Loads of managers do this, they always have. Clubs barely care about shirt sales. They did this to him because he was in his 30s and his legs had gone. They've not done it to most of the people you're referring to because they're younger and there's some hope for either turning them around or getting sell on value.

He was not finished when he signed for United. In LvG's 4-3-3, United were first and top of the PL table after a few months with a midfield of Schweinsteiger, Carrick, and Herrera. After Shaw's injury and Schweinsteiger's injury, United's form got derailed.
