Bass Pedalboard, Talk and Jams With Dishan Abrahams - That Pedal Show

Life too short for long KZread videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Our first bass video!
In this video we welcome our great friend and utterly monster bass player, Dishan Abrahams. Dishan has a glittering list of credits including Kylie Minogue, Leona Lewis and many, many more. His current main gig is with UK singer/songwriter, Jess Glynne.
Before filming, Dan had put together Dishan’s latest board, so we take the opportunity to go through it while talking more generally about the bass discipline and mindset.
You’ll also notice the equally wonderful Dougie Mussard on drums to provide a bit of context for the bassing, not to mention un petit peu de jammage as well. Dougie and Dan have been playing together since before the dawn of time, so bless ’im he had no choice but to be the TPS Band drummer. Hooray!
We spectacularly managed to not have a bass amp handy, so we improvised with a JHS Colour Box and a powered PA cab for the room. The DI is treated to an Ampeg SVT and 8x10 Plugin via our Universal Audio Apollo 8P.
The drums are mic’d in the Glyn Johns fashion, and the guitar amps are mic’d as usual, so there’s spill everywhere on the jams. Room baby, room.
And yes, the bass is high in the band mixes. It’s a bass video!
Enjoy the video…

As a guitarist even, this is one of my favourite shows yet. Playing with people rather than in your bedroom is the best part of playing music. Developing that instinct is the hardest and slowest thing I've found, but when you start to get it, is the most rewarding. It's as if you have to throw out all you know about playing and start to just listen instead. Playing with people taught me that my rhythm sucked and now thats the bit i try think about most. Simpler and tighter is always more enjoyable than listening to someone treating the rest of the band like a backing track for themselves. And amen to being the worst member in a band! I still suck but that's so important for developing!

As a bass player primarily, you guys have helped me so much on my quest to be a better guitar player. Loved this episode! Dishan is a pocket monster! If you're taking requests for bass-centric episodes, I'd love to see a shootout between the various styles of DI boxes (powered, passive, Jensen transformers, etc.) There's a few out there on KZread, but they all lack the clarity you guys seem to provide on every topic. Thanks from the US.

I love hearing his philosophy. It was about 14 years of playing guitar before I picked up bass (ended up playing for 4 years in a band as a bassist). The one thing that pushed my guitar playing forward more than ANY other thing. It's the most important guitar on stage, and the one taken least seriously by most. It can single-handedly make or break (read: ruin) a band's sound.

Rhythm first. Always. Dishan really nailed it on that one. The dryness of the new room really brings out the detail of the recordings, good call on that construction decision. Sound wise the intro blues sounds like a record. I did a double take because I thought for a moment a backing track was playing. And kudos to Mick for those horn-like licks on the outro funk. The four of you just made the world a better place. Greetings from Puerto Rico.

I was really feeling bad for Douggie, and then Mick came over and gave him a hug! Good man Mick! Overall, this was an awesome video! As a guitarist who **tries** to do some home recording, I feel clueless when I add the bass track. I know that playing bass is more than just playing the root of every chord! This was a really good intro, and I definitely would like to see more of this! (I also like the band synergy talk, particularly when Doug and Dishan talked about what they were omitting to make space for each other.)

I am so freaking happy you guys made this video. I love Dishan's approach to the instrument and the I agree so much with how he thinks about bass, and it was just awesome to see him break things down and pull back the curtain on what makes a good bassist. Also that jam at the end was *unreal*! There was just so much groove and feel between all of you guys, it was just awesome. If you guys are looking to do any more bass videos, the one that I'd love to see is a look at bass tones, both with just the amp and also with effects, and how they relate to guitar tone and the rest of the band, kind of like when you looked at guitar solo tones a while back and broke down what made a bad tone and then what you could do to make it better. For me, a big part of how I approach any bass tone is to see where it fits sonically with whatever else is going on, and I think it's the biggest mistake that a lot of bassists make is to forget that, especially when it comes to adding effects on the bass. Like guitarists, we bassists are just as guilty at find tones that sound great on their own, but in band just don't work. The low end drops out, or the high-mid note definition is lost, or whatever. I'd love to see you guys delve more into that relationship between bass tone, guitar tone and the rest of the band, drums, etc. As always, cheers for the great videos guys! Can't wait to see what you tackle next!

Didn't think a "bass" episode would be as informative as this was. Mr. Abrahams is a class act. Some great tips for guitar, bass, and drums. Regardless of the instrument.

Young Mr Abrahams has certainly got his Funk Thang going. Pleasure watching this one. I'd have sworn he was playing Flats till he told us they were Wounds.

Thanks to Dishan I got me Precision out and gave that 44:54 groove a seeing to. Somehow the Resurrection Shuffle got in there at times ... fun was had (with my clothes on)

Groovaliciousnesserocity!!!!!!! I know you know it, but you guys are so blessed to be around and a part so much good music. Thanks for sharing with us. I have a nephew who is an accomplished bass player. I never really paid much attention until I had the opportunity to hang around him some. Then, I checked out All About the Bass on Anderton's, just for the heck of it. Nathan and Lee are both very engaging and would make good guests on TPS, I believe. I have really enjoyed learning more about the instrument. I can't wait for the TPS Band!
