Bath time for Sparky the Sparrow

Комедия

SPARKY BABY PHOTOS - imgur.com/a/dL45C
I found Sparky barely clinging to life, laying on a pile of other hatchlings that had all fallen from a height of about 8 feet onto concrete and died.
Sparky is 6 years and 4 months old now (born around June 20th 2014) and he is the most energetic and curious pet I have ever had. He's really smart too.
This is the hand feeding formula I have been using for wild baby birds and parrots.

What the sparrow was trying to do was judge the depth of the water before he committed to a ducking in it..........once he got soaking wet he couldn't fly well and in the wild he would have just done a quick dunk and then up into a tree to dry off........I had a few Starlings that came in the garden and they would walk around the water bowl before jumping in.....once there were 20 Starlings in the bowl all together having a mass bathing orgy that almost emptied the bird bowl.

Sparrows are pretty sociable. Porch birds :) Even in the wild, they don't have any aversion to human high traffic areas. If you have a birds nest in the awning of your porch, it's probably sparrows living there.

Last year I rescued a baby sparrow that didn't develop her feather properly on time. I gave her special treatment to help her to recover her feather. It took her almost 5months to get fully feathered. This was my first time having a bird, so I've gone through much of struggle in the beginning. I had to quit everything I was doing and researched on sparrows and learned all about birds for a long time just to save this little creature. I had to lock myself up in my room for two months to feed her every two hours. I taught her how to eat on her own, how to fly, and how to take a bath xD! She's still with me (right now she's grooming her fabulous feather on my arm lol). She's got beautiful white wings unlike other sparrows :D! And her name is Chili 🌶️

No and no It is legal to keep a sparrow in US. Even if you take them to the bird sanctuary, they wouldn't use their resources to treat sparrows and starlings, or any other birds that are not national. Sadly, people in US tend to kill sparrows since they are considered as pests. I took one starling to the bird sanctuary and they said there's high chance that it's gonna be taken down.. I didnt take my sparrow there because I'm sure they wouldn't take care of her since she had the feather problem. I went there once more just to take some advices on how to take care of the bird.

My husband and I were in the backyard and he saw something on the surface of the pool water trying to get out and he grabbed the skimmer and it was a baby bird who was severely weighed down by water. So I took him and he grabbed onto my shirt right in between my boobs lol assuming he found warmth there and he was just scared and very worn out so we let him spend the night inside a grass and twig filled shoe box until the morning. The next day he was awake and alert and seemed like he wanted to get back outside so I opened the box and let him see where he was, he stayed a little and then flew away! My husband thinks it was a baby sparrow. I’ll never forget that day

I had a sparrow when I was a child, it was a while ago but I do remember him being an energetic and inquisitive fellow, and to like being petted and carried around in our pockets. We had found him, and the other members of his brood after a storm, the wind had blown them from their nest and in to a puddle, the rest were already drowned and he was nearly, luckily we were passing by just in time to scoop him up, take him home and give him a chance at life. Weirdly he never learnt to fly properly and would rather hop-flap or climb. We tried to encourage him to fly by making obstacle courses but he always found another way around!

They do seem to be very inquisitive. Observing even the most mundane daily activities with a studios attention to detail, hopping around my back from shoulder to shoulder to get a better look. Mine was rescued like yours, 2 other siblings dead from a 9 foot fall with no feathers to slow them down before crashing to the hard concrete. It was dark and I could hear a faint peep so it took a while until I was able to locate him. How long did your pet live? I have read they can live in captivity over 20 years as opposed to 2-3 in the wild.

God bless you for rescuing this bird. I have nearly 30yrs experience in the avian field having worked "hands on" with everything from Warblers to Birds of Prey and Budgies to Macaws. So i thank you for what you did for this little guy. I can still see he/she is limping a bit but seems happy and quite chipper pardon the pun...:) And as a little side fact did you know these guys aren't sparrows at all. They are actually "weaver finches" that were brought over here along with Rock Pigeons and European Starlings back in the early 1900's.

  • @xoomvids

    @xoomvids

    2 жыл бұрын

Maybe the limp was caused by his fall from the nest? it was a height of 8 feet on to concrete and he had no feathers at the time. I had read they were weavers but I thought they were Sparrows too. Not really sure, but thanks for clarifying that. I will have to do some more reading. I have of them, another had a broken femur. Vet put some tape on it and in a few weeks he was fine.

Still, he is very very cautious around the house, any new furniture, change of curtains, freaks him out for days. He does not like change, even cleaning his cage scares him and he will sleep outside for days. My guess is that it comes from living in the streets for so many generations.

xoomvids Mine is called... Little Tweetie Tweetie. I brought him home to die but fed him some bread crumbs and lorikeet porridge in some warm water and he bounced back really fast. Now he is about 2 months old. I have him in a cat carrier by day with a white towel and a large wooden perch with his seed stick and he gets bird porridge every hour or so.. Then at night he sits by the puter and watches his favorite sparrow show and now this one. Then after his last feed which he loves to sit on my shoulder to have...I put his blanket in the cat carrier and put him next to my bed and he sleeps with me at night. I have 6 cats so I have to keep a close eye on him. :)

I live on the third floor of an apartment building overlooking a boulevard with trees that are taller than the buildings. One day, as I was sitting at the dining table, with the big sliding doors open to the outside, a sparrow flew in. He landed on the table and then flew to the floor, looked up at me and flew off to the kitchen where there was an open window and exited. I thought I was having hallucinations until he did this every day for the entire week, always at the same time of day. I am sorry to say that it took me close to two weeks to realize that he was trying to get me to feed him. Now he visits morning and afternoon, stuffs himself with birdseed and has already introduced me to his wife and one offspring. I have added water to the menu of course and am contemplating coriander which I understand sparrows like. I, however, loathe it but what won't I do for a sparrow?

  • @xoomvids

What a great story :) I think it's pretty amazing that a Sparrow would be so bold as to come into your home and then bring the kids. I do believe it is a pretty rough existence for them outdoors because they only live 2-3 years unless they are lucky enough to live indoors which from what I have read gives them a life expectancy of 13 years with one report of a Sparrow living to be 23 years. I hope you guys have a long lasting friendship, just don't be surprised if in a few years the parents are no longer around. Please keep me updated, I love this kind of news.

Perhaps since I had a tame sun conure. the swallow supposed it was fine to join in in the fun and eating frenzy. lol ... It was very cute and quite awesome ..,about 9 times in that afternoon, then not repeated Is there a scientific explanation?

Two weeks ago we were hit by the beast from the east. There’s this sparrow crying in a hedge alone and I can hear it’s mother crying on a bit further away. It was below freezing and windy. I couldn’t reach it, I talked to it for a while and had to carry on when I walk back I can hear the crying still but coming only from one hedge where mum was I suspect. I have sunflower seeds but could not make the journey out again. Hope they survive the beast.
