This when Sharon Stone became huge. She was a producer on Quick And The Dead. She basically called the shots. She invited Russell Crowe after seeing him in Romper Stomper an Australian film 🎥 and basically owes his career in Hollywood to her. She asked to delay filming to get him to Hollywood and cover his travel expenses. Leonardo DiCaprio was not going to be paid by producers or the studio. They didn't believe in him. Sharon Stone paid his salary. So miss Stone is awesome in my book!

This is a vastly underrated movie. The quality of the film itself was overshadowed by the attention received for you-know-what. But when you set that aside, it's a tautly written script with equally crisp direction from Verhoeven - and some world class lighting. The performances and music are perfectly suited to the "modern noir" feel. I recall doing a short term paper in film school regarding how the script is a great example of the three act format. Is it perfect? Of course not. But it's definitely entertaining. The ending is perfection. SPOILER: IMO, Curran knows she's the killer, but doesn't care - that's why she doesn't kill him.

Great reaction, haven't seen this one for 30 years. It occurs to me how much the style is like Hitchcock by way of DePalma. Sharon Stone was also in a wonderful movie called the Quick and the Dead, directed by Sam Raimi. She was at the height of her star power, and she used that power to cast to relative unknowns, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Russell Crowe. It'd make for a great reaction.

The parallel to Vertigo didn't go unnoticed, even with Paul Verhoeven himself. When he read the script and realized the setting was in San Francisco, he knew he'd be filming the movie in the same city as Vertigo. He even leaned into the parallel by having Catherine's hair and dress during the interrogation scene be modeled after one of the outfits Kim Novak wore in Vertigo.

Surprised no one seems to have mentioned it yet, but for those of us who are really old fogeys, Douglas was on an old crime tv show in the '70s called The Streets of San Francisco, and both the first shot introducing Douglas's character rolling up on the scene and the setting and premise itself are intended to evoke that feeling. Also notable *anytime* films and tv are set here in the Bay Area, let alone shot on location up here anywhere, even just for the various establishing shots. Our landmarks, geography, and cityscapes (esp. the hills of SF itself) are distinctive. All this was Back in the Day, before our city and local governments likely made it prohibitively expensive to get permits for filming. (This. The Game. The Birds. Vertigo. Star Trek, where Starfleet Academy and Headquarters are set in SF.)

Basic Instinct released in cinemas in 1992 carried a tag : "it was so hot, it gave viewers a tan"! In the neighborhood in which she resided, Sharon Stone was so hounded by puritanical-minded neighbors, she was forced to change residence. Ms. Stone went through a whirlwind of many different phases and weathered many storms with a roller-coaster of emotions. All said and done, she gave such a fantastic performance, she can never be forgotten.

Nice reaction to an underrated movie. I remember reading at the time it came out that Sharon Stone declared she had oxygen on the set because she felt bad during the homicide scenes, which she shot (being or not the killer is not in question, she was the actress on screen anyway). When she used the fake ice pick she panicked and Verhoeven simply couldn't stand there and ask doctors for help with oxygen tanks. Sexy and panicked is a strange mix, she was very good in every scene.

While I do remember DNA starting to be an potential idea, DNA sequencing was still extremely slow, difficult, and fraught with problems until.. I wanna say at least the late '90s if not early 2000s. There was much public discussion about the potential shortcomings of DNA as evidence-planted, contaminated, incomplete (because we wouldn't be able to sequence the entire DNA genome until much later).

  • @DarkLink606

That's true. The Unabomber actually foresaw forensic DNA would soon be a thing, and planted hair from strangers in some of his bombs. In Basic Instinct, it wouldn't be that useful in solving the murder case anyway: Tremell was in open relationship with the victim, and even if they found DNA samples from her in the hotel room, that wouldn't prove she was in the room at the time of the crime, she would still have plausible deniability.

Sharon Stone claims that she didn't know they were going to film up her skirt. Paul Verhoeven asked her when she came on set to remove her panties. Considering the size of the movie camera which would have been in front of her at the time that she un-crossed and re-crossed her legs, with no knickers on, I find Verhoeven's version of events to be more likely. Surely, if he asked her to remove her underwear prior to the scene, she would have at least asked why? Discussion!

In case you want to know: as Paul Verhoeven is Dutch (like me), the correct pronunciation of his name is "Verhooven". Our OO and OE are flipped when compared to English: you'd say "cool" and we have "koel" - both words sound the same. To my knowledge, "shoe" is the only English word where OE sounds like we do in Dutch.

