Basement Room Remodel
We have fixed up a room in our basement. This room had become our junk room. We kept putting stuff that we didn't know where to put in the rest of the house in this room. This past January, we cleaned this room out. Once the room was clean, I took apart a few things, including the ceiling, the walls, the lighting, and a workbench. Slowly over the last few months I have been rebuilding this room. I put up new 1/4 inch plywood on two of the walls and the ceiling. I put in a new sub panel, some new electrical work and new 4' LED lights. The room now has a small metal working area for me and will be a model train area for my son and a small garage type storage area.

oooh!! red pipes!! nice job Frank. That North American electrical wire system really gives me the willies!
I wonder how many architects get their hands dirty with basic construction and electrical like this? You're truly a renaissance man, Frank. Love the red pipe, btw. Much better option than hiding it, I love stuff like that. Reminds me of the Centre Pompidou.
It's always a delight to see a woodworker doing carpentry: it elevates the trade to an art.
Always so relaxing to watch you work and hear you explain things! Thanks a lot Mr. H!

Молодец деда, уважаю таких людей которые и электрики и грузчики и столяры и дизайнеры, а особенно ещё в таком возрасте. Я сам освоил большое количество профессии, очень экономит на найме сторонних рабочих.
That little giggle at the end of every vid does it for me.
Holy cow, that panel lift is so awesome. Everyone needs one of those.
Please, make a video about cleaning this grinder!

SatanicJamnic that grinder is beautiful! What a find.
Your very fortunate; a huge woodworking shop and now a metal shop.
The red pipes are freaking genius! Well done.
Love that you and your wife work on projects together.
Frank, I'm only to the 1:40 mark but I've paused the video to post, - Your wife is awesome!
Your videos are my favorite videos on the net. I don't say it enough, but thank you for making them!
"You can either hide it or you can celebrate it". A very succinct way of explaining something i've tried to explain to clients before. Would love to see a video of you cleaning up that grinder!
I like the sound of you rummagin around in the sped up part and how you point out the things you talk about.
The ceiling was bugging me the bits that were sagging at the joins, the trim made a massive difference. I would have never considered doing that, but it looks really nice. Also the same with painting the pipe red rather than covering up, it looks really good. Your wife did a great job =).
It's a decorative wood wall. Four of them. And ceiling. Plus industrial pipe. Ultra trendy modern design!
Since Frank has generously opened this video for learning comments... If I recall, when using pvc conduit, you should be using THHN wire and not romex style for two reasons. One is that the THHN wires pull/fish much easier avoiding frays and damage to the wire and also, and perhaps more importantly, better heat dissipation if wires heat up. Real fan of your vids Frank... I think you could charge for shop tours!!!
Great job! When you rolled out that lift. My jaw fell to the floor. You are amazing. Love your videos.
You have such a soothing way of telling us about the finer points of woodworking (:
Very nice. Love how that light plywood, red pipe, and exposed block wall all seem to fit together.
this panel lift made me smile.
Slowly but surely Frank is taking over the house with workshop!
I always love seeing new videos from you. Even the more mundane ones like this for some reason are very interesting and enjoyable. Keep up the good work Frank. You are a KZread treasure!
If it gets cold during the winter where you are, watch out with that insulated pipe leading outside. Before, it was exposed to the heat in the room, which even though it was insulated, did warm it up a bit. If you add more insulation then you could push the freezing point so it's inside the cavity.

