Basil Brown | Excavator of Sutton Hoo (The Dig)

Ойын-сауық

"You say the word, and I'll dig!"
I have a lot to say about this.
For those who probably don’t know, I study Archaeology and Ancient History at University here in England. Naturally, I find myself enthusiastic about making this video :) Like any other historical portrayal, inaccuracies are inevitable and this film made some unusual changes, however, this film retains a likable feel to it. Ralph Fiennes was great as Basil Brown, and Carey Mulligan did an exceptional job of retaining the character’s presence through the film.
I hope you enjoy the film and this vid!

Greetings. I`m from germany and I will start studying archaeology and ancient history in october. I have been looking forward to this for years but I fear it won`t be "proper" due to corona regulations... What is your take on this, or rather can you actually listen to the lectures in person and join excavation sites in england? For how long have you been studying at this point?

I finally got around to watching this stunning film and I'm so glad people are vidding it. I thought the movie would be just an insight into the archeological aspect of the history but the way that it weaved in the themes of war and the oncoming storm I think that is just fantastic. To see a nation on the brink of war through the eyes of these characters was a privilege to witness.

It is a beautifully shot film, which I tried to show in this vid. Thank you :) Theres quite an irony to it. Digging up and searching for an ancient civilisation shrouded in a lot of mystery, whilst the current world and civilisations they’re living in are about to tear each other apart. I know Basil Brown later served in civil defences during WW2 like most people had to. Suffolk and Sutton Hoo are near the east coast of East Anglia, which would face Nazi occupied Netherlands etc. Very vulnerable times for people and places. They didn’t dig Sutton Hoo for a long time after the war!

Hello Robbie. You have a really interesting field of study. In fact, I saw the film a few days ago. It's a wonderful, almost graceful film. British through and through. Ralph Fiennes and Carey Mulligan are two of the best British actors who use charm, melancholy and their toughness to give the film dignity and a captivating uniqueness. I had a bit of a problem with Basil Brown's pronounced Suffolk accent as I am German. But well ... Like Bernice, I wish you the best of luck with your studies and your future career. You should do what you love in life and I think you love your career choice. "That speaks, don't it? The Past" (B. Brown).

Hello, you’re absolutely right! Ralph’s Suffolk accent is so accurate, I think read that he had voice lessons in preparation. It is difficult to understand at times, many would probably agree with you haha. Germany? Very nice history, many prehistoric archaeological sites like Tollense Valley over there too! Thank you, it should be a very rewarding career (hopefully). I’ll continue these videos regardless. Once again, I agree with your final comments and feel lucky to be able to. Lovely use of Basil’s quote, one of my favourite lines in the film! Take care and thank you for this lovely comment GG :)

Robbie, I watched this Remarkable movie last week, I did actually think of you at the time as Tari had previously brought the subject up with you last year, I felt so sorry for Mr.Basil Brown he was so poorly treated! but did eventually receive some recognition, he was portrayed wonderfully by Ralph Fiennes as you say, I often wondered did you do any digs in the magical Highlands of Scotland! If so did you find anything of importance, I am fond of old relics as I have become one myself!! Seriously I am interested in Archaeology and some of the amazing finds there has been over the years, this is a great edit by the way, I hope you are doing well with your studies and become a Famous Archaeologist one day! 👌👋🥀

Hello Bernice. I also watched the film last week and it really impressed me. One of the best films I've seen in a long time. It's based on a true story and I read about it later. It was one of the most exciting archaeological discoveries in the history of England. Unfortunately, there is no noticeable hill in my garden in which Robbie could dig. Have you checked your garden yet? Have a nice week my Dear 🌹

Hi, there G.G.on the same track again, No there are no Mounds in my garden, just patio, I have a lovely green bank at the side of my property, probably full of old relics of the modern kind! as I was one of the first occupants on my complex twenty years ago! they had to put the debris somewhere! It is set in lovely country surroundings on a site with a 15th.Century small Castle built on the grounds, it was turned into a Hotel some years ago, but COVID has put paid to that it’s going back to being a ruin unfortunately! well take care dear friend, not long now to ‘Men in Kilts’ the movie! that should put a smile on a few faces! 👌👋🥀

Thank you Bernice, that’s very kind and heartwarming that you thought of me. It is sad, and he died without knowing that decades later his work will get the recognition it deserved. I’m sure this happened to several archaeologists back in the early 20th century however. I haven’t dug very much, especially now Covid has ruined plans. There was a university funded dig on the peninsula of Ardnamurchan, Scotland. Previous years they’d found a Viking burial ship there (similar looking to this in the film). That’d be a dream find for me. Thank you for the encouragement as always Bernice! A lovely and very kind comment that makes me happy.
