Ғылым және технология
Just in time for the return of Batman is an officially licensed replica of his Modular Utility Grapnel Launcher! Adam received this machined aluminum prop from the replica makers at Paragon FX Group, and its feel and finish perfectly captures the experience of wielding the Dark Knight's signature gadget. I want grapple pistol.
It blows my mind that 1989 was the first time Batman had a grappling hook gun, as opposed to just a rope on a Batarang. It's become so iconic to Batman that I can't really imagine him not having it.
@ajosepi1976

I thought surely this can't be true, so I did a bit of looking into it and yep! 100% true. There are other devices, but not quite THIS device in the comics. Trippy! Apparently Batman Issue 458 was the first one in the comics in 1991.
@ObsessiveGeek
Жыл бұрын
@ajosepi1976 You know then this isn't true, the first instance of the grapple gun was in Justice League of America #196 (1981), however, the 89 movie included the feature of the motorised-pully system that is now standard in every incarnation of the grapple gun used by Batman.

That mutual respect kinda saved _Mythbusters._ If Discovery had their way they would've turned it into another _Orange County Choppers_ sensationalized reality drama. Jamie and Adam simply refused to betray each other like that. _Mythbusters_ was genuine and honest, and they had great chemistry together. Lightning in a bottle, dude.

Professionals at work and the reason why you should avoid mixing work with family (actually more important than work and pleasure, believe it or not). You'll rarely find people, who are related by blood, be able to maintain the level headed distance between work and familiar. And i speak this from experience, having apprenticed under my father before getting my Uni diploma. Those, were some hard years, especially since we were always in the counter zone, one with another.

It bothers me how many people say they disliked each other, or Adam somehow disrespects Jamie, because they weren't off-screen friends. Every time I've see Adam talk about Jamie it seems he's absolutely GUSHING over him singing praises of his ingenuity, knowledge, and/or prowess. Case in point, this video about a Batman prop has Adam spending ~4 minutes out of the total 8:36 time talking about Jamie. Adam respects the hell out of Jamie, and it shows... But that doesn't mean they need to be friends or that their personalities would even permit them to be friends (some people you just can't mesh with). However, their professionalism and (hopefully mutual) respect allowed them to overcome any personal incompatibilities and have what seems to be one of the most AMAZING work relationships.
Really wish Jamie had gone in the same direction as Adam and was doing similar sorts of KZread stuff. Would be really interesting to see the stuff he’d build with unlimited time and tools.

Magnificent prop, and perhaps an even better story to accompany it. Wonderful, thank you.
Thanks, Adam. The story of Jamie was funny as hell. I remember the episode, but I didn't remember that he had broken his own nose.
That yellow batman logo has to be one of the best logo's out there... Super clean, super recognizable and super simple in its conveyance of information.
I think that's a new Jamie story for me! Thanks for sharing.
i imagine jamie's response to having smashed his own face was simply along the lines of " well that was unpleasant"
I saw the Tim Burton Batmans on VHS when I was a kid, and I think the grappling gun is what made me fall in love with the whole franchise forever.
Loved your Jaime impersonation. Major respect to both of you.
That has been my favorite prop from all Batman films
Loved Norms little plug for ParagonFX at the end. They are really knocking it out of the park with their props!
That is an amazing prop replica. I remember when you were showing us the original from the Prop Store. Of all the Batman films, hands down, this is the greatest prop from any of them. 😎

Prolly because it's a generic case customized for the prop. It fits in more with the modern Batman aesthetic than the 1989 one.
This is crazy. I remember as a kid being obsessed with everything about Batman and the movie... and I remember playing around and imagining myself being Batman and shooting an imaginary grapnel gun... holding this replica would just blow my mind. Lucky!
I thought you were going to bust out some Dune in the beginning... "Tried and failed? Tried and died" 😂
Wow that a beautiful piece!!
I know you from growing up watching mythbusters with my parents and today I am 38 and are still watching at least you :) That story about Jamie was really fun to hear and I actually think I remember that certain episode :)
That story was amazing!!! Replica looks perfect. wish I could afford somethig like that.
Awesome that there's such a great replica of perhaps the second most important and iconic of all Batman's gadgets (after the Batarang) in it's first incarnation. And we can all agree that it's first appearance was one of it's best versions.
We saw that episode. Was the best !!!!!. Absolutely Legendary.
Beautiful prop and the first thing I thought of was that MythBusters episode and Jamie braking his nose!
Mythbusters was a LITERAL GENERATIONAL INFLUENCER. Like Life Changing. I love listening to all these stories. I think it would be cool to get you guys all together again and make a series of behind the scenes reminiscing.
Jamie is what we refer to as on the interwebs these days is an absolute pure 100% grade A Gigachad. Also possibly the real life batman after that stunt and injury. Bravo
I get it when you can feel the physical item even if it’s a fictional device, the creativity and imagination behind it all just grabs us.
Back in '89 (Iwas obsessed with Batman) I made a replica of this using balsa wood. I wish I still had it, but it is lost to the passage of time.

