    @@basqueberserk Thanks for asking! I was born in San Francisco but my family goes a long way back from Bizkaia, particularly the town of Ea. I learned Spanish at home but, now that I'm older, want to keep Euskara alive in my family. The connection between the language and Basque identity/history is something truly special as it reflects the strength and unity of Euskaldunak against various trials and oppression throughout the ages

    @@jaimesantiagolonga Ooh, I think I’ve seen a paper on the dialect of Ea somewhere. Super cool! It’s always really nice when American Basques have that urge to reconnect with euskara, in my opinion. Just a really unique and admirable goal. How long have you been learning?

    @@plixypl0x in Larry Trask’s Etymological Dictionary of Basque, the entry “*iLe” is the supposed origin for both ‘hil’ (month) and ‘ilargi’ (moon) which is “hil-argi” (month/moon-light). Trask says here that month “*iLe” isn’t related to death “hil”, but I suppose they certainly could be. Either way, they’re homophones so I remembered hil means both “death” and “month” by thinking that the moon “dies” each month (like was assumed by some older societies).

    Similar to Spanish alphabet sounds?

  • @basqueberserk

    @basqueberserk

    Yeah! In the Spanish region at least, Basque sounds are a lot similar to Spanish. On the French side, they can have a more French-sounding quality, of course. ☺️

    The letter 'H' pronounced would seem less like Spanish and French l, perhaps more like how a purer basque might sound?

    It’s hard to tell what it might have sounded like long ago without Spanish or French influence, maybe Basque influenced Spanish or French H pronunciation. 😉😊
