    What really bothered me about the Back to the Future scene is that it is several years too early for the model of Gibson that Marty is playing.

    Here an analogy (and true story) using chess. Our chess club was meeting and we were to have a chess master visit us. He arrived late. Two guys were playing near the door when the master arrived. One of the players stood up quickly to greet the master and upended the board. After pleasantries, the players put the board back to the way it was, but the master corrected them: "white's king bishop was here" and he moved the piece. This master had sight of their board for maybe 3 seconds before they disturbed it, and in that time took it all in.

    This was fun Luke. It reminded me of an episode of Mythbusters, if you are familiar with the show. They would often do this with Hollywood movies as well.

    Enjoyed. Reminds me of the live version of Sting's 'Bring On the Night'. At the start with drums and vocals happening you can hear Winton Marsalis yelling "what key is this in?".

    One thing I have been doing since I am one who has been responsible for creating the chord charts for our church worship team (less so now with the advent of sites like songselect by CCLi and Onsong (created by a local worship pastor here in PA initially for church worship teams) is that I try to "play by ear" using recordings. I can recommend that as a GREAT way to train your ear to pick up not just the key, but the chord progressions. And learn the Nashville number system -- I have more difficulty with numbers when I play bass or keys, but no problems at all when I'm on the acoustic. It's a GREAT tool to help you learn what are the "normal" chords for a given key -- 1, 4, 5 2-, 6-, etc. That will help you play in ANY key!

    Hi Luke. I love and try my best to listen to tracks then play by ear. So, once I have decided what key we are in ( E, B etc ) what comes next ? The Major or the Minor 3rd then the 5th ???? Or is it a 1, 4, 5. ? What ever happens I am just loving doing my own thing so long as it sounds good to me. Your video of Pink Floyd's '' Money Bass line ''is your best video ever matey !!!!! It taught me so much about playing with a pick !!! Thank you.

    Can't believe you sat through "Pitch Perfect". Never seen it, but have to agree. My exposure to written harmonies of vocal arrangements are hard enough to maintain let alone merely jump into. Reflecting on "learning songs on the way a gig". I played bass for some guy who would teach me 5 of his new songs right before we stepped on-stage. What's worse they weren't even songs. More like folk vocals over top of 20 obscure chords that totally exceeded my knowledge of theory to this day. Times like that, it's best to just screw the theory and play by ear the best that you can. Keep things simple enough to just "compliment" the song w/out meandering out of key. If you do, the right note is usually right next to it. I'm by no means a virtuoso of any kind. What I've learned from playing and conversing with gigging musician's is the audience the last to know that you've screwed up. Just play on like you meant to do that, or it didn't happen at all. The first, and probably last person to notice is you. So, if you focus to much on your mistake that's what will resonate with the audience and even effect your playing. In the case of live music - we're only human, we're going to fuck up and so be it.

    i think johnny cash tuned up a full step for that song on the original recording (i could be wrong im not 100% on that) so saying it was in E is kind of correct. most people play it with a capo though

    Go to any bluegrass/roots music festival, and you'll see plenty of folks playing music they've never heard before. Forget what's happening on stage, the real excitement is what's happening in the jam tent or the parking lot. Best advice I got when learning the mandolin was to find a guitar player who knew the song and watch his hands for the chord changes. Bluegrass uses mostly open chords so it's easy to read the chord shapes.

    but bass in bluegrass? well maybe upright i spose. and thats the thing i hate the most about being a guy that only plays bass. acoustic jams in parking lots at hippie shows and campfire jams. everyone is jamming and i cant join. i had an acoustic bass before but nobody can hear the damn thing. i been thinking about finding a way to hook up into a car stereo at least.

    Not from a movie, but ... Al Kooper sneaked into Bob Dylan's session for "Like a Rolling Stone" and grabbed the seat at the organ. He didn't know the song. And if you listen carefully, the organ is an eighth note behind for most chord changes because Kooper waited to be sure what the chord was.

    Don’t worry about people ‘frowning upon’ using tabs - if it gets you playing, then that’s awesome! That being said, a lot of user generated tab is pretty dodgy - it could be that this have you found is in that camp. In general tab is pretty bad at notating rhythm. It sounds like whoever wrote this tab has tried to incorporate regular music notation methods, but it’s just confusing you. With any ‘tied’ notes, if it’s confusing you, if you can copy, then edit the tab itself, just delete the 2nd note of any ‘tied’ pair. Or if you can edit it, do your best to ignore the 2nd note and don’t play any of them.

    Original key for Johnny B Goods is Bb

  • @BecomeABassist

    Which makes it even stranger that the key of B is mentioned. Perhaps Michael J. Fox was supposed to say Bb, but just flubbed the line. I know in the original screenplay, that little pep talk *wasn't* in the script. The original line was 'Follow me fellas. Let's rock and roll' The original script is here: www.dailyscript.com/scripts/bttf4th.pdf Scroll to 138 for this line.

  • @BecomeABassist

    @BecomeABassist

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey @Anthony Bladon - If you check the video, I say it’s closer to F than E and when I was editing the video found that it was roughly in between the two and wrote that in the bottom right corner at the 1:45 mark. Just because someone is playing an E shape doesn’t mean that’s exactly what’s coming out of their instrument - just like the Jimi Hendrix example. He’s playing an E shape, but it’s an Eb coming out of his guitar.
