    Definitely encourage y'all to look into becoming a veterinarian. I'm currently a tech assistant at a vet clinic, been working theres for a year and a few months. Love it, and there will be challenging times with customers and some patients that are stressed. You also want to find a place with good employees, makes the job a lot easier. Still learning a few things for myself and still deciding whether or not this is the field I will for sure be wanting to pursue.

    Some veterinary hospital and laboratory protocol will require use of exam gloves throughout venipuncture and sample handling. One often does not know your patient has infectious disease until diagnostic results are reported. Waiting until results is not good laboratory practice (GLP), or standard of practice/procedure, by state and federal professional associations and governing bodies in which we work. Removal of the needle and either direct sample into uncapped tubes or replace needle with 20g sterile needle and inject into serum or plasma separator tube, then anticoagulant tube, to reduce risk of hemolysis, which can greatly affect blood chemistry, morphology, and cell counts.

    I have 2 years experience working closely with my brother in law who trained me on site as a vet tech. However I don't have a vet tech degree. I do however, have 3 years towards a bachelors of fine arts degree which contains many basic courses with credits that could go towards a vet tech degree should I pursue one. But what I'm wondering is if I ever leave my brother in law's clinic and try to get a job somewhere else and have him vouch for me, would I be able to demonstrate my abilities and get hired without the degree?

    Just wondering why vets prefer syringe draws rather than a vacutainer type system. I need to run some pre-surgical labs on my dog and will use a 22 ga butterfly system for collection. I am a human medical technologist and just want to save $$$ since I have the best and latest instruments at my disposal. For pre anesthesia I was thinking renal panel, liver, basic metabolic and cbc w/diff, any others?

  • @robertgriego8170

    @robertgriego8170

    7 жыл бұрын

    Vacutainers tend to be more costly, and overall more difficult to use in animal medicine. Animals don't know how to sit still very well, and using a syringe allows for better control if there are slight movements. Overall, you'll notice that a lot of the fancier equipment and practices in human medicine are not so present in vet med due to costs, efficiency, etc.

    @@jessicarabbit142 Well it depends. Just for clarification, are you wanting to be a full on veterinarian or just a vet technician? Because they are actually two different paths when it comes to schooling. A veterinarian goes through about 7-8 years of schooling (4 yrs undergrad, 4 yrs vet school). Whereas a vet tech typically just needs to go through a certificate program. There are ways to work in a clinic without being certified, though.
