    Crazy fact Metallica's producer at the time Flemming R. said James overdubbed the main riff 6 times, craziest shit he's ever heard or seen. That's pretty ridiculous, how tight it sounds for being layered 6 times.....a beast at best!

    +Dan 2c plus You need to take into account that he wrote these songs also. So, his internal rhythm or whatever is timed to what he writes. Try it yourself. Write your own riff, and the way you sing over it while playing will be natural. Not taking anything away from him, but I realized this once I got older.

I'm not saying it doesn't work the way they play it, but everyone hears it wrong due to the backing rhythm track. I used to think that's how it was played too until I heard this. But that isn't how James played it in the studio, and hearing the riff by itself right here is proof.

    @@cdgeeezy It doesn't have to be him not making it in one take, he can obviously pull it off as a whole, he composed it. But to have a fantastic take, a great sounding one on the record, makes you want to look for the best sounding parts from different takes and then you cut out the worse sounding and put the better one instead. It's good for the record, because then the solo or whatever it is (a drum part too, a bass part crucial for the sound in particular moment etc.) sounds fabulous instead of like a home practice... ;) I think there's nothing wrong about it. But also - his solos on that record, as I noticed, often have different guitar sound in different parts of the solo. I mean for instance Master Of Puppets solo has like three different guitar sounds in different parts of the solo - some are more and some are less gainy or more or less mid-frequencies, and it's not a different Hammet's take as a guitarist, but rather producer's intention for the guitar sound was different in particular part of the solo, so he had to record it in parts. I mean Rasmussen set his guitar tone on amp etc. or wanted to have more mids here, more gain there, for it to sit better in the mix.

    Did James do that guitar solo thing at the beginning or was that Kirk's guitar?

    if it’s the acoustic part, it was either James or cliff. And as for the distortion harmony part, it was probably just James

    Are those leads in the beginning double tracked? Like, did Kirk record all the 3 harmonies twice?

  • @trincerone
    @trincerone6 жыл бұрын

    Maybe it's written already somewhere, but where on earth are these isolated tracks coming from? Normally, you would have an original 2" 24 mulitrack tape, which then gets mixed and mastered onto 2 track master tape (form which you'd produce the masters for the pressings). Now obviously the 2 track master won't give access to isolated guitar tracks, so you would need to go all the way back to the 24 track tape. That, however, would mean you would need to get access to the original unmastered mulitrack tape, get it into a playing condition (which can include all kind of steps such as baking the tape to harden its base); aftwards you would need to redo the mixing (which means you would need to have access to kind of similar outboard gear and know the required setting to get the sound) and the mastering. Or is there a simpler way that I am overlooking?

  • @KonStafylides

    @KonStafylides

    Yeah its way simpler than that. Its just the guitar track from Guitar Hero. Thats why songs like Leper Messiah dont have isolated tracks on yt, they arent in Guitar Hero

    I wonder if the multitrack was archived to digital at some point before this as a matter of preservation. Then for GH they pulled from that source, mixing as needed to the four channels they seem to use. Guitar, bass, drums, vocals.

    not AAALL. because riffs like interlude of creeping death or a riff from trapped under ice, Kirk wrote them. and probably he also wrote some riffs in MOP. i'm not saying what that riff has been wrote by Hammett but saying that James not played ALL the riffs at all...

    There was a time where i used to always alternate pick almost everything even if downpicking or some other way sounded better, just so i could get more used to it, then just for the sake of curiosity i played Drive Fast Take Chances by Acid King but downpicked and realized how much better it sounded, and that's all it took for me to start defaulting to mostly downstrokes again without even noticing it