At the time this came out, no one really knew who Sharon Stone was. She'd been on an Episode of Magnum PI (playing a woman who may or may not be a deranged killer). Michael Douglas was still near the peak of his career, so the billing made sense at the time. I saw this in theaters, and by the time I did, everyone was going pretty much to see "the scene." My memory of it from the theater was that it was too dark to see anything at all. I've seen the movie on TV (movie channel) since then, and I swear it's been edited to make it more visible. The shooting was actually pretty much done right. The problem with shooting someone in the leg is that it might make them fall, but it doesn't stop them from shooting back if they have a gun. She, more than anyone, knew he had no qualms about shooting someone, yet she continued to advance with her hand in her pocket while he pointed the gun at her and told her to stop. She also didn't do anything to try to de-escalate the situation. That's certainly not to say she deserved to be shot, but she was in a better position than just about anyone to know what to do to NOT get shot and she didn't do any of it. Another movie similar to this in many ways is Brian Be Palma's Body Double. It has clear points of inspiration from from several Hitchcock films.

She'd already been in King Solomon's Mines, Above the Law, Total Recall, and starred in 4-5 films in 1991 (including Frankenheimer's Year of the Gun). That said, you're 100% right about the billing (And Body Double).

The fade to black was where the movie was supposed to end. If you notice, when it comes back in, it replays the last few seconds of the scene. The icepick under the bed was demanded by the studio to make it more clear. Verhoeven was against it, as enough clues are in the film that show Catherine is the killer. DNA was used in a criminal case for the first time only about 5 years before this movie came out. Given Douglas's partner--who looks no older than 50--remembers the 1955 Hazel Dobkins case, I guess the viewer could handwave away the setting as being shortly before forensic DNA testing, perhaps with the movie being released in 1991-92 but being set back in 1983-84.

I laughed at your consternation over where Sharen Stone might be listed in the opening credits. This is the film that made her an A list star. Before this film she was the queen of B list films like Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold. While Douglas had been an A list actor for over a decade in films like The China Syndrome, Romancing The Stone, Fatal Attraction and Wall Street (Greed Is Good). Another actress who made such a leap is Stana Katic. She jumped from B list films like The Librarian to a leading role in the long running TV show Castle. About Michael Douglas' jaw. Look at his father Kirk. Same jawline. Same chin.

To be fair with the billing.. Catherine is the main character.. But Douglas had been a name for 20 years at this point. Stone had an Allen Quartermain film for Cannon, a Police Academy film and Total Recall.. Verhoeven was impressed with her enough from Total Recall to get her for this film, and she was fantastic. It put Douglas and Stone both on a whole new level.

It stars Jeroen Krabbe and Renee Soutendijk. Verhoeven considers this film to be the spiritual prequel to Basic Instinct!

A strong whodunnit, intense non-hero main character, and several phenomenal female characters at a time when Hollywood was awful for female characters in genre movies. Not that it's great now. Back when this came out it was rated 21, and basically all our parents were in the cinema seeing it while we all were alone at home, hahaha. Different times. Now it basically soft core p@rn. This movie is a brilliant thriller. We don't get these anymore

Love this movie, loved the commentary - spot on - this movie jump started a bit of a neo noir craze in the 90’s, nothing really matching the quality here. Need to also applaud the score, I remember being obsessed with it when the movie came out, one of the great noir themes, right up there with Chinatown and some of Herrmann’s best work for Hitchcock.

Sharon Stone steals every single scene she is in whatever the movie she's got so much confidence and power in her not only her voice but her movements her mannerisms and stature or poise...she owns the room She also has literally the perfect balance of what some would wrongly describe as girl power it's something deeper than that she's a strong woman but without being a femme fatal type or a bch or pretentious and intimidating she's just relaxed in herself it's very unique commands with her presence but not in a negative or demeaning manner.

KUDOS for reacting to this - I'm sure you've been clued in regarding that 'shot' Sharon gave the world during that interview, and prior to that, the way she says, "I'll go downtown" is loaded with innuendo. She's just so deadly, and magnetic, it's insane. This and FATAL ATTRACTION (1987) were the two Michael Douglas cautionary tales of that era. If you like this sort of thing, you'll love BODY HEAT (1981), a neo-noir erotic thriller that launched Kathleen Turner's career.
