As usual Pradeep shows an ola fire on his thumbnail, despite Okinawa having 4 fires, boom motors with 1, pure ev with 4 and jethendra with 20. I suppose Ola gets subscribers. This guy totally dismissed cell quality by saying it's not the cell, despite the USA road transportation safety board investigating LG chemicals for a large number of fire related recalls in Tesla, GM, VW, Hyundai, Mercedes and Ford. LG is a tier1 supplier. There is a lack of understanding here. Pradeep clearly called out that when a cell goes into thermal runaway it cannot be stopped and heats the next cell until it fails. This guy said, it causes the next cell to short so they disconnect it. This is nonsense, first off, the cells are wire bonded with welds so they cannot be isolated, and secondly the heat will cause the next cell to burn up despite the cell being disconnected. That's why it's called thermal runnaway and not short circuit runaway. Finally any safety engineer will tell you that semiconductors and bms are not safety elements. A fuse will open a circuit when it fails. A semiconductor fails short circuit so it cannot protect anything. There was no mention of overcharging which is another major cause of failure, and recently in India most fatalities and a large number of fires occur on chargers not in the heat of summer. They did not show any battery pack testing, no large shock and vibration machines for the pack, no robot wire bonders with optical inspection computers, nothing but a design test. Quality control is more important than these simple tests as it catches failures in assembly. Sorry, this gives me no faith. At least ola puts each cell into its own aluminium pocket inside the cast aluminium pack so it's physically isolated and they use wire bond robots with AOI. These guys will have a fire too as a bad cell from a tier 1 supplier will get installed eventually

The maximum continuous discharge rate claimed by cell manufacturers is based on a cell in free air and starting from 20 or 25 degrees C and ending up at about 80deg. C. (80deg does not bring a risk of immediate disaster but the life of the cells will be greatly shortened if they reach this temperature often.) This rated current is not realistic where the cell is in a large battery pack and it is in a scooter that has been standing in direct sunlight for several hours in many parts of India. The temperature could be starting from 65deg or more, and the maximum current you can take without the battery going over 80deg is much lower. You need cells with a much higher rated discharge current than you will actually use, so as to reduce the rise in temperature. There is a temptation not to use cells with a higher rated current because they do not store as much energy for a given price and weight.

Use the black body radiation temperature based temp seting in your thermal camera. Set emmisivitty to 0.95. . Ambient temperature is not the problem . The problem is how much heat can battery outer body dissipate. Just use transformer oil to cool battery. Bypass diode will bypass the faulty battery!

People are aware about Ola. They don't know about other manufacturers. It is done for click bait. A common way to get views on KZread. And Ola should be called out for catching fire. A premium scooter catching fire is really very bad. Ola is just not well engineered. Maybe over time they will sort out issues but customers are paying the price.

To save the environment people are asked to use EV but they are causing injuries / deaths and even claim of manufacturers about how many kms can be covered in one charge are also being found false and those who booked EV are cancelling or planning to cancel the bookings done for two and four wheelers .The vehicles should be tested extensively in all weathers for checking the quality of battery as well on how many kms the vehicle can do in one charge. Because of incidences people are afraid to charge the battery fully also .In case the EV are so risky the manufacturers should use best quality batteries and material in making of vehicles and complaints made by customers about bad performance of anything in the vehicle should be taken seriously and should be attended on priority Those driving in cities may still get some help in case of any emergency but if the vehicles are used in small towns or on highway while going from one place to another then there is no immediate help available to those whose EV breaks down for discharge of battery or for other reason .Gov l should also be strict with manufacturers as not only hard earned money of people is involved but something bought for convenience turns into inconvenience and risk to life which should be tried to be prevented .

I agree an whats even worse i read in one of the articles that people who have had fires and their vehicles recalled will not be given a new battery, they will only check the wiring and see if there are any loose connections as removing and testing the bqattery is deemed as "too expensive" for the manufacturer. Ev's are still not practical and have along way to go.
