I hope you are right. I hope patience and consistency works for a 12-month-old Shepherd who is stubborn AND cunning as a fox.

I really like the criteria that you add with the collar grab. I think this "extra step" will go along way to having a useful recall. Great idea and thanks for sharing.

You’re right that only thing better than this training recall by this method is E-collar training. But for those of us who use it on our high-drive, working dogs; it’s ONLY appropriately layered on after this method is used. You’re absolutely the BEST source of info for the normal pet dog owner🙌🏼

Yes, as in, “you have to do the work” for results. It doesn't happen overnight.

I can't thank or recommend Joel enough! I had a shiba inu that's recall was never consistent, but after I moved I started doing this method without treats. (recently, I will use special treats for recall/outside tricks and obedience if she is doing great but she is happy to get a pat) Honestly the biggest progression with recall we've had was in the first 2 months, which was going from inside recall to outside with no fence.For the beginning we were focusing on leash work and minor reactivity. Then we transitioned to dropped leash method, go get, stepping on the leash ect. Pepper (shiba) still isn't perfect but she is trust worthy in some open spaces outside and we continue to make more progress 🙌

I did this same thing with my 7 month old aussie at the park this morning. First day with the harness and on a 30' line and he did very well. Only had to correct him once. Towards the end I was holding out my hand without a treat. I didn't hold his collar when he came back and will work that in tomorrow. We walked around the dog park and he was very excited but I'm not comfortable going in until II know he'll come when I call

This works! My dog thinks “Pete here!” means “Dude, you’re about to get a big reward!” He’s one year old and is great off leash, coming back intermittently to see what he might get. At this point it’s sometimes a treat but more often it’s a pat and good boy! Put in the time and you will be golden!

I hope you are right. At this point, hard to imagine my 12-month-old high-prey drive pup even remembering I exist. Just today, out for an early morning walk, she suddenly shot like a rocket after a crow. Ripped my mitten off my hand. Dog, leash, and mitten went flying down the road.

My Blue Heeler will do well on the come command and no distractions. Once there is a distraction, I'm reeling him in hard while he ignores me and barks up a storm... Still working on it! Thanks for the vid.

Joel, Thank you so much for the session. I feel like you just showed me how to solve my problem with my Shiba. She will come to me in the house or back yard. But give her any chance and she runs out and WILL NOT COME. I have to chase he in my car till she become exhausted and will then jump in the car. Too late to punish her; she would have no idea what I was punishing her for. (She thinks the chase is a fun game. WShe keeps looking back to make sure I'm following her. So - this video, I am certain, will be my "salvation" wit her. Thank you so very much!

This is the method I used for all my dogs & it's extremely successful. Except I didn't train with treats... Depends on the dog though.

You can add a audio recording camera with motion sensor on your backyard to always have a camera around and maybe capture a different angle. Those cameras can be bought for only $40 on Amazon.

I have a Shiba, most stubborn and loyal dog at the sametime. Shibas are notorious for not coming at all.

Your videos are so great. Simple and straight to the point. I also appreciate the non-clickbait titles unlike another popular dog trainer on KZread.

This is a great alternative to your "go get" method if you have a dog that's hard to "go get".

Thanks again Joel! This changed it all for me and my gundog! Now i can even get him to sit/stay, when preydrive engaged in a superfresh haretrack. He waits until i come and praise and a touch "release" him. The treat is that he can go back on track again, (witch he loves more than anything). This is the way! consistency in the training, and once in a while, a hardcore real repetition-session.

My shiba comes as long as he is enjoying the treats. But in real situation when he finds that there is something more interesting than treats or if he decides that that's enough, he will ignore. Therefore, always with long leash. One funny thing, when he thinks he behaved as expected (in different situation) he would ask for a treat even if that wasn't my idea. As for instance, he enters home and let me clean his paws without drama, he will ask me for a treat

Joel can you please do a video on bad reactivity in small confined spaces with a lot of dogs? We just came back from the vet and it was busy that day. My guy went ballistic and it was a nightmare. Normally I can prevent outbursts on walks or large spacious dog parks, but I realized today that he needs a lot more work. Please and thank you!! ❤️💜

My shiba is the same way plus he isn't food motivated. Only dog I've ever met who won't eat peanut butter. He'll take a treat from my hand but drop it on the ground and walk away lol.

I thought only my dog was vindictive. She is a 6 months lab and whenever I take away something she shouldn't be playing with, she lunges at me and bites me. I don't know how to correct that behavior 😔

Hey Beckman family ✨, That's what we have been doing for over a month. When others dogs are around the park he does some times sooo keep going until he gets it🙄🐾💌

It's hard with no place available but we're now having our house fenced and hopefully start with a much controlled environment. I'll be trying this method with a long leash and added collar grab. Our skye is now a 10 month old s.husky and trying to overcome all the myth surrounding this breed. She's quite stubborn, if thats really the term, only follows with treats. I'm hoping this method with some "twist" you showed will work for skye. Thanks for this video!