Not usually, but it did get below 20F last year.
A friend had a train table suspended from the ceiling on pulleys, with folding legs for stability. Worked great, and the kids loved lowering and raising the table more than playing with the train !
Those ceiling strips are more functional than you think. Over time that plywood tends to buckle and pop the staples or pin nails. The strips will keep everything in place.
Really enjoy watching your videos. Always entertaining and I usually pick-up a tip here and there. Just make sure you put some blinds in the window's so some low life won't put your house down on his list to "borrow" from.
Awe, Frank. You are so talented. Wonderful video!
Frank, I love your videos. Going through them as fast as I can. The criticisms of the lathe wiring and the plywood/fire separation are correct and you should move on correcting them. The thin plywood will burn like gasolene. Especially with your bedroom above, you need better fire separation. Take care of yourself and keep making videos.
I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos. Thank you for doing what you do. You provide Quality videos. Your Attention to detail provides others with a model on how to do things the right way... 🇺🇸 KEEP MAKING! 😁
The US way of building houses and outfitting rooms continues to astound me. It kind of seems like you are still on the run to the west: Ever ready to leave. :)
You save yourself a lot of money by doing your own work. Great job.
His laugh is a gift from heaven
It might be a good idea to put something behind the lathe to catch chips and any oil spray etc...a clear shower curtain could work well. Great work frank!!
very nice work Frank! please paint, stain or seal the 1/4 plywood with a finish that will prevent metal filings or turnings laden with cutting oil or oil on it from splattering onto the surfaces and leaving dirty oil spots.
You have achieved the perfect ratio of commentary volume/video volume.

Wow, that panel lift is awesome.
The trim around the air duct is genius! I need that.
I would suggest putting a piece of sheet metal on the wall behind the lathe. Thanks for sharing
The spacer plates have a nice look to them! Great project, Frank.

Thanks. I thought about cutting them in creative shapes - flames, saw blades, trees..., but I could not decide on anything and went with rectangles.
A restoration video on the grinder would be amaaaaazing!!!
Whoever the next owner of this house happens to be is going to be very fortunate
Here is a suggestion for anyone working on a similar project. If you want sound proof separation between the floors, do not use fibreglass batts. Instead, use a product that's designed for the purpose: Roxul Safe'n'Sound. Not only is it an excellent sound barrier, but it is nonflammable, so contributes to delaying the spread of a fire. Easier to work with than fibreglass, and a far better and environmentally safe technology.
Nice job. The red pipes give it a fire station feel.
awesome Frank. I know you must get tired of everyone pointing out every minor safety hazard... but with a train table in there and kids, make sure you put a strap on that cabinet to the wall just to make sure it can't tip over if a kid tries to climb the shelves. just takes a few seconds and you just need a short strap and 2 screws. awesome room! can't wait to see what you make with metal!
Your videos are brilliant, your such a talented man. Even the quality of the videos, editing, animation, lighting ect is outstanding..... that’s before we get to the amazing things you produce. I would honestly consider making a movie using your shop as the set..... animated things coming out at night to finish projects you are making ( like the elves and the shoemaker )
That panel lift is awesome!
always a great source of inspiration and thinking outside the box
That painted pipe was a great idea. Nice work!
Frank, Genius as always sir! Well Done!
planning a finish out of my shop and the thin plywood walls are not something I considered. I really like it. Thanks for the inspiration and giving me something to think about.
Awesome! Can't wait for the grinder fix up video
You've got a hard working helper there.
The grinder looks cool. Great yard sale find.
Red plumbing looks great!
"It'd be nice to make more room in the workshop" says the man with the gigantic workshop of my dreams!!
This is exciting. I can’t wait to see what metal projects you have in mind.
Frank, we're both very lucky men to have wive's who aren't afraid to help with projects. Great job to you and Bonnie.
Excellent! If you "need" to get rid of any of those slabs, I would be happy to stop over and relieve you of that problem!
Wow Frank! Great start to this room. Love the red pipe 👍 can't wait to see some projects in this space come together!
An incredible amount of work. Impressive stuff!
10:40 that was really beautifully said.
Nice video as always! I really like your lifting thingy but I think a clamping system would be useful! I can see two clamping modes: Clamped via a maybe flexible handclamp, mounted on 45° on the sidearm for somewhat L shaped parts that you can clamp from below. Also you also could clamp by squishing the part between a Pin on one arm and a wise thingy on the opposite arm. Maybe mounted as a sub assembly on the side of the arm, I think that would be versatile - and cool!
This sentence is amazing: Either hide it or celebrate it! Great work.
Thanks for sharing, hope you can take us along on the train table build as well, I always enjoy how you approach projects. Good call on painting the pipe red.
What a treat to watch!
this is what I call word class. Best videos I ever have seen. Absolutely great. Can't wait for the next one.
Oh man. This was SO satisfying!
"There are two things you can do with a problem in design: you can hide it, or you can celebrate it." Yes! I say this all the time. Really like the red pipe.
Another great video. Thanks Frank!
Frank I love the heck out of your videos. Everything about your home and your workshop is so thought out and purposeful, and even the accidents or mistakes fit in wonderfully. I especially loved that little bit of design wisdom you dropped in - solve it, or celebrate it. I am so frickin' stoked to see what you guys do with a train layout. You are making my dreams come true one at a time, it's crazy.
Just fascinating stuff, Frank. I thoroughly enjoy every one of your videos and await each new one like a child on Christmas Eve! Keep up the great work, you truly are inspiring.
It's always a great Sunday when Frank uploads a new video! A fabulous organizational project, especially the painting of the pipes. Would never have thought of "celebrating" them the way you did.
You’re a wild man Howarth
Great tip, if it’s too much to hide show it off. Fun video. Thanks
My favorite part of your videos is your narration - very nice to listen to. The lift is great!
Next week... Frank Makes a garden shed to put all the things you shouldn't put in your metal shop. I'm suffering from serious shed envy!
Hide or celebrate flaws, that’s going to change my thinking a lot.
Frank, please do not forget to remove the sheathing from your wire when running through conduit Individual conductor is code, it will prevent overheating Thanks
That's a heck of a lot of work. Well-done! I keep hearing about "stone wool" products for sound insulation (thinking of your ceiling treatment). Bare wood in a basement type situation in the mid-atlantic would play host to mold w/o fairly persistent dehumidification., but that does look like a nice place to spend time being productive.
Really love your insights on the philosophy of design - why you make certain choices. And I agree with the result: the red really does celebrate the pipes!
I reused an old electrical enclosure for my mill vfd to clean up the wiring mess and to give me space to mount auxiliary control switches in a clean manner. But one thing of note, I checked the manual for a few vfd's (during my project) and found that they all said to not have any switching device between the vfd output and the motor, ala that reversing switch.
Frank please record the train building!

