Batman Begins - The Father of Arkham

Ойындар

The Arkham series is one of the most highly regarded and loved series in gaming, crowned as not only one of the best series in general, but also the best in the superhero genre. When it comes to superhero games, Batman's ass is glued to the throne and it's taken years for another series to even come close to it’s prowess. Of course, there are some aspects of the series that people were not fond of but as an entire package, Arkham is Batman at his finest, with most games preceding his debut into the madhouse being mediocre at best. The most recent of which is Batman Begins.

Developed by eurocom and published by EA, back when the sound of their name wasn’t an Anthem for failure and the over monetization of half baked products. But perhaps I am speaking too soon, as reviews across the board expressed that this game was just average if not slightly above. Most noted that while its production value and budget was high, the gameplay was too simplistic to stand on its own, and, unlike most reviews I look at, this feels really accurate. That’s not to say there aren’t great things to see and play here, but that they have a stench of untapped potential. At least within this game. The potential here was fully realised within Arkham Asylum, which was likely the nail in the coffin for this games sequel, The Dark Knight, which much like this game, was a tie in for the movie.
Trust me, I know what you are thinking, a superhero game and a movie licensed game is a recipe for disaster, and while this game isn’t going to change that prejudice, I think it’s one of the better ones. Technically speaking it looks great and while some animations feel noticeable gamey, which contrast the faces that feel realistic. Its gameplay, while definitely simplistic, struggles to feel repetitive or boring for just how short this game is and for how many reasonable mix ups are thrown in here. That’s not to say the gameplay won’t disappoint because the boss fights which feel undeserving of that very title are no different from any other encounter, barring the larger health bar. In stark contrast to its other portions of gameplay and to it’s very successors the batmobile is shockingly fun to cruise and crash around in. The stealth elements here are basic and the fear mechanic, while unique, is in such a primitive state that it ironically, is out of the spotlight in place of basic and unintuitive combat and controls. Puzzles across the board are near non-existent and the gadgets left much to be desired. But Batman Begins was interesting to me, because of my love for Arkham, as its ideas and mechanics were so clearly used as inspiration for the Arkham series and, it acts as an Arkham before Arkham, if that makes sense. You even visit and spend a lengthy amount of time in Arkham Asylum, though it’s more gothic horrors are held back in this rendition.
Batman Begins was a wildly popular film and while this in a sense is a Batman Begins Review, it is rather a Batman Begins Game Review, specifically Batman Begins PS2. The Father of Arkham, is a title I believe is accurate, especially since Arkham Asylums success cancelled the development of The Dark Knight game. This also makes this video an honourary part of my Batman Arkham Retrospective. A psuedo Arkham Origins if you will. I'd love to see a Batman Arkham Movie like the movie accompanying The Batman Begins Game, but I guess a New Batman Game or New Arkham Game, would work too. If you liked this you can find my Batman Arkham Asylum Review linked below. This Batman Begins Analysis is part of the That Boy Aqua Arkham videos. This is a review of the Batman Begins Video Game and a Batman Begins Video Essay. Batman Arkham Origins might be the origin of Arkham, but this game serves as a greater origin to the mechanics. This the best of the Batman Licensed Games but not the Best Batman Game, Arkham holds that spot. Enjoy this Batman Begins Explained video!

It’s almost sad to hear this game was kinda good, knowing what was coming next. The same developers were going to make a Dark Knight game to release alongside that film as well. It was going to have a massive open world, bring the actors back again, and just be bigger and better in every way. Unfortunately, they didn’t have the time, resources, or technology to do what they wanted. So EA canned their project after 2 whole years of development. Then, EA’s license to Batman expired, they didn’t renew it, the video game rights were given to Rocksteady, and we all know the rest. Hearing this game was at least average sounds like they could have really improved just about everything, even if only slightly, for The Dark Knight, and made a truly spectacular game. I’m ultimately glad that didn’t happen, for obvious reasons, but I’d really like to see a timeline where EA gave them the time and money they needed to make The Dark Knight a reality.

I never understood why game devs felt the need to go wild with animations or elemental theming in games featuring fairly grounded superhero protagonists. There's a sort of wild flailing quality to Batman's animations here that just make him come off goofy, like whoever thought the exaggerated stealth takedown motions or the butterfly/jump spinning kick in combat would be good, didn't get checked during the concept phase to maybe tone it down some. Reminds me of some old Spider-Man games where they felt the need to add vfx trails to his moves like a backflip kick or rising uppercut should feature fire.

Really great video. I've never played the batman begins game, but i always had some interest in trying it out(Mostly because I just find a lot of licensed games very fascinating). Also yeah hulk ultimate destruction is a really fun game, and that would be a cool one too see you cover. Their was another batman game that came out before batman begins that also came out on the ps2/GameCube/Xbox called Batman vengeance based on the new batman adventures. have you heard of it?? It's also sort of a prototype Arkham game, and while it has alot of flaws, i really enjoyed that one as a kid. But yeah, great video as always and looking forward too your future vids!!! >:3 ❤️

The one memory I have from this game is stealing it from my cousin, I feel like he resented me for a long time because of that, well into our teenage years haha. He's a cool guy, even though we haven't talked with my mom's side of the family in a couple of years.

I'm glad you covered this game. I absolutely loved this game. I do prefer the Arkham games, but, before they existed, this was my favorite Batman game. I beat it several times. I'd also like to say that this was a decent movie tie-in game, but my favorite is X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

One thing i can def. say about arkham knight is they underestimated his body physique and what he can go through. They should had added more features where he could use his body for parkour but they relied to heavy on his gadgets and cars. I am really hoping they do something major with a new batman arkham game and make it to where he does missions in Gotham and on the ocean and underneath in an underground way out. Even put in the Court of owls(Like a side mission etc.) That is my only rebuttable to the game series but im sure that would had taken a decade if not more. Just look at RDR2 and what they did to make that game what it is today. Surely a lot of untapped potential.

I often considered Batman Begins to be the conceptual precursor to the Arkham Series. As a child, I adored the Batman Begins game, which was one of my most frequently played games during my youth. Being a fan of Batman, this game greatly appealed to my younger self.

Thank you!!! Everybody seemed to have forgotten this game, which is understandable, because it was like most movie-tie-in games, rushed and "eh". HOWEVER... it had a charm to it and a lot of the mechanics were recycled for the Arkham series.

I remember when this game came out back in the day, I was 11 and played it for the Xbox. At the time, I thought it was the best Batman game ever. I played it a lot because I was a fan of Batman, but also of superhero games. Between Spider-Man 2 and Batman Begins, I had my selection of good movie tie in games. I once suggested that Batman Begins had a skeleton of sorts for what later became the Arkham games, and to my knowledge, no one else has truly said this before. I am amazed that I can now say I am not the only one to say that Batman Begins was the spiritual predecessor to Arkham Asylum and the rest of the Arkham games.
