very fast battery draw versus folks in the suburbs or rural areas with big yards and driveways and less pedestrian and vehicle traffic - battery-powered cameras spend most of time on standby -- the few seconds it takes to start recording could mean missing crucial footage - good solution for wide, open areas like yards, big front porches. Not so useful in more confined spaces like narrow pathways where people can pass through before recording starts - solar panel is not going to be as useful to people who live further north where winters last six months and it gets dark at 4:00 in the afternoon wired network camera: - limited by length of installation cable -- could require drilling holes through siding or running an extension cord - much more affordable -- you could buy two or three Lumus cameras for the price of one Argus 3 with solar panel - have the option to run and record 24/7 - at the whim of the wifi network unless SD card is installed - supports a few seconds of pre-recording of video before motion events, helping to provide more (and maybe very important) footage - more useful in cases of living on busy roads or big cities where battery-powered cameras are more frequently triggered by motion events (for example, the "AI" on the front door camera I have is set off every time a public transit bus goes by, which is every 15-20 minutes) NVR: - most difficult for bad guys to "defeat" since they're always recording and the quality of the footage is far superior to battery-operated cameras - also most challenging to install, and depending on the size of the home and skill level, could be costly to have a professional install - camera footage is recorded to a private hard drive, not cloud storage to an AWS data center in Singapore - will run and record footage regardless of Wi-fi outages - drilling large holes into siding could crack siding or create space for moisture and insects to get into the house if not properly sealed and spray foamed after running cables - more future proof as there is no concern about battery cycles weakening over time and the ability to add new cameras to existing NVR - the likelihood of capturing footage or evidence to crimes not directly related to your property -- for instance, I live on a busy street in Chicago and there are frequent hit and runs late at night in the intersection my apartment looks over. I hear them every time they happen, but never have footage. Sadly, in my experience, Chicago police will let perps off the hook unless they have a person who specifically witnessed the crash (or security camera footage), not just heard it through the window of their apartment. One time, a guy in an Astro van totaled my neighbor's car but drove off a half a block until his axle completely failed. He ditched the van and ran into the alley. My neighbor and I were outside and witnessed him running from the van, but the police didn't care that we saw that -- they needed us to see him hitting the car. They got him, but let him go. A couple of weeks ago, a guy on a motorcycle was rear-ended by an SUV and the rider (who was not wearing a helmet) nearly died. His brother came back the next day to pick up his bike and I got to talk to him and hear that the rider was ok (but very banged up). There haven't been any shootings on my block in the six years I've lived here, but it is a common occurrence elsewhere and it's useful for the police and victims to have that footage.

Last week they came to my home to "rip my head off", "knock my heads off", "show me who they are", "f*#k me up", "knock my teeth out",etc. I rang Police 3times absolutely terrified &fearing for my life. Police showed up after 50 minutes. I need security cameras, preferably with alarms when someone is detected. I sleep on the couch(when I do sleep) so I can hear better . I'm too scared to shower, too scared to go to the shops in case they break in, I constantly walk around looking out windows to make sure they're not in my yard or climbing the fence to get in. I have arthritis in my knees, hips & back - I can't defend myself. I live in Aust. I'm looking for ANY & ALL advice & help I can regarding cameras-preferably with alarms-but otherwise reliable if they're not alarmed, or motion detectors with alarms, or any security ideas to ward off these people & alert me before they break in - alert me when they enter my property. I'm a disability pensioner - I don't have much money but I HAVE to have security. I can't keep going on like this. It's destroying me. MOVING IS NOT AN OPTION!!!

    Fps is most important after resolution. This is how you can get thieves. Usually you can see face for really short period. Only people dealing with criminal aspect knows that special software can stitch many frames on a basis of image dots to create better final picture, so as many frames you have for that special moment more chances to get clear picture of the face.

    Depends on if you are concerned on outside hackers hacking into your primary network through IOT devices like these. If you’re moderately to highly concerned, then sure, go for it if you’d like, but it’s not totally necessary as these are relatively locked down as far as I can tell. No promises that that wouldn’t change in the future though. I’ve got a separate SSID on a different VLAN on our network specifically for our security cameras and NVR system, just in case. Hope this helps!

    Hey man, im sorry before, if my comment is irrelevant to this video Im about to buy mavic air 2. I've seen your videos about it, but i have some questions, i hope you have time to answer this, because your answer will affects my decision to buy mavic air 2 (forgive me if my questions kinda long and my grammar is bad) When flying mavic air 2, did we always have to point the antenna to the drone ? Like, it has occusync 2.0 right ? So there should be no problem about the signal, (because occusync is unlike the wifi transmission drone which always depend with the signal between remote and drone, so we should always point it to the drone) right ? Or its not that simple ? Lets just say, if there's 4 scenario : 1.If i flying it while facing backward with my remote against the drone 2.If i flying it outside, but the drone through tall buildings, and i flying the drone around that tall building until the connection between the drone and remote is blocked by those building 3.If i flying my drone when im at forest (full of trees) so the signal between remote and drone will have so much interference by the trees 4.If i am inside my bedroom or my car while my drone is outside, where signal between drone and remote will completely blocked by thick wall or anything With those 4 each screnario, can i still control it until long range (lets just say more than 1 km) can i still do that ? Or if i did that the signal will get interference or lost instantly ? Did you ever did that kind of test ? This my other question is kinda had the same concept. Based on your experiences after flying your mavic air 2 so far, did you ever encounter signal interference ? If yes, is it happen often or rarely ? And at what scenario that makes you get signal interference ? Thanks if you want to take your time to read my comment, id really appreciate that ! 🙏

  • @carsonmtech

    @carsonmtech

    Hey Cenningitis! To generally answer your questions, you should always have the front of the controller pointing towards where your drone is in the sky in an ideal scenario in order to maximize signal. However, doing so is not 100% necessary and you could be standing with your back to the drone and your signal would be fine. I have not experienced any issues thus far yet with interference and my Mavic Air 2. I have noticed that the signal is MUCH better compared to that of the Mavic Mini. Hope this helps!

    Nope! Reolink is 100% free to use. However, if you want to use their Cloud Service, you do have to subscribe for that. However, as long as you've got a microSD card in the camera, you can live access your camera(s) + their recorded cache from anywhere in the world as long as you've got an internet connection. They've got a super great ecosystem going for them and I really appreciate the fact they don't force a subscription down your throat.

    Uhhh, false? I’ve never once had to charge these cameras and I’ve now had a camera up for over 2 years. The solar panels keeps the cameras always charged!
