Batman Returns (1992) - Movie Review
Ойын-сауық
Merry Christmas! Scream Stream decided to do a secret santa activity where we anonymously chose reviews for each other and Bryan Lomax chose Batman Returns for me. Batman Returns was the second and final Tim Burton adventure in Gotham City. With infinitely more creative control this go-round, Batman Returns is alot darker, weirder, and full on Tim Burton. Does this beloved sequel still hold up?

Let me go ahead and get this out of the way before I get 200 more comments that cant wait to correct me. IM FULLY FUCKING AWARE THE FIRST BATMAN CAME OUT IN 1989. I say the 1989 Batman at least twice in the review. In the opening when I'm discussing being born when the first Batman movie was released and a huge deal...I was born just over a week after 1989. Please try talking about a film for over a half hour and make absolutely zero verbal slips and then you can waste my time with your "um actually..." comments. For everyone else that doesnt use KZread as an avenue to correct complete strangers over the most trivial inconsequential details...thank you!

Juno2000 I actually prefer Batman Returns to the first movie. The Tim Burton movies have their faults and Cody is right in a lot of ways. He has made a few great movies but overall he is more style over substance. I enjoy Burton’s Batman movies but they don’t stand the test of time. I remember the critics reaction to his Batman movies at the time. They were seen as being dark. Yet now we can see the campiness to them. They were dark compared to the 60’s tv series.

Na it doesn’t “rulez” it’s OK. Much prefer the real classic from these 4 movies form 1989!
I found the relationship between Bruce and Selina to be nearly perfect. They are both troubled individuals who've dealt with death and extreme loss, as well as their alternate personas, plus they are attracted to each other as well. After all of their violent encounters, followed by the reveal at the ball, I think everything works very well when it comes to the emotion of their relationship and believability. In many ways, they are the same, and are each other's soul mate.

To me, Batman does have a character arc. he sees his reflection in Selina. In the first Batman film he doesn't kill anyone until he finds out Joker killed his parents. Then he let's the blood flow. Even after he gets his revenge, he still let's the blood flow in returns. It's not until he sees selina about to kill max that he realizes the error in his murderous ways and trys to dissuade her from going down that path. The arc even extends into forever with him trying to keep robin from seeking revenge

Nothing extends into Batman Forever besides actors Michael Gough and Pat Hingle. Joel Schumacher explained in 1995, "Tim's films were his version of Batman comic books. This is ours. When Val came on board, that further made it a new franchise because we had a different Batman." www.newspapers.com/image/495757189/ Tim Burton was producer in name only on Cabin Boy and Batman Forever.

Agreed, Batman/Wayne realize that Selina and Bruce are not so different and I think he would have even given up being Batman for her love. That is a powerful arc that we don't get to see until The Dark Knight Rises. But in that movie he and Selina do fall and love and have a happy ending instead of the more downbeat one in Batman Returns.

He never even finds out get true motivations. He's just fumbling around in the dark. Batman killing is the worst sin of all these directors, they don't get the character at all. You kill, makes you no different than the criminals you take down.
In my opinion Michael Keaton is the best live action Batman/Bruce Wayne.

Patrick Batemen clearly kept right on killing people as Batman. Remember that ninja temple he burned down? Think about how man caged prisoners the league kept in there. Then there was the blatant murder of the Joker's garbage truck driver in the second one. And Two-Face.

Jean Baptiste But Kevin Conroy's Batman, which is the definitive version, does not kill. Christian Bale does not have that good Bat voice but he is the best of not killing. Kevin Conroy did the best at not killing.
Aside from the Christopher Nolan Batman movies, this is my favorite Batman movie. I like the darker tone. But I’m a Tim Burton fan, so I dig the gothic feel of this one. I liked it way better than the 1989 version. The first Batman was a little too campy.
I loved Michelle Pfeiffer in it, she was the best thing it.

...... Good dissertation! Batman Returns was such a dark, cutting edge movie for the time, and would probably be embraced by today's audience. Danny DeVito is quite good as this Shakespearean, Richard the III- like Penguin. And yes, Danny Elfman's score is really cool.

