Basket Weave End Grain Cutting Board

rkwoodsworking.com/
I made this basket weave pattern cutting board for a friend of mine. I achieved the weave pattern by using maple, wenge and padauk. This was my first go at making this pattern. Glue up was the real challenge. Doing a little at a time over a period of several days finally got me there. I used the festool domino to help keep all of my pieces level. My only regret, was in the end I cut one side of the board down because I wasnt happy with the finger recess. This exposed three of the dominoes. It doesnt look bad, but was not my original intent. The final dimensions are 17"x 23"x2 1/8", weighing in at 19bls.

How many glue ups was that? Is there another way that would have involved strips so you could cut that down? Beautiful result and now I’m worried that I may try it too. 🤣

I don’t remember precisely how many it was, but it was several. You could probably achieve the same result with fewer glue ups but this worked for me and I recommend doing a little at a time, especially your first go at this.

Very well done! I agree that a drum sander is well worth the money if you are going to make cutting boards. One question I have is what were the dimensions of the boards you began the project? Thanks!

Thank you Keith. It’s been a while, but if memory serves me(it usually doesn’t) the padauk came from 2”x2” turning blanks that were 18” or so long. 8/4 maple- no idea what the dimensions were and 4/4 wenge that I resawed into thinner boards. I wish I could be more specific. I do remember the material being expensive and not going as far as I wanted. It was my original intention to make 2 boards but there just wasn’t enough material.

One thing I struggle with is planer snipe... I see you checking your measurements at the end of the board after running it in the planer. So if there were snipe, the rest of the board would have thickness error right? How do you account for this in your process? Thanks and great board!

I do get a little snipe, but not enough that it throws off my thickness measurement. To be honest I didn’t even think about it.
