Bass, Goop and Golden Shiners

Спорт

in this 10 April, Henry County Missouri outing, a nice lot of bass were caught on a couple of Z-Man lures: 1. PB&J TRD on a Finesse BulletZ jighead and, 2. (Best today) A modified Z-Man FattyZ on a 2/0 ChinlockZ hook. The modification was to cut off the "tail" of the FattyZ, thus shortening it to about 4 inches, and then splitting the end into what resembled a TicklerZ or Hula StickZ.
An interesting component of this excursion was to identify what kept tugging , yanking and dropping my ElaZtech lures. Initially I thought it was aggressive bluegill, but a Z-Man LarvaZ revealed that the "yankers" were in fact Golden Shiners. I'd not seen GS's this big, but researched them on line and, sure enough, that's what they were. Golden Shiners are really popular big bass and catfish baits in a lot of places in the country. For example, sometimes folks blow up balloons and attach a hook, line and Shiner and just throw it out and wait till something big drags it under. This small pond is truly infested with GS's and perhaps the bass population are foraging on them as a major food source.
Rudie makes a photo appearance or two for his fans..... :)
Enjoy the show!

Thanks, Bill, much appreciated. When I got home and researched what those Golden Shiners were I discovered they are real popular for big bass and catfishing in a lot of places. Several YT vids show folks putting them under a balloon, so they swim around until something grabs them. They sure aren't typical crappie minnows! Best wishes, Don

I wouldn't mind having a bucket of those Golden Shiners for catfish bait :)

Ha, thanks for stopping by, Michael. This was the first time I've encountered (actually caught) golden shiners in an MDC pond. They were thick as thieves in there! Best wishes, Don

You did really well, some very nice bass. About the “aged golden shiner” you suggested Sparkie use for something. Sounds great, let please let your viewers know what kind of bread you enjoyed the most for your “golden shiner” sandwich.🤢 Great video, you had a great trip. Enjoyed watching.👍

Thanks, Jack. I love the battles with the bass in that pond although it is the lowest it has been in years. I think Sparky's favorite bread for "aged" shiner sandwiches is pumpernickel. With horseradish and jalapeños. I doubt that specialty is on the menu at the Lumber Yard or 58.... 😂😂 Looks like we had our last night in the 30s so I'm looking forward to late April and May fishing (if the winds simmer down). Have a wonderful week, Don

Sis, yes, a Pretty decent bass outing despite the goop. Good old PBJ came thru - again. The reason I shortened that FattyZ by an inch or so was influenced by the Golden Shiners yanking on the full sized (5") one I was using. Those big "Minnows" were Grown up golden shiners. Folks buy them at bait shops and fish for big bass and cats with them. Lots of YT vids of using big Golden Shiners. I suspect that someone dumped out their minnow bucket with small ones and they have grown up and are everywhere in that pond. I've never run into them in an mdc pond before. Hi to HN. RTR xxxooo Don

Those shiners were monsters! I would have hooked one on and maybe you would have gotten a monster bass? Great day on the water! Tight Lines!

Thanks Dave, always good to hear from you and I appreciate your comments. I actually thought my plastics were getting yanked by big bluegill and was surprised that they were those big shiners. I probably caught a dozen or more of those crazy things using a tiny micro finesse hook they could bite. Sadly, there are so many that I bet they compete with the bluegill for food sources. I'm sure they spawn and the bass gobble up the little ones...and maybe some of the bigger ones. My poor pond really needs rain 😢. Have a great week, Don
