One idea for basilisks is that they turn creatures into different materials based on their creature type or something like that. Celestials turn to marble or gold, fiends into obsidian, giants into iron, etc.

This made me think of a dragon or basilisk with a metalic breath attack. Like they breath gaseous metal that condenses on the air and objects around it, so it quickly fills the air with microscopic metal dust which is toxic, and it also quickly coats things in a layer of deposited metal, quickly hardening into an encasement. Similar to turning something to stone

I think the Basilisk's saliva has anti-petrifying properties. It would make sense since swallowing jagged rocks wouldn't be pleasant that, much like a person seeing their meal before them, a basilisk starts to heavily salivate and will coat the chunk of its victim it rips off in its saliva, waiting for it to un-petrify before swallowing. It would also make un-petrifying party members or training a pet basilisk more forgiving as saliva would be fairly easy to gather.

Perfect timing with the video. My party has discovered a cave system that will end up having a basilisk as a guard for naga, a gorgon (behind a gate), and finally a maedar and medusa.

I like to think that some people very much enjoy being turned to stone. Like you can still feel everything when youre turned to stone, youve just sacrificed mobility for stability. And after spending some time being a statue if they were to be turned back it would feel very destabilizing and flimsy, and some might panic, as in their stone form they might have lasted 1000s of years but after being turned to flesh they have mere decades

A couple things come to mind when thinking of Basilisks and Alchemy. First An alchemist thinks they have successfully created the elixir of life. In an act of hubris, they drink it, and turn themselves into a Basilisk. Second, A raging Basilisk in an alchemical lab, undergoing radical changes as it accidently exposes itself to the various alchemical components brewed up in the lab. This could be an incredibly fun random table to build.

This one really got me inspired, particularly the ties between basilisks and alchemy. I’m thinking that a basilisk is created in an attempt to make a living philosopher’s stone as its victims are turned to gold instead of stone. Who would employee such a thing? Maybe a moralist society that uses it as punishment for criminals or other undesirables and then uses the statues to mint their coins, enriching their city both morally and commercially. Maybe a palace is filled with gold statues of past rulers granted the mercy of enshrinement on their deathbeds. I’m sure there are others, but I’m on the clock and it’s back to work for me!

My favourite basilisk usage (at least up until "teacup basilisk" - gonna steal that!) was from "The Mines of Bloodstone". Forgive hazy memory here - this is a very old high-level module series (2E?) that was the spiritual ancestor of Kingmaker, I guess. PCs find a jumble of stone chunks at the bottom of a long and wonky ladder. If their rogue isn't sufficiently cautious they will poke their head over the top and stare into the eyes of a basilisk lairing in the chamber above. They petrify, topple down the shaft and shatter, adding their chunks to the pile. The giggle here is that the PCs are high enough level that fixing petrification is trivial, but making sure they give their rogue back their original nose (or even the correct number of hands) is definitely non-trivial. Opens the way to ideas about creative reconstruction of broken petrified people, or stone-shaping prior to revivification for fun and profit. Mostly fun though... their cleric wasn't the nicest fellow...

Sea Basilisks and Cobra Basilisks are aquatic based serpentine variations of the classic monstrosities that lurk in the deep waters of the dark ocean. Cobra Basilisks do not petrify with a stare but instead with a venomous bite, the poison is harvested and used to produce protections from Medusa and Gorgon. Sea Basilisks have adapted a venomous defense as well but they do not petrify, instead they boil you from the inside rapidly. On the first failure you gain the effects of a Haste spell, if you succeed on the second save you gain a level of exhaustion, if you fail your second save your body begins to dehydrate as steam pours from every orifice.

The 2e Pathfinder Basillisk did the anti-petrification thing well in my book. Namely that it's blood - for a short period of time after death - can be smeared on those petrified to return them.

an idea i have beeb sitting on for a while is the healing basilisk, a total inversion of this terrifiying low level monster. imagine a battle were a PC is horribly maimed, straight up taking out a limb, sight, etc. and then you have an NPC medic either already be in their company or they are quickly ushered off to this character and they take out a lizard from there sidebag and have you stare into its eyes, the PC is turned to stone and then the statue is then worked on by a medicnal mason taught in the ways of sculpture and mended to prime form. then the guts of a freshly slaughtered basilisk are slathered upon the PC and they come alive fully healed and good as new.

Basilisk deep dive… Perfect! I decided a few days ago to use a basilisk for the next quest. The PCs stole a magical yacht, so the boat repair guy said he can modify the construction if he gets the tear ducts of a basilisk. With them, he makes a tea that will sort of “pause” the magic allowing things like extra ballista ports to be cut in the sides without destroying the pocket dimension 2 of the decks are in.

I am really looking forward to running this because my players have no idea what is about to hit them. The petrification only lasts 24 hours but enough time to get up in their business and doing some damage.

ive always found the dnd basilisk and cockatrice very disappointing. i find the aspect that a basilisk is created when an egg is laid by a rooster (something that cant happen) and then is incubated by a toad (something that shouldnt happen) extremely interesting. i like the idea that they are extremely rare, cannot be manually created and have a level of power associated with that rarity. a cockatrice being basically a baby basilisk that undergoes a metamorphosis as it grows up. i would play a cockatrice as at least CR10 and a basilisk as at least CR20. their petrification is death and can only be restored by a wish spell or brought back with true res as all of their cells are replaced with stone and scrambled on a molecular level so the original body is effectively entirely destroyed. this may not be an instakill and rather con drain that kills when it hits 0 but would still be really harsh
