Basket Case Ditch Witch 3700 diesel trencher...can this old girl be fixed up?

Hey everyone. In the shop today (well, this time last year) is a Ditch Witch 3700DD that has quite a few issues. I thought this footage had disappeared until a few weeks ago when I finally located it, so I got it edited down into what you're about to see here.
So, whats going on with this thing? Well, aside from being extremely difficult to start, it dumps fuel all over itself whenever we get it running, it leaks hydraulic oil everywhere, the electrical system is a mess, the oil cooler fan is completely shot, and it's generally filthy and needs a thorough bath. Can we get this thing fixed up and working properly again? Watch and find out!

What are the odds of getting that service manual? I have the same unit- awesome machine, just needs a little work.

what type of hydraulic oil does this machine use?

It's a pretty forgiving system. We used Chevron THF1000 since we had it on hand for all of our other equipment, but any universal tractor hydraulic fluid should work just fine.

Did I miss the cooling fan replacement or did you cover that? I'm currently working on the same machine, ironically, with the same problems. One difference is mine has a backhoe attachment on the front. I really appreciate your video . I'm about to order the rubber hose kit from DK . I was wondering if you ordered a new fan from duetz or just replace it with a 12v parts house fan?

I ended up replacing the fan off camera. Super simple to swap out - just pull the airbox and piping off to get better access, lift out the battery, and there are four bolts (one at each corner) and the wiring connector. Fan lifts right out. I ended up ordering the Ditch Witch fan directly from them. It was spendy, about $300 as I recall, but it dropped right in and saved me a ton of work. Ditch Witch has a pretty comprehensive parts website thats free to sign up for, and once you log in you can input the serial numbers off of your machines/attachments and pull up schematics, parts lists, etc. and you can order items directly from your closest dealer. Pretty great product support, IMO. Glad you found the video helpful - these are really neat machines that are very versatile. Give me a shout if you have any other questions, happy to help.

Great video. I have the same machine with the back hoe up front. Mine seems to burn alot of oil, might need to check the valve adjustment. Also my hydraulics are weak but it might be from water contamination in the hydraulic oil? Idk

@@lbaseler water contamination would cause the oil to become milky but unless there was a lot of it in the tank, it wouldn't cause functionality issues by itself. If the oil level got too low, it's possible that it caused the pump to cavitate a little and aerate the oil, which would cause sluggishness. I would make sure the oil looks clean and that the tank is full, then slowly cycle each hydraulic function several times to work any trapped air out of the system.

I have the same one. Where is the gear oil located

The front and rear differentials are the only things on this machine that utilize gear oil to the best of my knowledge. There might some in the drive for the digger, but I'm pretty sure that whole system uses hydraulic oil.
