Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - The Humor Experiment

Фильм және анимация

Peter Howell (of the Toronto Star) claimed in his review of "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" that there was only one joke in the film. Rebecca Johnson conducted an experiment to see if this was falsifiable.
Please Note: This is an incomplete list of the humorous moments from "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice". Rebecca used these particular clips because she was aiming for the moments that she thought would make most people laugh and for the sake of brevity on her original live stream. There's plenty more comedic bits in the film!

I'd say a lot of Perry, Alfred and Lex's dialogue was humor.

This movie has some great physical comedy (toy car, Clark's show of force after Bruce says "I UNDERSTAND ", The "In that moment, Bruce Wayne knew.....he fucked up"....which happened twice, once with Clark and once with Doomsday), Witty come backs, ironic jabs and straight up sarcasm (Alfred, Swanwick, Lois, Lex and Bruce all get 1....at least). Or straight up jokes "I don't know how to lose" "You'll learn" This film is funny as hell, and it NEVER feels forced

I think, especially at the time, critics (and I guess some audiences?) had a hard expectation that superhero movies should not take themselves seriously , and therefore thought the humor should have been the very silly, self-aware, poke fun at itself kind of jokey jokeyness that plagues a lot of modern blockbusters. And to be fair, that can work in some movies, but the arguments that BvS was “joyless” and “humorless” really fall flat when you look at it. “It’s called a bullet. You shoot people with it.” -Perry I love this movie.

Something Gavin O'Connor said in an interview published today regarding his experience with Suicide Squad 2 relates to this subject, emphasis mine: "“What happened was during the latter part of writing the script there was a whole regime change at DC, and when that happened, they wanted it to be a comedy. And I’m like, ‘I’m not writing a comedy.‘ I MEAN, IT [WAS] FUN, but it’s not a yuk-fest." Basically, the critics seem to have convinced the WB and certain parts of the audience that anything that's not outright comedy, even if it's fun, is not fun enough.

Wow! While not surprising, it's still a little bit mind-blowing. You can have serious or dramatic films that still have comedic bits in them without turning them into straight comedies. I don't know why that's so difficult to understand by the studio.

I love your videos and hope to see these deep dives in other DC films or\and Snyder films. I do agree the critic was wrong about there being only one joke, but the examples you shows to me aren't really jokes per se (the Perry White stuff I mean) or even that humorous. I do think there's several areas that are humorous thoug like when Superman says to Lex he lost and Lex says "I don't know how to lose" and Superman responds he'll learn. Another scene I thought was humorous was whenever Alfred would make jabs at Bruce. The Luthor party scenes you mentioned were great examples too. I remember in the theater telling my wife why Diana looks annoyed at Lex for his Zeus story. The scene where Wonder Woman smiles as she fights Doomsday felt like a moment of humor too. Yes the scene with Lois and the terrorists as well as Batman and Superman asking about Diana and the Martha rescue were all humor moments. I was surprised by how short the video was in comparison to your others you usually go deeper into the analysis but still great video. What you think of ZSJL? Please tell me you got the Trilogy set

Hi, Eric! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. This video is a segment of a larger live stream I did about one of the reviews from the Rotten Tomatoes Top Critics. It's part of a larger conversation and a longer video. I agree that there are lots more examples of humor within BvS, but so as to protect myself from any copyright claims on KZread, I only used examples that were short and I could play quickly over the live stream. Maybe one day, I'll attempt a complete humor montage, but for now, these were the examples I thought I could get away with in terms of commenting on.