jamminmadrid88 as soon as I heard train table I thought "that will be one amazingly detailed layout"
Looks awesome Frank! Though with talk of a train set that close to something that will make metal chips/dust, you will probably want to make sure to put in some beastly filtration to make sure that it doesn't end up settling on the train set. That sort of stuff can really tear up electric motors and wheels over time, maybe even the track if you're unlucky.
Can't wait to see what magic you do with a train layout.
looks nice, I am looking forward to seeing the grinder restoration as well!
Great job Frank!!!!!!
I could watch you make anything! Love that red on the pipes!
Man... When I grow up, I wanna be like u!
I'm jealous of your workshop and equipment.
Absolutely Fantastic !!!!!
A metal-working lathe! Frank, you've been holding out on us.
Excellent job, as usual.
Looking great! Totally agree on the red pipe. Covering that up would be like wearing a toupee. Flaunt that sucker!
Great to see that old South Bend up and running. Looking forward to watching it make chips in the future!
dope keep up the good work dog. Praying for you. Christ be with you.
Frank, you're an inspiration to many and to myself to finally build my own workshop. Thanks for such great projects and content.
Well done, as always! You continue to serve as an inspiration and motivator, Frank!
I also have my drill press to the left of my metal lathe. What is nice about this is that when you are turning a long piece of bar stock, you can raise the drill press table and support the bar in a v-block. It works well!
