Batman Returns - Caravan of Garbage
Ойын-сауық
Due to the overwhelming success of Batman 1989 Warner Brothers and DC moved hell and high water to lure back Tim Burton and Michael Keaton for it's 1992 sequel, Batman Returns. With the death of The Joker new villains were introduced including Danny DeVito's Penguin, Michelle Pfeiffer Catwoman, Christopher Walkens Max Shreck and the Red Triangle Gang. And boy is it very Tim Burton for better or worse. Thanks for listening to our Caravan Of Garbage review!

I actually love Michael Keaton just sitting in the room doing nothing until the “Bat-Light” shines over him. It says a lot about Bruce Wayne that he literally just has no interest in doing anything other than wait to be Batman again

I might be wrong but I feel like in the 2003 cartoon, when Joker spends an episode being the Batman, he gives off a satirized version of that scene where he's still Joker but he's dressed as Michael Keaton and just takes his glasses off and is like 'this is a job for the Bat-Man!' Interestingly, if Burton’s third Batman film had taken off, he intended to prominently feature the Scarecrow as the villain. Mr. Freeze would’ve appeared as well, and the final battle against Keaton’s Batman and Marlon Wayons Robin would be on Scarecrow’s frozen farm, hence the project’s studio assigned title: Blue Harvest
The actor who played Shrek’s son did one of the best Christopher Walken impressions I’ve seen on film.

I like the fact that Keaton was just sitting in the darkness, brooding, in his reintroduction. It shows us that he has no life outside of being Batman, its like he's hibernating when he's not in the suit, and he literally comes to life when the Batsignal lights up the room.
DeVito was absolutely stellar in this, as was Christopher Walken and Michelle Pfieffer. While not super accurate in terms of character, this feels like the most comic-booky Batman movie. It’s campy but also dark and brooding. And this is by far the best depiction of Gotham ever put to film

Something I've always found interesting: Selina Kyle at one point says "It's gonna be a hot time in the old town tonight" to Bruce. Which is just weirdly specifically the same line that the Joker said when he was killing the mob boss with his joybuzzer in the first Tim Burton movie. Always wondered if it was a weird coincidence or a deliberate callback.
Somehow as a 5 year old kid, my mom took me to the theaters to see this. I think it was the greatest movie ever, and to this day, it will always hold a special place in my heart. It was probably one of my first true cinematic experiences that wasn't a Disney film, and always seems larger than life anytime I put it on. As an adult, I really feel like the main story is around Selina Kyle essentially spiraling towards madness after essentially being bullied, and outright assaulted [*aka attempted murder] by her boss, and he desire for vengeance and to get even, no matter the cost. After watching it, I almost always feel sorry for Selina by the end, can empathize with the Penguin [for being abandoned by his parents], and have immense contempt for Max. Yeah, yeah... Bruce Wayne just sort of 'exists' in this film, but I forgive them for telling a different overall story.
Michelle Pfeifer coming back to her apartment and wrecking the shiet out of it during her 15-minute-long brain-damaged meltdown is probably one of my favourite scenes ever put to film. Her acting is just so on point, she seems completely out of it and her body language is mesmerizing.

As a kid, seeing Selina Kyle open her eyes when all the cats go over her was one of the most terrifying things I'd seen as a 9 year old.
The scene in this that stuck with me as a young 'un was Selina Kyle trashing her apartment in a fit of rage. I think I'd probably never seen that (an adult character throwing a childish temper tantrum and just breaking all their stuff) before in a movie and it felt weirdly transgressive (more than her dressing up in vacuum-sealed vinyl and whipping Batman on the bottom, the significance of that passed me by at the time).

Returns is absolutely fantastic. Better than 89, better than all the rest imo. I love the dialectic between Bruce and the villains - Catwoman represents Batman, Max Schreck represents Bruce the billionaire, and Penguin represents Bruce the orphan.
Still love this movie. As a kid I never realized how little screen time Batman/Bruce Wayne actually got, but he really puts in a full performance and the chemistry with Pfeiffer's Catwoman is amazing. Never realized the reason the Super Powers Penguin toy was recycled here was because of nervousness like the McDonalds thing, but that makes total sense.