Hands down my favorite Batman movie ever made. Idc how good The Dark Knight is and idc what Batman movie they ever make in the future, nothing will ever beat Returns for me. Pfeiffer will always be my Catwoman.
I was 8 years old when this movie came out and I was obsessed with it. Despite its flaws, it's still my favorite Batman movie.
Matt Reeves in 2038: "Okay, now I'm ready to turn in my first draft."
I loved the 1989 joker
Batman has always been a secondary character to his villains. In comics and in cartoons, batman was always a supporting character to his villain plots; he is always in the shadows, letting the villains shine, and that's what makes them so interesting.
I don't think Celina really died when she was pushed by Shriek.
@CyborgHorse

Yeah, they wouldn't have had her fall through a series of awnings otherwise. She never dies in the movie. Odd that people leap to that conclusion, considering in her original origin she was a stewardess that survived a plane crash. A secretary ain't that different. People take a character's rantings as solemn truth, like when Nolan's characters are waxing poetic about never taking a life, yet we the audience witness blatant disregard for taking the lives of criminals and even innocents. I guess it's meant to make Bale seem more crazy? Selina never suffers a mortal wound in this movie. Taking a short fall into a greenhouse? Look at the gun shots on her costume carefully. It's a shoulder wound and maybe a grazing on her thigh, while others apparently missed completely. If there is something supernatural at play, it's LUCK, not magical zombie regeneration.
As someone who was a kid throughout the Tim burton movies, the marketing for the movie was amazing. I caught up in all of it. The toys, games, t shirts etc etc. Batman returns was everywhere. I was so excited for this movie. When it released, my parents took me and my bro to the theater. We get to the ticket booth, and my father says “let me get four for sister act”. I was so mad! Lol when sister act finished, a family friend was at the theater and saw how mad me and my bro were. She offered to take us to see Batman returns. What a life saver. Thought the movie was awesome! Lol I’ll never forget that story.
Happy Christmas Cody. Thanks for a great year of reviews. Watching this from a tiny sleepy village in the heart of the Suffolk countryside in England.
When I was a little kid and saw the movie poster, I though the penguin was actually a witch
Batman Returns was the last good Batman movie
This is my favorite Batman film. Between Keaton's quiet panicked confusion to Pfeiffer's subtle psychotic break, it has the greatest character reveals in all comic book movie history.
I feel like in every Batman movie the villains have more of a spotlight then Batman

This film being so out there is why i love this film, maybe the most unique of all batman movies.
“Penguin killing innocent children... isn’t that a little...? POW 💥 NO! IT’S A LOT!” Ahh. One of my all time favorites. Great review👍🏾
I think you missed your calling as a stand up comedian Cody! This review is SO hilarious. I was laughing the whole back half of your review as you described all the things that go down in this crazy sequel. Funny stuff. Appreciate the laughs.
Loving the jumper dude, merry Christmas to you & your family. ❤️❤️
Merry Christmas Cody! Great review and I hope you review Batman 1989 soon. I think you’ll definitely love it.
It's a Fun Ride! I've seen both Tim Burton "Batman" films in the theaters when they were released. Note: if it was not mentioned yet by any comments prior: Christopher Walken's character of Max Schreck, unrelated to any Batman Comics, was taken from an old silent film actor, from Germany. Max Schreck, who played the "rat-like" looking vampire in F.W. Murnau's silent masterpiece, "Nosferatu" (1922).
I admire Returns more than I like it. It reminds me of Temple of Doom where it's a completely different beast than its predecessor. I still think Michelle Pfeiffer gives the best performance of any actress in a Batman film, and I do think Devitto's performance is underrated as well. Overall I'm not sure that it works for me as a whole, but I like a lot about it. I do love the 89 film though, and Keaton's my personal favorite Batman.
Love your channel dude you have the best reviews out there. Merry Christmas!!
This is my favorite Batman film.
Batman is my all time favorite hero my first introduction to the iconic dark knight was the (1990's)the Batman animated series such a unique experience loved it
Another great review! About a decade or so, I saw it one time only. My thoughts on the Batman Returns are limited to I made good memories with my cousin who is deceased who is my equal, enjoyed Keaton as Batman since the first movie 89 and other movies, soundtrack is hazy with me and Penguin did a good job of being creepy. It appears I should watch this movie as an adult to see if I enjoy as an adult. Happy Holidays/ Merry Christmas to Cody Leach and everyone else.
This will always be my favorite batman film. It was the first batman film I saw as a child and I still love it.
Keaton will always be my favorite Batman. Hell, I named my youngest son Keaton. To me, Keaton is the most believable Batman. He looks like he would dress up as a Bat. And those eyes!!! I want to see a film adaptation of the Dark Knight Returns with Keaton.