Thanks for this video. I will have to practice with a long line with my terrier mix Stella. I haven’t been able to get a recall and it’s been sad and frustrating especially because I know how much she loves being outside however there are other dogs, wild life , and cars to be aware of. I have tried other KZreadr dog trainer videos and they have been ineffective especially because my dog is energetic and a working breed. I love both of those characteristics about her but I want to be able to work as a team with her and your training methods have helped considerably!

Thanks, Joel. I'll try this method. My perfect-recall 9-month-old Shepherd pup has turned into an 'I'll-come-if-I-feel-like-it' 12-month-old young dog. SO frustrating. I do understand that I am boring compared to that squirrel up in that tree, compared to those deer tracks, etc. After two hours of her running free, I call her to get the leash on. But she wants to stay out in the woods and fields. The worst is when I reach for her collar and she dodges away. It is so aggravating; and seeing that she doesn't respect my authority gets me so upset.

Amazing! I have a tibetian mastif mix, and i used this and most of joels recall methods at the start of his training even before the stay command was perfect! now he has a realy good recall(never gonnna be PERFECT) + insane stay, can stay mid recall and mid hunt! but the breed do make their own choices and if he finds a smell he will smell it to completion then come if i give the recall. he is a: as joel would say, a soft dog. currently trying to find rabbits, deers and other wildlife to train him with.. but its hard, they be wild:P but whenever we meet a deer i have him sit and look at me and we continue the walk. He doesnt seem to fixate on them anymore. but the need to proof it, is high:P

E collar is truly godsend tool for recall. In terms of aversiveness I think long line is just the same

I differentiate between "e-collar" and "shock collar" to mean that the former doesn't apply any pain to the dog.

PS to the previous comment from me. I have a WONDERFUL, extremely obedient Boxer, who jumps in the car with me as we chase "Psoey" - the Sheba - Criminal! I have a neighbor who trains dogs for "Home Land Security." He says he now of no other way to break her bu a shock collar. I did not want to use one. SO - you have just "saver my life and my nerves. Thank you, again, so very much. I will try to send you a comment about how it goes after I've had a few sessions with her. But what if a dog isn’t treat motivated?

How long is a training session and how often would you work with the dog in a day? I have a resuce Siberian husky mix that I can't seem to get him to come when call. Been working on this a long time only command he won't do.

I found every video very helpful. Can you maybe do one where you explain leaving your dog alone for multiple hours, working fulltime job etc. I do not find allot of useful information about this. Thankyou!

YES!! It makes sense. And it's doable. And timely. I need this right now And I need help getting my teenager Pyrenees to not jump on people off leash. She doesn't do it at the gate or at the door any more, but at the beach, she still will sometimes. This seems like a good first step, but is there more??

This is great training. But in reality I don't think I have ever heard anyone at the park or wherever use come to call their dog, it is maddening. I taught classes for years and years and people seem to get it at class but it all falls apart in real world situations. They use the name as come and then don't follow through or get mad at the dog and end up punishing it for coming.

Hi Joel, like this video because shows exactly how to teach come when called on a continuous basis. Question, how long is the leash being used in the technique? Keep up the good work.

This dog is doing great, the man has more bonding than the woman, but see how this dogs watch his owner when he calls the dog, and then after two times calling the dog watches the owner then the has to pull the leash from the trainer ??? If this man made his recall more fun like squating down and spreading his arm i know for sure that the dog will come out of free will, so my opinion is try to cooperate with a no will to please dog, dont pull the dog, a good bonding is crucial for this kinda dogs 👍🏻

