@@PeterBarber Speaking of tears, The Lion King was a childhood favorite of mine, and I’d been a Pentaholic for quite some time when they released “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” I saw the thumbnail, title, and channel on that vid, and I instantly thought of Mitch’s part. Just briefly imagining it, I started really crying. Not just a tear or two, but streaming tears of joy and reminiscence, rolling down my face. It took me a few months to prepare myself to be able to hear the beauty I knew was coming. Even with the hype I’d built up, they surpassed my expectations, and I still got Mitch-slapped. They always seem to out-blank blank. They out-Elton Johned Elton John. They out-Daft Punk’d Daft Punk. They even out-Queened Queen. How do they consistently pay homage while paying homage, and also manage to perfect the original, and make it better while still respecting the original?

Avi is a one of a kind bass, his lowest note is a D1 and a lot of other bass singers notes are lower than that, but avi's voice is so deep and smooth that he can make the notes above the D1 sound like they're off the piano scale, he has always been my favorite bass singer. Also watch Pentatonix Live concert of Natural Disaster and get ready to hear Avi's bass make it sound like the building is going to collapse, seriously it sounds like that.😀😂

  • @Caelinus

There is a lot of value in being the "lowest possible voice" but honestly for performance purposes it is really not that important. There are very few songs that would require or even be improved by going lower than Avi can, unless it is done as an exhibition of skill. One of the things that makes me love Pentatonix is that even though all of them have the skills to dominate a song, they are almost entirely focused on the sound of the group. They give everyone a chance to shine, but they never seem to show off for its own sake, and only do so when they have a real musical reason to do it.

  • @MichaelMcCloud29

I didn’t know Avi went at a D1, I know he’s done F#1 as one of his lowest chest but I think his sweet spot range is like Eb2-Bb1. I agree with the take of any lower tends to be gimmicky and unnecessary. Home free and Voiceplay make it work but I think they are such different styles I don’t think it would work for Pentatonix as well

And last year was really rough for me, not only dealing with a lot of stress at work, but my bf got a blood clut in the brain and had to stay in hospital for almost two months. The one thing that got me through this, was music. I realized that there were various reaction channels here and started listening to them. Slowly, I added Home Free and Voiceplay to my playlists, and then I found Tomi P and of course The Bass Gang. I have spent a whole year filling my life with a capella music and I love it. On the recorded version Avi does double track the super low very quiet notes during his solo (so they can be dropped during live versions) but the higher bass part is done by Scott throughout Avi's solo... you can tell the tonal difference between Scott & Avi's tone if you listen. In the live version Scott does it all and you tell its not as low in parts as on the track. Scott does great in covering bass line for Avi but a baritone can't get quite as low as a true bass (Scott does have amazing range). That is why it's easier with covering for Matt since Matt is a bass baritone. Avi's chocolate whiskey warm voice is very distinctive and unique. Kevin does use voice percussion during the song but the video doesn't really show it. Avi & Kevin talk about it in interview...adding little ear candy on recorded version that can be removed for live performances that really don't change the song but just make it pure perfection.

It's amazing how well they can sing together, and individually! I would LOVE to hear more from this group of singers! They are VERY special!! Just LOVE them! Amazing!! I can't say it enough! I want to hear more from this group! I really do! Why nobody has made this happen, is what has me wondering why? It's such a rare thing, to have singers with all this talent ,combined together, and be able to listen to such beautiful sounds is something I would happily pay for ! Am I the only one that wants to hear more from this group? I can't be! They are amazing! And I am addicted already! Hook me up people! I need another dose of this musical group singing together! Having withdrawals! More! More! More! Can I get another "Hallelujah"?!?!?

This was how I discovered PTX one night in early spring 2019...fell down the rabbit hole listening to them (and then found Ring of Fire w Home Free and Avi and that was my gateway to them a few nights later). I ended up going to see PTX w my now 14 yr old son at Madison Square Garden in May/June 2019 and by that time Avi was not with them anymore. They did sing this and the most *human* thing I remember was that Scott was off pitch for the first two measures!! Proves that they are singing live and that even tho they are technically incredible, they are not infalable.

No, Avi doesn't do lead and bass line both. The moment that Avi starts on the lead Scott takes over the bass line and keeps it up until Kirstie takes the lead. When PTX goes into the studio, they do not add any effects that they can't duplicate live. Therefore, whether live or in the studio PTX doesn't use any electronic trickery.

That's not quite true, I think the most noticeable is the echo used in Sound of Silence and even in earlier songs like First Things First there's a bit of trucks. And obviously more often with their more recent works. Not that I think it takes away from the beauty at all of course

  • @Caelinus

@@ensanesane They can use that stuff live I think. I do not think they claim that they do not use post-production or effects, they just make sure that their songs are performable live without pre-recording, so that they can actually give the performances people want. Layering Avi into two different vocal tracks singing totally different lines would make the song impossible to perform.

@@Caelinus First Things First has Scott on 2 vocal lines at once which is why they've never performed it live. Almost everything from the lucky ones album is the same, super layered. This song was on a Christmas album so they needed time to film, edit, and release it at the beginning of the Holiday season. To get the proper holiday "feel" they wanted it to look like it was cold out which is why they're all bundled up. Unfortunately, all this combined so they were filming this on a Southern California playa in late summer, when it was over a hundred degrees out there. This resulted in filming in many short segments with lots of breaks to cool off in between. In their videos that take place in one location outdoors or with natural light, watch how the shadows and light changes and comes back during a video. This video and Sound of Silence took all day to film and Bohemian Rhapsody took all night. They started BoRhap at 10PM and almost got caught by the sunrise. In a few scenes you can see the pre-dawn lighting the horizon. And no, Avi doesn't carry the base line while doing solos, Scott is a baritone and uses the bottom of his register to carry it. He spans from mid-bass range to well up into tenor range. As far as building up to the "belting" part, I like how it's often Kirsty, the lone female, who gets to let loose.

Since at least 20 people have already pointed out that the bass is covered by Scott when Avi sings, I'm just going to comment that you seriously need to give Scott props. His range and his talent as a singer are astonishing. Most reactors focus on Avi, Kevin or Mitch, and sometimes Kirstin, but Scott is a powerhouse in his own right. Every singer in this group (including both Avi and Matt) are insanely capable of standing out on their own but the collective that is Pentatonix is the focus. I believe it was Scott who was the driving force behind the actual creation of PTX and getting it where it is today. He said it himself, "There is no Plan B."
