    2nd Year Carpenter here. I'm currently in school learning this stuff and I found your videos very helpful! One thing that I might add to this is that calculating your Slope Gain Factor is a game changer for calculating your rafter length. The equation is (Rise/Run)Squared+1, then square root. This is your slope gain factor. For example a 4/12 has a SGF of 1.054, meaning the cut rafter length is 1.054 times the length of the rafter run. So 24.25 x 1.054 would calculate your rafter length from ridge to birds mouth. You can even add your overhang to the rafter run length to get your total rafter length from ridge to facia. You will need to do deductions afterwards, of course. But its a little less math. You can also find the SGF of your hips the same way but adding 2 instead. (I forget the reason exactly, I was falling asleep at that point in the Theory.) So that would be (4/12)Squared+2, then square root. 1.453 is the SGF of your hip rafter. Hope this helps anyone learning how to calculate rafters!

    Great videos, thank you. I'm building a garden shed, using a 13ft 12 by 6 inch ridge beam (locally harvested). Using normal methods of rafter construction, I would be left with a 6 inch wide flat surface on the top of the ridge, which would be difficult to sheath prior to applying roofing material. How do I measure the rafters so that they meet at the center point above the ridge beam. Are there 2 bird mouths, one for the ridge and one for the exterior wall, or only one for the exterior wall?

  • @TrainingHandsAcademy

    @TrainingHandsAcademy

    9 ай бұрын

    Yes, two "birds mouths". All you have to do is not account for the ridge thickness in your run number, then locate your ridge height and cut your birds mouth. Hope that makes sense.

    Hello, I'm building a shed and find your videos so helpful. Any chance you can help me with a question. The shed is 16 feet x 10 feet and is almost 8 feet high. My ridge needs to be 16 feet long. My question is for that size of shed, what is sufficient for the ridge? 2x6x16 or 2x8x16 enough? Or do I need to go 2x10x16? Also, I'm using 2x4 as rafters. Thank you. Romeo Suarez