Easily the best Batman ever
Hahahahahaha, love the "bat symbol" in the background. Opening music kicks ass too. There's only one way to approach this movie and that is to view it as a fairy tale or a fable. That's how I approach it and that's why I freakin love it. I think the Penguin is a great villain because, even though he attempts to do some of the most heinous stuff, he's still somewhat sympathetic. Dude was tossed away like a piece of trash. And there is a sense there that he might not have followed through with his plan had the people of Gotham continued to love him. Either way, his hatred come from a place that gives him a certain amount of justification. I love Pfeiffer's Catwoman. She's got a great character arc and I think Shreck makes the perfect foil for her. The production design is frickin beautiful. I can watch this movie just for that element alone!
@CodyLeachYT

Haha I added that symbol as a last minute touch. Yeah it's a very unique and interesting movie for sure. I always find myself starved for Batman focus in these movies that give all the attention to the villains. I know Batman has the greatest villains in comic books but I like a balance.
Great review Cody! It's great to hear some honesty about this movie for a change. Have you thought about reviewing all the other Batman films and doing a ranking afterwards? I'd love to hear your thoughts on them (especially Batman and Robin lol). Merry Christmas!

I love Tim Burton's Batman Returns: Plot issues and all.
Batman Returns is flat out awesome. It is a really hard film to quantify but I still like it and all the characters are just a blast to watch. There is a story by the way. Penguin wants to be accepted but at the same time has a killer plan b that gets back at Gotham's Elite society, Max Shrek wants a power plant to control Gotham, Selina Kyle wants a better life but struggles with right and wrong but wants revenge on her boss for trying to kill her after she discovers his secret plan. And all this relates to Bruce Wayne and Batman and his own struggles for purpose in life. Nobody really get what the want and it all ends in tragedy. It is all very poetic and sad.
Okay, if you had to do a Batman character ranking live action portrayals video, which villain that has appeared in movies and tv shows would you do a ranking portrayal video for? Personally, I’m curious what your thoughts are on the Gotham tv show cause it’s one of my favorite tv shows right now, at least for me and I’m curious how you rank live action portrayals of the Penguin?

Great video, Cody. I really love Tim Burtons Batman films. They're very unique...gothic horror comedies almost. Id like to see Matt Reeves combine Burtons and Nolans elements.
great job cody. danny devito has done sunny in philly since this and well you can say it tops this by miles in character. and this is my favorite batman after the dark knight trilogy

