    The idea for a vigilante having a large ring that left an imprint on the victims he punched was a feature of a pulp novel hero called The Spider. He had a signet ring that left a spider imprint. It’s interesting Aronofsky says he wanted Joaquin Phoniex as Batman/Bruce Wayne now, when you look back at contenders for the character and he was zeroing in on Christian Bale, who did expressed interest at the time before the film was shelved. It’s interesting how both Bale and Phoenix would later portray characters in the Batman universe. Bale would be Batman/Bruce Wayne in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy and Phoenix would play Joker/Arthur Fleck in Joker. Both actors played the parts phenomenally.

    I read the script like 3 years ago. I was reading this as a comic and movie fan able to distinguish what makes each subjectively good because that stuff doesn't exactly translate into each other. I was reading the script and parts had me like "comic fans would hate this part", "batman fans would hate this aspect of this", but I finished the whole script and by the end I was like "wow, this is good and I actually like this. I would totally watch this." I think massive fan bases are overly protective about what they feel a character should be. I am one of the only people I know that finds the nolan trilogy good films, but not good batman films... if that makes any sense. Like that batman isnt close at all to comic batman, the joker and scarecrow, and ra's, bane, all so radically different but on a screen it totally works. I feel conflicted over the overly strong opinions on nolan's batman being the "best". Again I know its ultimately subjective and peoples opinions vary. Comic fans praise that trilogy so hard regardless of it hypothetically not being something that they thought they originally wanted, yet kind of shit on people who try to give them something more comic accurate. It truly baffles me.

    This is not something I'd want to watch, but I agree with you about Nolan, basically. I don't exactly love the movies, the fight scenes and the score are all underwhelming, for one thing, and I don't really feel like it has the right sort of pacing for a superhero film, but they are way better when I don't think of them as Batman movies. Sort of like Blade. I was a huge fan of the comic-book version of Blade, the non-powered, original version and so the movies just piss me off. But if they were called something else, I might like them. It's not that they are bad, they just take the concept and change it radically.

    I had this idea that was inspired by darren aronofsky batman script ( by the way I think the script was pretty badass imo) but I changed it up a bit. Make bruce wayne rich, make him live in a expensive type of apartment, and the way he becomes batman is that he sees the crime, corruption and city, he slowly builds rage and insanity and finally snaps. He puts on a homemade costume and starts to fight crime. And the villian should be the penguin, it could fit the dark tone and he could basically be a mob boss.

  • @davidfeltheim2501
    @davidfeltheim25012 жыл бұрын

    This script was way ahead of its time, with Joker and The Batman being the expression of that realer, edgier, character driven story. Nolan's trilogy and Snyder's films are great but it took quite a few interpretations of Batman to finally realize the more violent and raw aspect of him.

At his best hes supposed to be fighting killer croc and mister freeze and super comic booky characters. Which is why I think the batman Arkham is the best depiction of him, but I'm just saying... the nolan batman already was a bastardization of the mythos, they might as well have go full on art film on that shit

    So I looked up what exactly this Batman Year one movie would've done, and i found something interesting: the initial script was written by Frank Miller and Aronofsky. What's interesting is that according to an interview, Aronofsky said that the movie WAS NOT gonna be a traditional batman film. His literal quote was "throw out everything you know about batman. We're starting fresh". He wanted to include all the powerful themes of the original comic while making changes with Miller to create something new. And when I found out what those changes were, man were they weird. I copy pasted it so everyone can see: -After Bruce Wayne's parents are shot, Bruce loses his fortune and becomes homeless. Alfred's character changed to a African-American man named "Little"Al who runs a Auto-Repair shop and acts as Bruce's mentor. Bruce doesn't travel the world, he instead reads books on various types of combat and practices them. Unlike the comic it would have focused more on Bruce. Bruce uses mostly chemical based weapons when fighting (like the original Bill Finger Batman). Bruce Wayne gets his persona from an intertwined T and W on a ring he wore while fighting crime that was mistaken for a bat. Many key scenes from the comic are omitted from the script. The Batmobile and Batcave are present. The Batmobile was a modified car in "Little-Al"'s garage. The Batcave is located in a abandoned subway station. Gordon has lived in Gotham for years, and is trying to leave for the sake of his pregnant wife. Gordon's wife is renamed Ann. Carmine Falcone is omitted from the script and Gillain B.Loeb would have replaced him as the Master of the Organized crime. Selina Kyle would have been African-American and would have had a more prominent role. Gordon's character would have been suicidal. The Batmobile would have been a Lincoln Continental. There would have been many new characters that were not in the comic. The batcave was gonna be an abandoned subway station in Gotham. That's everything I found. Just saying, while this script is clearly very different like what the batman mythos is supposed to be, it doesn't sound awful. With the right direction it could've turned out good. Good thing that the Matt Reeves film is taking some influence from this scrapped film (the African American Catwoman with a prominent role, young Bruce in Year one of his career and having a large focus on him, the crime noir visual style, etc.)

    I’m pretty sure some elements of this script will be in The Batman (2022) with the way they are doing the batmobile and it’s tone (similar to Taxi Driver and French Connection). Either way I hope they make this project at some point, it would make for an interesting “sequel” to Joker. I’m also looking forward to the new movie by Matt Reeves!!!

    Despite many of the cosmetic changes to his seminal miniseries, Frank Miller and Darren Aronofsky's rejected film adaptation of the immortal "Batman: Year One" would've been frigging incredible! I would've enjoyed the absolute hell out of a (possibly) R-rated Batman flick inspired by the dark, gritty crime thrillers of the 1970s such as "Death Wish," "Serpico," "The French Connection," "Taxi Driver," "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three," and "Dirty Harry"! And Eastwood would've been perfect as the World's Greatest Detective back in the seventies and early eighties!

    Fascinating, first time I heard an in-depth analysis of this project getting scrapped. I remember years ago when they announced it, and was waiting for updates all the time, was disappointed when found out they weren't going ahead with it. I would have liked to have seen Aranofsky's version of Batman, and Burton's version of Superman with Nicolas Cage that got scrapped in the late 90s. Just to see their vision of these characters and the worlds they inhabit would have been intriguing.

    Hearing this made me curious to want to read the script, for I never heard about this until recently since I was alittle too young back in the early 2000s. This is something that fits my type of Batman, the Dark Knight Returns & Year One type. I would love to see a darker take on one of my all time favorite superheroes. I think with the Joker's success, we could potentially see something like this in the future, whatever it's a cinematic film or even an animated movie. As of now, if something like this was to be brought to the light of day, I think they would fit it under their DC Black label since the movie would fit under that label. Anyway, great video and as a newcomer to the channel, I'll be looking forward to your future videos.

    With the new DC Black Labels, I think we could actually get these projects back as their own standalone movies. Only one I don't see as fitting for a revival is superman flyby, cause if you look up the script for it it's basically Man Of Steel, with Zod replaced by made-up characters (Kata-Zor and Ty-Zor). Seriously look up the script it's pretty much the same story. The others though I can see. Only thing is that there's a chance that The Batman (2022) might take a lot of elements from this Aronofsky batman movie. Even some of the stuff described in the video with the style seems similar. Other then that though, I'd love to see the others. George Miller's Justice League would he awesome to see (but I wouldn't mind if it gets reworked into a DCEU movie, it's possible), as well as Superman Lives. Having Nicolas Cage finally as Superman in live-actione would he amazing.
