I recently uploaded the first set of this stellar performance by Bass Desires. Here is set two, as promised in that first posting. Although the songs Samurai Hee-haw and Bass Desires were repeated in both sets, you get to hear different solos by Scofield and Frisell. Frisell's solo in Bass Desires devolves into him playing one of his classic 1980s loopy mad scientist experiments (starting at 57:44) followed by an Erskine solo.
Although I heard a lot of great music that night, Bill Frisell's solo in this set on John Scofield's Thanks Again just blew me away at the time he played, and it continues to do so each time I hear it. He starts out by stating the melody (16:19), and even just that is incredibly expressive. But then he moves on to improvise a solo that starts out (17:22) with a cleanish compressed tone, builds that up, then blasts off with distortion-laden runs (19:19) and peaks with some beautifully-controlled feedback (20:04), before fading into the background. It remains after 38 years one of my all-time favorite guitar solos.
I'd be remiss if I didn't give Peter Erskine his props, who rocked all night, and took a pretty sweet solo with the band vamping behind him on Hee-haw (36:00). And band leader Marc Johnson was steady throughout, and closed out the set with a showcase for the bass accompanied only by Frisell, Black is the Color.... The ad in the banner is from the the Village Voice advertising the gig.
