Vowels form the basis of the melodies that we sing. Without them, it's all a bunch of clicks, pops and hums. Typically, vocal training focuses on five main vowels, but this leaves out many that fall in between and form the basis for our vowel modifications in the zona di passaggio (near the 'break' in our voices.)
In this video I have exercises to practice focusing these vowels, using the familiar ones to help out.
I have also included a short diphthong practice that includes a short lesson in vowel modification at the zona di passaggio (near the 'break' in our voices.) This is critical to smooth register changes!
Finally, I wrap it all up with a nice messa di voce exercise to chill out with that also uses vowels from our expanded vowel palate.
Enjoy!

Thank you! Finally I've found a scale that goes down enough and not too high for my extension.

For guys having trouble remembering the key words, I may be showing my age, ... but a pen and paper helps a lot.

this was great! I understood more about how to approach the secondo passaggio from the brief explanation around 12:45 than from many of your other videos. I'll check out more of your videos specifically on this topic, but that was a great demonstration!

Thank you Jeff for this bass-baritone exercise! In second half of the exercise, my voice was going back and forth from head voice to chest, but I had difficulty in head voice are that I can't sing vowels fully. I think I need the improve my breathing :)

Couple Finnish sounding vowels - thank you. I sing mainly in German nowadays. I switch quite often to lower octave when you get around e4. I get more warming up, but I don't have to stretch. My fach is lower than that.

I love these lessons so much! What is a Bass-baritones range to you? Is it about from C2 - C4? I also have another question. Alot of times i wake up in the morning with a deep voice and can sing down to an A1. Is there a way to keep this low range throughout the day or solidify it permanently? Thanks!

excellent, all your videos have supported me a lot, my proffesor say I can go from C2 to A4, I can be a bass profund If I push lower, but say I have also squilo, what do you recommend me, push my bass range or push as baritenor?

I would recommend you discuss it with your teacher! They will know your voice best, help you evaluate your overall range, and be able to test out with you the various skills that one or the other fach would require. Best! Jeff

I find that I tilt my head upwards to reach the lowest notes, is this bad? It doesn't cause any noticable strain on my throat or voice that I can feel. I'm trying to expand my lower range and also get a fuller sound down there, so I follow warmups like these. Do you have any other advice on how to go about this? I know that in terms of lower range there often isn't that much you can do to increase it, but I wanna work on it anyway. As always, great video!

  • @JeffRolka

Thanks for your kind words! Tilting your head upwards, and the effects, are greatly dependent on where you're beginning from. It's possible that you're in fact bringing it up to a more optimal position. As for lower note response, while you're balancing out vowels you may find that emphasizing the brighter side of the resonances helps with the overall production. Over time you can lean into it a bit to increase airflow and consequently volume. I hope that helps! Best! Jeff

Jeff, you speak about the dipthong and the higher notes over the passaggio. You seem to suggest that the dipthong vowels will happen "come what may", are you suggesting indulge the dipthong or fight against it? I would have thought the latter ??

  • @JeffRolka

    @JeffRolka

More the latter, yes. Hold it off as long as you can. That will vary based upon style and necessity of intelligibility! Loved the pen and paper comment too! Jeff

Thanks for replying. The higher notes, especially going through the zona di passaggio. Maybe it's not about pitch exactly, I might not know for certain how to use head voice. Is it supposed to sound weak? Sometimes I even hurt my voice trying.
