This is really useful, thank you for posting it. Could you also describe the accepted method for controlling a colors value? Simply adding white or black always shifts the colors chroma too. Is there a way to alter the value without altering the colors chroma?

Thank you for your comment. There are different methods for changing a colors value in terms of making it darker. The easiest for the beginner is using burnt umber which is a dark orange and using black which is a dark dull blue. Anything that is yellow.orange or red darken with umber and anything green, purple or blue darken with ivory black or paynes gray. Everything shifts when you mix it. When you mix with white the mixture goes cooler so you add a touch of the warmer side of the mixture. Same thing with black and brown as it darkens the mixture will shift warmer or cooler depending on the color and you add the warmer or cooler version of the color. It works the easiest. Hope that helps. Have a good one.

Hello thank you for contacting me the 3 primary colirs I am using are Cadmium Yellow, Cobalt Blue, and Naphol Red, the puddles of 3 are mixed from burnt umber for one and ivory black for the other. I hope this helps.

i was just about to buy 3 primaries, white and burnt umber to start oil painting then got confused about being able to mix transparents, semi transparents, semi opaques and opaques.... walked out empty handed and frustrated.

Thank you for commenting. All paints are either opaque, semi opaque, or translucent. The video doesn't go into this alot because if you use the colors in the video its not a major concern since the only color not opaque is the Naphthol red. What was it about opacity that you found confusing?

@@KevinMcCainStudios thanks for replying.. I want a basic primary selection so i can mix as many tones as possible, I think i should just go with opaques for red and yellow but the cleanest opaque yellow is a series 4 ... so basically 3x the cost. I'm not sure if a semi transparent yellow could do what i could possibly want. i suppose i could just add white lol.

Hello again its good to hear from you. I can appreciate how expensive colors are especially for someone new to painting. For new painters especially using a limited palette you will want to spend the extra money on the Cadmium yellow if you don't the other yellows are semi opaque and that makes the palette harder to control your mixtures by a factor of 10. A limited palette is hinged or built on the yellow being opaque. If to save money you can trade the Cobalt blue for Ultramarine blue which is transparent by less expensive its a minor change. The naphthol red is semi transparent but far less expensive than true cad red not Cad. Red hue some people instead of Naphthol red use alizarin crimson permanent which is completely transparent again only slightly changes to your mixing strategy. Another words getting used to how it lightens or darkens using black, brown or white. Don't change the yellow that is the key.

This is still a limited palette. If you need more color range you can use a split primary palette consisting of Cad yellow light or pale, Cad yellow deep, Cad Red light or scarlet, Alizarin Ctimson, Philo blue or winsor blue, Ultramarine blue, burnt umber and ivory black. Now this will give you 10x the range of colors as the limited palette but of course is more cost. It is however the least amount of colors that gives you the widest color range. I also have videos on using a split primary palette. I hope this helps.