Awesome review! When's the Dark Knight trilogy reviews?
18:54 Apparently, the plan had been for Shreck to be revealed as Penguin's brother, but it was cut for time. That could've added some intrigue and stakes to the second and third act albeit it wouldn't have helped the pacing and storytelling.
Love Batman."Always be yourself.Unless you can be Batman. Then ALWAYS be Batman".
This movie just made me wish Burton did two more
Max Shrek for President 2020
My thinking is yours in reverse..I'll take Tim Burton's Batman's over BM Forever and BM and Robin anytime. Besides Jack Nicholson as the Joker, I thought Batman Returns was an improvement over the original. I think Michael Keaton should come back in a Batman Beyond adaptation with him as an older Bruce Wayne and training a new apprentice (Terry McGinnis)
I really enjoyed your review of Batman Returns Mr Leach. I happen to be a very big fan of Tim Burton Batman Universe and the Batman Universe over all. Batman Returns happens to be my favorite of the batman franchise I liked it for the reason you didn't for it's wild twisted and nightmarish feel of it. It reminds me of a Batman graphic novel or a Batman Elseworld story but that's my opinion oh and by the way I think you're kinda wrong about Selena Kyle she didn't really die when she was pushed out the window. The Batman Returns comicbook and novelization explains that she falls through three awnings and landed on a deep snow drift so she was only unconscious not dead so technically she wasn't a zombie lol their's also a comic book reference that Tim Burton was going for in the whole catwoman story line. But great review Mr Leach keep them coming.
I was 18 and saw this with a high school friend around 2 in the afternoon....I fell asleep about 30 minutes into this movie. Rented it once when it came out in case I missed anything. I didn't. Haven't seen it since.
I was 4 years old when I saw this in theaters. Loved it!
I love the Burton Batman movies. Batman Returns is my favorite Batman movie and the original Batman movie is my favorite movie of all time in general.
saw this at the movies for my bday! , classic dark batman sequel
Your negatives are my positives. I love this movie! Tim Burton is the man.
This is my all time favorite Batman movie. The esthetic, the performances, the darkness... I love it all. Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman is the best Batman villain ever to appear in a live action film.

Batman Begins is better than any other live action Batman film. Totally agree with you on that.
I respectfully disagree I was born in 89 and grew up with all the Batman movies from then and after I thought this one was the best until TDK but I loved how much darker this movie is even as a kid I could tell this was the darkest coolest and most demented Batman movie and imo the best Batman of the ones from the 90s no doubt

Batman film ranking in the future?
I actually like this movie for than Batman ‘89 to be honest.
In one of the scripts a pre Two Face Harvey Dent was in the film and he was the one Catwoman wanted revenge on. The way Catwoman kills Shreck was how Harvey would get scarred. And in another script Shreck was a Cobblepot and Penguin's big brother who changed his name because he hated his parents for throwing Oswald in the sewer.
Would u do a Batman Movie Ranking Vid or Review
Dude, where'd you get that t shirt??
For me personally, the TB movies were my proper introduction to Batman. I had watched the 60's Batman as a kid, but these were a completely different thing to me that sealed in that original foundation. TAS was the cap on that foundation. To confirm how some parents felt about this movie, my mother made me record over it.
Great review as always. I like Batman returns better for the lighting.
Even the music choice for the "love theme" was very Tim Burton (although I do love the song), Face To Face by Siouxsie And The Banshees. What do you think of this song?
You said it bro. I personally love 89 the best, but this, I definitely agree with you.
Weird how much Batman has changed over the years
its one of my christmas classics ^^ watching it every year during the holidays. to me its a holiday tradition as Silent Night Deadly Night or Black Christmas (not the remake lol)
Great review, man. Batman Returns is one of my favorite Batman flicks, but I can understand why others might not like it as much.
This is my safest bet ever: Fanbase (upon reading about Tim Burton's Catwoman): No!!!!!!! Fanbase (upon seeing Tim Burton's Catwoman): Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There's no red blooded male on this Earth (who has seen the movie of course) that didn't fall head over heels for Pfeiffer's Catwoman. And Cody is wrong about Bruce and Selina not making sense: they both are broken/psychotic and they clearly feel drawn to each other because they sense the other is like them sonehow.
Cody you are so right about how dark it is. Its ironic because I love it, but I now see your point about Catwoman and Penguin, looking back at it, I was like wtf??? I would've preferred Selina to not die, but something breaks her fall and when she goes home, she still naps! As for Penguin...damn he was gross lol
My favourite Batman film.
Michelle Pfeiffers Catwoman was a woman suffering from a PTSD psychosis. She doesn't steal anything, she's just out for revenge.