It's actually amazing that they got Danny DeVito in the film at all! I was 7 when this movie came out and before it did, my favorite movies were Ghostbusters, Ninja Turtles, Tremors, Batman, Beetlejuice, and Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. And I had no idea who Tim Burton was. So I had no idea he directed 3 of my favorite movies or even had a concept of what a director actually was. I got to see this in the theaters and I was hyped from the McDonald’s marketing and the marketing around the movie. And when I saw it, I was blown away because it was full of the freaky stuff I loved in Beetlejuice and Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. And again, I had no idea who Tim Burton was because I was 7. So I only saw the connections on a subconscious level. I loved this movie so much as a kid. I still remember seeing Penguin bite that guy’s nose. This movie is probably the most vivid memory I have of going to a movie theater in my entire life. That Christmas was just full of Batman Returns toys. My parents even got me the Batmobile that had the breakaway sides to turn it into that missile mode. It was such a cool toy to have as a kid.
Glad to see Chip Shrek getting at least some mention. His “Dad, go, save yourself” is among my favorite line readings in all of cinema. And I see the thumbnails, but, really? Three “Dungeons & Dragons” movies?

I really loved this movie as a kid. Sure it may not have the best script or be the most accurate to the comics movie, but the cast, music, style, design, villains, action and some of the film's memorable moments really make it a blast to watch. Even at the age of 7 I wasn't really that bothered by the tone either.
I hate myself for laughing at “no catwoman don’t whip me on the bottom” 🤣
It's still strange to me that Burton picked two of the few Batman villains that aren't twisted freaks in the comics, basically everyone else is but Catwoman is just a burglar and Penguin is a short fat guy in a tux lol. I don't really like the weird stuff in this, to each their own I guess, but the best part in this movie for me is when Penguin and Batman are facing off, and Catwoman just backhand springs in-between them. They just kinda stare at her in disbelief, then she just says dryly, "Meow." EXPLOSION!! Good stuff.

Fire breather guy could have stop-drop-rolled in the snow and be fine, lol. I mean... we don't SEE them die. ;)
17:07 Well that's not quite true. Because in the script that he was cast in, he never wore the suit, he was written to be a car mechanic helping Batman's Batmobile to locate where Penguin's device is. He was referred to as "The Kid" who loved reading Batman comics and idolized him, and wore coveralls with the letter R on the side. During the finale before Batman fights Penguin, he would show up again and hand him the device he found earlier and re-tweaked it to the denominator button to launch the missiles. Batman thanks him, asking his name and after he says "Call me Robin" he vanishes after Batman turns away, making him smile. He was taken out since he had no purpose in the story and was overcrowded. But in terms of wearing the Robin suit is pure buzzfeed article BS.

I love the evolution of the trivia section to always being "Green Trivia... plus that montage of the guy yelling RODNEY!"
Not only my favorite Batman movie, it's the best Batman movie.
Still my favourite Batman film. I like how weird it is. And it didn't even seem that weird at the time, only today compared to how bland and boring most superhero films are now

yeah that was my biggest issue with the Nolan films, too grounded in reality for me, Gotham City exists in a comic book world where almost anything can happen
14:01 The Penguin: "So anyway, I started blasting, nyeh nyeh nyeh."
5:35 Noo definitelyyy had a guy come in 😂 but I do love the kills in this, I remember being a kid and thinking, he’s NOT holding back like a “superhero” would 😂
Is this the origin of Big Ears Batman?
This is still my favorite Batman movie, Tim Burton’s aesthetic just fits so well with Gotham
3:53 It is very funny you say that, because in the 2021 anthology comic 'Gotham City Villains' there was an AU story in which the Penguin and Catwoman are a couple. And that story was written by Danny Devito.
"Batman doesn't even appear in his costume for the first 15 minutes of the movie." Wait until they hear about The Dark Knight Rises.
Thank you for keeping Rodney, it’s truly the highlight of my week
It’s my favourite Christmas film
One of the greatest cold-ass lines ever in movies, by the great Christopher Walken. "Bottom line, If she thinks she can blackmail Maxwell Shreck, next time, I drop her out a higher window. Meanwhile I've got bigger fish to fry." He exits left.😭✊🏾
Okay the Wind Waker cutaway when yall are talking about the batarangs got me. 🤣💀
Still my favourite live action Batman film.
I got whipped on the butt! I'm big ears Batman!
I love that the people of Gotham see this fucked up penguin man from the sewers and go “We should make that guy the mayor!”
I absolutely love this movie it's so ridiculous and enjoyable from start to finish.
I love the Burton Batman films. I did as a kid (definitely watched both of these under 10 y/o) and still do. Now I like to think there wasn't another Batman film until 2005.
"The Guy Who Shouts Rodney" segment makes my day every time! Love your content guys!
