Basketball Videography Mistakes I Made as a Beginner Sports Filmmaker

I made these mistakes as a beginner sports videographer so that you don’t have to!
In this video talk about some of the biggest mistakes that I made when I was starting to film sports highlights and basketball videos. I also go over what I should have done differently to improve in my early days as freelance sports videographer. You’ll learn about the lenses you should use, what you should focus on filming, and how to edit videos faster through listening to my experiences as a freelance videographer filming sports.

    Set your focal length to 18mm and f/5.6, then when you zoom to 200mm the aperture doesn't change and neither does the exposure. Easy fix to for people using variable aperture zooms.

    @@petersarellas Right! But for beginner basketball shooters, the 18-200 is probably the most practical first lens to get once they realize the kit can't zoom to the opposite end of the court when they are on the baseline. So stopping down is a great option to keep consistent exposure. I learned this from experience as I used to have the same problem, lol. (Along those same lines, the sooner you can get away from auto white balance the better!)

  • @petersarellas

    @petersarellas

    4 жыл бұрын

    Personally I don’t ever feel the urge to shoot anything other than a wide shot of the opposite baseline when I’m standing on one end so I prefer a 18-105mm or something in that focal length if using an APS-C sized sensor so I’d rather have a lens that’s a bit faster without compromise. That being said, my preferred focal lengths are purely subjective based on the way that I shoot and will vary from shooter to shooter depending on their needs.

    Definitely give it a go! As long as you’re being courteous and using common sense I’ve found that the worst thing that’ll happen if someone says you’re in the wrong spot is you’ll have to apologize and move. If you’re really worried about that you can also try going to different areas that aren’t access restricted like in the bleachers or upper level of an arena. Glad you feel better about that now!

    Definitely mistakes i’ve made. I have an outdated canon T3 & recently filmed one of his games. Haven’t dove into editing at all & also would like to know which lens would you recommend i use. Another question is do you have like some kingld of agreement with schools or the local schools district to be court side filming?

  • @petersarellas

    @petersarellas

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey there! Thanks for checking out the video. Lenses are definitely subjective and depend on the environments you’re filming in but with a crop sensor camera like the t3 id recommend something in the range of a 24-70 or 24-105 if you can get it, preferably with an f2.8 aperture since iso performance on that camera isn’t great. As far as agreements to film courtside go, I most of the time am hired by the league that I’m filming for and get courtside access that way.

    How do u film in games lol do you be running up the court and stuff or do you be in the stands? Is there 2 camera because I want to do my friends game but I don’t know where to position my self

  • @petersarellas

    @petersarellas

    3 жыл бұрын

    To sum it up in a few words, I usually pick a spot around the court and stay there for a few minutes of gameplay, then move onto somewhere else so that I can cover a lot of angles. If I can I like to bring a friend to operate a second camera because then I can cut those angles together to better show a play and I have more coverage to work with in the edit. Definitely don’t go running up and down the court lol that’s what zoom lenses are for.

  • @petersarellas

    @petersarellas

    2 жыл бұрын

    You definitely don’t need it (I almost always shoot handheld) and if you’re flipping between photo and video then taking your camera off of a stabilizer and then balancing it again every time you switch might not be practical. You could use a stabilizer to get some cool shots but it’s more challenging and definitely not necessary.

    1. For Sony crop users, just get the 18-105 f4. I have been shooting with those for 4 years now, still the most versatile lens for the price. If you can only afford one prime lens, go for either 35 1.8 or 50 1.8. 3. Following the ball can be pretty tricky at first but it’s worth it. Probably took me more than a year to properly follow the ball 🥶😂. For smooth shots, a strap helps me a ton btw. My basketball channel is @kicksgeeks btw :3
