The sad thing is that if you go off official 5e lore/stats this would be easy to do, at least the getting to Primus part. A 4th tier party could slaughter hordes of CR2 pentadrones with no trouble. Granted there are no official stats for Primus but there are also no stats for the 9 other higher ranking modrons in older editions, which are necessary to stop or at least challenge the party in Mechanus. Because otherwise your only option is the Marut and its really jarring to go from CR2 pentadrone to CR25 Marut inevitable

Not exactly. In the Transformers Prime cartoon he was a being defeated by Primus and the original 13 transformers. Earth forming around him was merely a coincidence. I think the same is true for the live-action film version. In most of the other continuities he is a god and rival of Primus of some kind. I think the only one where he isn't a god was the original cartoon where he was created by scientist named Primacron.

my players split Lolth into the pure and innocent elven goddess of song and divination Araushnee and the Spider Queen of hate and chaos, and they took Araushnee home with them. They had her create a race to be interns for their acq inc franchise (yes yes, problematic, it's a game), she gifts them with song and is often sad. Then one day a half dozen mercykillers with a Marut and 30 modrons popped into their town, heading for the goddess they tried to stop the Marut They're level 9 They did not stop the Marut However they did do an asspull to keep their god friend around: they had her willingly erase her knowledge of divination, erasing that from her baby-god portfolio and changing her true name (this was a player's idea, and it's the kind of shit I am all about as a DM), so the Marut just scanned, found no valid target, and blooped away. The rest of them shrugged and left (walking over the broken party members back to their exfil point where a portal nabbed them up). One of the players kidnapped a Quadrone and is now using it as a barkeep/accountant/spy/chef Mechanicus is still not happy with them but I have informed them that the bureacracy of the planes means they've probably bought another year or so

I've always loved the fact that the Modron March means every adult in the games worldspace has seen Modrons at least once in their lives. This by extension means almost every PC has to have a background note on how their culture/family/character responds to being invaded by nosy, incomprehensible, mechanical census takers every 17 years. Bonus points if you remember that in order for their census to be accurate, they have to break into every secret location in reality every time. You wanna know where something is? Celstia for example is known to host Moradin, Bahamut, Yondalla, etc. but the plane is run by the "Celestial Hebdomad" who are 7 badass celestials. Moradin has a sub-plane within the center of the mountain known as "Erackinor" or "The Dwarf Home" which also has an exit in Arcadia, with the parts that exit in Arcadia being run by Clanggedin due to his Lg (Capitalization matters, especially in Planescape) nature.

Pretty much, actually. Since they contain a piece of the Source of Mechanus, a rogue modron effectively weakens the entire concept of order in the multiverse, as long as it's allowed to run around on its own. So when that happens, they typically get hunted down by modron hit squadrons, in order to return them to the Source so that their normally-functioning replacement can be born.

They aren't as developed in 5e, but there were these things called Inevitables that were like Mechanus secret agents; whenever someone messed with the laws of the universe real bad, an Inevitable was sent to take care of them. Just an FYI there used to be a set of hierarch modrons in older editions above the pentadrone. They started out at 10 for the decadrone and worked there way down to 2 for the secundi, who serve Primus directly. Sadly they didn't make it to 5th edition but they form the upper echelon of modron society and kinda flush out the plane a little, since if you thought the pentadrones were the leaders of the race you'd be justifiably confused that a major outer plane is run by fodder constructs weaker then human soldiers
