I had a dozen and I would encourage it but know the differing breeds have differing personalities. Unsolicited observations on three very common laying breeds: White Leghorn: white eggs, not the most personable or brightest of chickens but very docile. Plymouth Rock: brown eggs, smarter, stronger dominant personality with some a hair feisty. Rhode Island Red: brown eggs, personable, sweet, sociable, they're really the golden retrievers of chickens and great pets who will hang out in the garden with you; hands down my favorite of the three.
