Thank you for making the video. Far too many owners/buyers think it can be solved with enough training, but Oringo and Makena are exceptionally well trained, and they still can be trusted off-leash! And like Makena demonstrated: they can trick you into thinking you have good recall, but all it takes is that one thing they think is more important.

I have had 5 beautiful Basejis over the pasg 40 years. Three were always taken out off leash and always responded to my commands. The 4th Basenji I received from BRAT. The dog was broought up by a volunteer from Georgia. I drove down to Maryland to pick up the dog. He was an ex show dog and the tallest Besenji I ever had seen. I was warned by the previous owner that the dog, whose name was Colt was an escape artist,. Two days after we returned home, the postman rang the front door bell. I had my wife hold Colt by the door as I barely opend the door to receive a small package. Cold wildly shook and my wife lost hold of Colt who then squirmed pass me and pushed the door open. Away he went. I chased him and actually caught him about 1/2 mile away in a narrow back yard. I had now leash but the owner of the house gave me a man's belt which I set up as a primitive leash. I was out of breath from chasing Colt but he walked well will me. When I returned to my house, my excited wife began screaming at me demanding to know where I had gone. She screams scared Colt you began back up. The belt leash loosened and he shook it off. Away he went a 2nd time. This time, I had no energy to pursue him. ,I immediately called the local police to alert them to look and capture Colt,. We sat by the phone anxiously waiting to hear from the police. About 4 hours laterm the police called. They asked me to describe Colt's appearance and color. I did so. The officer then informed me that he had the correct dog but he was dead a result of being run over on the main road in town., So the story of dear Colt came to a conclusion, I called up Mike Swan at BRAT to inform him of the dreadful unfortunate new about Colt.

oh, thats a very very sad story 😢thank you for sharing. I have heard a few similar stories unfortunately. in my house we have a set of gates so the dogs cannot get to the front door by themselves. but even mine managed to escape a few times. lucky we managed to get them back home quickly...

I never had leashes on any of my 5 Basenjis over the years. They all listened to voice commands and were obedient,

thats fantastic you were able to achieve that with your dogs! I know a few people who keep their basenji offleash, usually in a rural area on a farm, away from traffic.

We have a one year old intact boy and I only let him off with a 10 metre training lead trailing in a fenced park. A few weeks ago we went to an unfenced park and my Basengi chased a Whippet girl across the park and half a mile down the road. Fortunately the training lead snagged under a car tyre and I managed to retrieve him. They are born to be wild and will only return when they get tired or bored. Such a shame because it is such a joy to see him at top speed, close to Whippet speed but with more stamina.

Yes, I totally agree with you! many times I have to stop myself and resist the urge to let them free and run, because I know its not safe... but when they do get a chance to enjoy an open space its such a joy to watch!

My boy 1yo is getting better at whistle recall, and if he's not too distracted, I can recall him from up to 200m away. But yesterday he had his first kangaroo experience and he was hyped up for the next 2 hours while he ran around looking for more, and would barely throw me a quick glance when I tried to recall. We're visiting a friends farm with lots of space, so he's safe off-leash around the house and in the paddocks. But yeah, once their chase drive kicks in, they may as well be deaf.

thank you for your comments, that is so right! That ancient hunting instinct in basenjis is very strong! But when they can run free in a safe environment it is pure joy to watch them, its great that your boy has that opportunity!

Greetings from Turkey, we have a dog named Benji. Although, you are an exprienced owner I can see its still trickly to get them off leash. Would have loved to teach him to roam without leash in the future. Should I lose hope ? :)

Hello! its not impossible, in my view, as long as you have the following: - the dog with the right temperament - a safe area well known to you where there are no triggers for your dog and no roads - you know what triggers your dog - you have strong bond and invested lots of effort in training - you always have treats with you - the speed of the recall is not critical - you are prepared for the risk rural areas with not much wildlife or isolated beaches probably work best. I do let my boy offleash sometimes when I think the risks are low, but there were many situations when he did not obey the recall so I never have too high expectations. sorry its not very comforting, but basenjis truly are not good offleash 😬

Great video don’t have many Basenji owners near me for this type of feedback, Basenji’s are not reliable Offleash.

I have a 1 year old female basenji and I would never trust her off leash. Was on a walk one day and a lady came up to me and told me about her story of her basenji boy who she let off leash and ran straight in front of a car trying to say hi to another dog across the street. Their just a lot harder to recall when they get locked in in comparison to other dogs. Love your vids

I usually give dried salmon skin, or dried kangaroo liver, or lamb hearts... sometimes cooked beef or kangaroo meat.

I have video of my Basenji girl in the fenced backyard off leash with me calling her periodically. She never comes to me. I think at the time she is disobedient. But when watching video later, I see she is patrolling in case of danger.