Very cool prop and a very nice Laco watch!
I love watching a professional gush over something personally meaningful like this.
OMG!!!!!!!! This is sooooooooo awesome!
Oh man this is awesome.
Yes all hail Jamie !
Why satisfaction is difficult with prop replicas: People secretly want the object to be more than a prop and attempt to do what it did in the movie/tv show. And look fabulous doing it. Prop store has shown us, upon further inspection... the real thing... they look like props.
It’s just beautiful
Very detailed.
This was awesome
I really enjoy Adam Savage's Tested! I think it would be awesome to see a video with Jamie!
The detail on this is nuts. Now do you wanna get nuts?!
Beautiful replica Adam, man when my Grandfather’s doctor said to us “they don’t make them like they used to” they were right! My grandfather was in a head on collision with a friend of his and the doctors had to fuse his hip to save him, he was in recovery for twelve years, one doctor told us how he couldn’t believe he could still walk after all that time! Jamie would have probably gone through all that and recovered in like five years and still kept working!🤯💪🏻
That Jamie story really stole the show :) Wish they still worked together.
MAGNIFICENT!
great story about Jamie!😀
He's so vibrant, energetic, and full of personality. Jamie has the personality of a barn door. They are both brilliant and both tool guys and its like a pinky and the brain combo, I loved mythbusters.
Great video sir
loved that episode of Mythbusters!
Cool Adam
Ah, Jaime. Yes. Beware the quiet man.
OMG! Yes! Danny Devito was Unbelievable as The Penguin 🐧 He's my favorite villain in ALL of the Batman films!!! 😃
No Batman film since has topped this design, in my opinion. The element of being two pieces that snapped together was so cool for me as a 5-year-old kid. It evokes a sense of being a ‘gadget’ and not just a gun.

Oh, OH! Very nice. 😎
ty!
i remember that episode where Jamie broke his nose lol man that show is one of my all time favorites
YES. 🦇
So, there is one more thing about this story with Jamie that Adam has left out, and which I think will help the story make more sense. If I recall correctly, Jamie had strapped the motor to his right arm, so he couldn't just let go of the device when he got to the top. He was stuck. And since he had forgotten to put a reverse gear into the tool, that meant he didn't really have any other choice but to cut the cord. That's why he had to pull up so hard in order to reach the cord with his left hand, and why he ended up accidentally bopping himself in the face with his right hand.
The 1989 Batman movie was very impressionable to a young kid, and with a limited budget, I made a grapple gun with those name badge holders that recoil the cord and some paper clips bent into a hook taped together, and just rubber band the Batman action figure and played with that on the school playground in the early 90's.
Gotta love Jaimie.
Pretty damn awesome
When you see the box for the first time WOW but that’s not it you open the box and l am blown away the Quality of this great prop is just outstanding 😮it looks like you could just set it up and use it 😊
"I just loved Danny DeVito as the Penguin". Who doesn't? And the day Jamie says "Ow" is the day you RUN him to the hospital!
God I love that folding handle...
I worked with a woman in a library in London and her husband is a guy called Dave Merryweather and he is an architectural model maker but often works freelance on movies and he made the Batman Begins cable gun amongst other marvellous gadgets...
These videos are always so good. I'd love to see one on the puzzle box from Glass Onion. Oh man that thing is beautiful.

I once went to a Star Trek TOS prop exhibit. I was surprised at how poor the props looked. On screen they looked like fully functional devices. But IRL they looked like painted blocks of wood.

Apparently some of the "lights" used on the panels for the original ToS bridge were just gumdrops or something lit from behind. Not sure if that's internet rumour or actual fact. But its quite often true that props are frequently made "just good enough" to look good on television or in a movie. Hero props of course have better detail and quality than background props. I've been to the Star Trek on tour when it was in Detroit once upon a time, and how props look in person versus how they appear on screen is surprising. I was able to walk through pieces of the Star Trek: TNG sets they had on display, along with some filming models and props, and they looked quite different than you would expect.
Well, at least we now know where he gets those wonderful toys😊
Jamie was the savage one in this story.
"Never rub another mans rhubarb!"
"King of the Wicker People..."
Question for future question vid: have you seen any Jamie builds, since the end of Mythbusters, that impressed you and that you're allowed to talk about?
Did you ever made a video about a Star Trek Communicator of the 1960s/1970s? When I was a kid I thought how great it’ld be to have such a device once. And nowadays we use Smartphones that can do a lot more than a communicator could ever did. As far as a communicator is concerned we have Start Trek 2.0 each day in our pockets.
Plus the fact that props, usually have a whole arsenal of companions. Close up version, poster/cover version, functional version, stunt version, display version, dummy version ect. And the "one specific scene" you remember the most, might not even be the replica that they've made. And even if they made it exactly to that scene, the experience of the prop might be disappointing, cause it's not a real thing, never has been and they've done the best they can to replicate something that is so vague, that in order to get the best replica, might simply have been a vacuume form from the original buck and some crude paint. And yes, that would be disappointing to most people, but it's still "Screen accurate". It's a business i do not envy working in 😂 😂 However, that right there is beautifully executed replica for small scale production. A fine balance of Display worthy, but also tactile and semi-functional so you can fumble around, play with it and have multiple display options with it, which isn't an easy thing to do on a replica. So hats off to those guys, brilliant work.
Adam, I don't believe that it should be weathered. Batman has the money and the attention to detail that if any piece of his gear gets damaged at all. It gets immediately repaired or replaced once he has returned to the bat cave. Any damage to his gear/costume would show a weakness to his enemies.
Cool
Paragon FX? So that's where he gets those wonderful toys! edit: I commented before the last bit of the video played, lol!
I know Jamie and Adam never saw eye to eye in some respects, but man... i would love, i would love dearly, to hear stories told together, about the back stage of Mythbusters.
its everyones favorite prop! well those smoke vials ...
As the big batman fan that I am... Man, I so want one of this but, its a bit out my range atm. One day, though!
jamie is such a badass
I remember that episode but not that it was that intense 😂
Is there video of Jamie trying out his grapnel gun! What a great story.
Danny divito as the penguin scared the crap out of me as a kid I was born the year the movie came out so I was probably only 3-4 by the time I watched it definitely wasnt made for kids 😂
Very cool video. The Prop I always wanted to see, was the alien engine from the 1985 movie My Science Project. There's a picture of the prop blueprint online, although nothing about the prophet itself. 🤓