I'm afraid this method isn't going to work really well on Shiba Inus and other primitive breeds. I'm from Japan, and Shiba Inu is a VERY popular breed, so you don't need to be a dog trainer to know just how difficult these guys are to train. In fact, MANY dog trainers and facilities do not accept Shiba Inus and other native Japanese spitz breeds (Kai Ken, Kishu Ken, etc) because they are incapable of training them (which proves how much they suck as a trainer LOL). These dogs were never bred to listen to commands. The traditional Japanese hunting style is to let the dog do whatever it wants, where the dog will go off to find and hunt prey (deer, boars, bears, etc) solely by instinct, and the hunter only exists to finish the kill. Also, the Shiba Inu is the closest dog breed in genetics to the wolf, so a lot of their traits are wolf-like. They value hierarchy, so a Shiba Inu needs a firm, confident leader. They do not listen to weak owners. When Shiba Inus get owned by a family, most of the time they are most drawn to the father of the household, because in most cases the father is the most physically strong and dominant out of everybody. Even if the man is abusive, these dogs will be most loyal to them. It sounds strange, but trust me; it is very true. To me, the problem with these two owners is lack of leadership. Chancho clearly loves them so the bonding part of the relationship is okay, but they do not have Chancho's full trust due to their inability to be strict with their commands. I think that instead of doing the come command (especially not outside, where the stimulation is too high), I think these owners need to practice obedience training and being a calm, assertive leader inside of the house first and foremost. I am subscribed to the most trending dog trainer in Japan (Pochi Papa) who specialises in these kinds of dogs, and he says that it's all about trust and leadership. If you have both, Shiba Inu will be easy to train, but if not, they will be the hardest breed. What makes things complicated is that with these guys, you need to be dominant, but too much aversion will make them lose trust in you, and then they won't listen any more no matter how much you punish/abuse them. Finding the right balance of reward and punishment is not an easy task. Once when I was in vocational school, in one of the dog training classes, I got to handle a Shiba Inu. She really loved me and listened to all my commands......until I accidentally stepped on her foot. From that moment onward, she wanted nothing to do with me, and was constantly trying to run away. For the rest of the session, she never once listened or looked at me anymore, which was a stark contrast and complete opposite to before the accident. (Although it was a negative experience, it was a VERY educational, valuable experience for me, which I am very grateful for....for a lack of better words.) So whenever I consult someone saying that they want a Shiba Inu (or other native Japanese Spitz breed), I tell them "Do you have the knowledge and commitment of owning a human-friendly wolf?". Chancho is very well-behaved (aside from not listening to his owners of course) for a 1 year old Shiba Inu. These dogs can suddenly become aggressive around the 1 year mark (and some as early as 4 months). In Japan, they are like the equivalent of Pitbulls in America (though not as intense of course) - they are known to become aggressive, cause problems in dog parks, the most dumped into shelters, and absolutely the No.1 most euthanised breed in this country. If you go to any pound, there will always be lots of Shiba Inus and Shiba mixes. Just like with the Pitbull, many Japanese people buy this breed because they only know the good side of them (well, actually just because they look cute), but in reality they are too much to handle for majority of owners.

My girl (Zoey) (purebred Shiba Inu) is 7 months tomorrow and she likes to just look at me or go the opposite way when I call her (even when it’s meal time it can be iffy if she will come or not) and this is inside .. I would never have her off leash outside definitely at this point .. I will try this method as I take her to park and I use the long line at least 1 or 2 times per day for fetch and play time so I can add in this practice as well .. thank you

How long is that leash and at what age can you start to train this. I am getting a corso puppy in the spring and trying to get everything straight in my mind : ) Joel you are such a fantastic source of information. Thank you.

They have nice long and light retractable leashes that are good for puppies.... made for small dogs but great for large breed puppies

I got a friend with a unique situation. He comes from the country side where his black lab ran free. It will come ba k after some time chasing rabbits and stuff, but he now lives in the city. In the house the dog follows his command, once he goes outside, the dog just wants to run wild, she stays pretty calm on the leach, but if she think you took the leach off. She just run off. And that's worry for potential accident. He want to take her to an open field and let her go, but she goes too far. She's 4-5 years old and definitely looks under excerized. She needs more than leash walking, but can't trusted off leash. Any tips so I can help him? The dogs recall on leash is 80% without any leash tugs.

Was this a particular breed of dog?

I wish your training method was to train a reliable sit, down, heel, and here to the level of a service dog. I have a 5 month old BC pup and she knows all of these commands as implied stays, which IMO is the only way to do it. She is beyond obedient because of this and won’t even look at another dog while she is in heel. These dogs all have way to much freedom and excitability IMO and despite the corrections the behavior returns pretty quickly after the correction.

My collie mix 1 year old pup struggles with fear of new people. He barks, growls, and jumps on people. A lot of times it'll seem he has warmed up to new people allowing pets and even licking them. But then he will panic and start barking again. Any thoughts on how to manage these opposing behaviors? Thank you!

I like the lady's last reel in when you kept telling her pop. I hear you say it all the time but people who don't watch your videos all the time would probably have reeled in by dragging the dog rather than reeling in with pops.

Not the right way training a NoWilltoPlease dog. This women has no relationship to this dog, the man is doing better. First step is working on the relationship and make it better, by orientation work. Solid dogtraining begins with no distraction, and step by step with more distraction. 😉 Little advice : giving boring treats isn't enough for this dog. This Shiba will never be able walking offleash with this handling.

y do people use harnesses? do they really think it is better than a collar?

I like this guy but I’m not letting my shiba Inu/husky off the leash. No bueno!!!! I trained him to loose leash walk but he is too much his own being to responsibly let him off a leash

Question for you. Our Shiba has great recall one on one, but if we go to a dog park or he's distracted, we basically don't exist at that point. I would like to know how to have an effective recall even when our dog is distracted. It embarrassing when you try to recall your dog at a busy dog park, and you get completely ignored. But like I said one-on-one, without distractions, he comes every time. Thoughts?

Chris, if I may? When your dog is distracted you gotta start from scratch, like he never learned this before. This long-leash method will be the way to go at the dog-park. Our Mini-Schnauzer's just the same! 😏
