    It's hard to believe that the McCovey rookie card from 1960 is worth 50K. If you have a demolition crew,you can get one by knocking down an apartment complex in East Newark,NJ where I threw it away in 1965.

    Enjoyed the show. Old timers get lost in all these different variations. Things were sure a lot more simpler in the 60s and 70s.

Im just starting to get into baseball Have been well versed in basketball and pretty well in football, but baseball is a whole different...ball game? 😆 The most confusing parts which are different from other sports or Panini products is the true rookie (hard to know if you should go for Topps, or Topps Update, or Chrome...plus the Bowman 1st...) As well as the coded numbering for variations

    i started in 5th grade it all started when I got to choose an item from the prize box and the card that started it all was a toops 1987 Jim gatner card ever since Ive been collecting from all eras from the1970 -1986(vintage era), cards from my favorite team the mets, relics,autos , rookies ,, numbered cards and players from the Dominican republic I am 22 and still collecting. My tip is to to this responsible meaning don't buy cards into the point where you are broke but collect what you like it took me till recently to review and liquidate my entire collection and built smaller collections like Hits like relics,sigs ,vintage cards (1970-1986), numbered cards and rookie cards and some base I'm holding onto for the moment till I plan to sell them in the future like trout , ohtani and etc

    Hi I just watched your YT video, Baseball Card Collecting Basics * A Basic Guide to Collecting Baseball Cards, and thought it was excellent. I had collected for years, until my mid 20's, stopping after becoming increasingly frustrated with all the different sets, and makers, etc. I just started looking into this again and had no idea it was even more complicated now. I pulled out my old baseball cards with my son, who is becoming interested, and started going through them, and realized there are a lot of great cards in here I pulled from packs primarily. I did buy a few vintage cards as well. I have literally tens of thousands of cards that I am going through from my youth, finding a dozen Jeter rookies, Sosa, McGwire, Bonds, etc. My question is, I want to start collecting again, but do it in the manner I did 30 years ago, only sticking with rookies, no sets or packs this time. My thought was to select the best 10-12 rookies from 2022 and buy ten of their cards, and sit on them for 30 years like I did when I was a kid. I plan on doing this every year moving forward. The trouble is, now I don't know which ones to get. I assumed, from your video I should be getting the Topps series cards with e RC designation. These seem to be the true rookie cards, which is what I am after. I'm not really interested in all the shine and sparkle of the different variations unless you have a differing opinion based on what I am trying to accomplish. To accomplish this same goal with these would be unaffordable. I'd appreciate any comment or advice you have, thanks again for the video, I did enjoy it, and am looking forward to watching more. Dave

    I have to take my hat off to you! You really broke it down to the basics in this video. And you also listened to questions I had! As an old collector from the 90’s recently getting back into the hobby in 2019 things have really changed! Like you said there use to only be base cards and some inserts! Now there’s every color and what not. All that being said what makes the batting bellinger card his true rookie and not the other 3 in the same set? They all came out the same time and in the same set. I know it’s more valuable because of its rarity compared to the others but is that the only reason why?

  • @Danieljdiaz31

    Also is it true that the “true rookie card” of a player is the card that’s released the year that player is starting out the season on the major league teams roster? Or is that false?

  • @UpNorthCollectors

    @UpNorthCollectors

    Great questions! It is really hard to say on value every player is different. The Hall of Fame players and super stars usually slowly go up in value and stay pretty steady. The young guys are more risky and those might be the cards you want to sell quickly while they are hot. They can turn into the next Mike Trout or Derek Jeter but the chances of that are about 1%. Thanks for watching and I hope that helps a little bit?

    How about a "flow chart" that shows what a ball player can have. That is rookie base then three other R/C possible, a rookie first game, All Star card, then? You could explain all the possible parallels. This was a good help but you had to change player. The flow chart would show all the card possibilities and not show a particular player.

    @@UpNorthCollectors Since collecting from the 90's but then stopped. We see new brands out there like Topps, Penini, and others. They are not all the same and can be confusing to distinguish. Some cards don't even say RC on the cards. But I still look at the back of the card to see the stats and see if it is a RC or not.

    very true, it is confusing and sometimes the stats are not on the back of the cards like they were in the 80s and 90s.

    I was going through my stuff that I used in the past and I found my baseball card collections. And I found a Mookie Betts rookie card with a blue border. And I found this Kole Calhoun 2016 topps future card with a normal border color. But the back of the card feels different from the other cards and it says 99/99on the back. Also the topps sign on the front has a weird looking t which is long. What type of card is this???

    I thought 1st Bowman’s were the true rookie. As they are normally out a year prior. Topps is just the only company that has the copyright to the RC logo. More of a question than a statement. I could easily be wrong. Lol

    I've been collecting cards since 1960 and a dealer since 1978. I also wrote a book on rookie cards. Where in the hell did the term "true rookie card" come from. A rookie card is the first card of a particular player. It doesn't matter the manufacturer. Calling the Topps card the true rookie card is absurd. Starting in 1981 several companies issued traded or updated sets. These cards are rookie cards but so are the cards issued the next year from the different companies. An example is the 1986 Topps Traded Barry Bonds and the 1987 Topps Barry Bonds. They are both rookie cards.

    Topps goes overboard with the RC Logo. Rookie debut or all star are not Rookie cards. 2018 chrome update went back and gave the key rookies another RC.

    I think it is very confusing to new collectors that they put the RC logo Series 1 & 2 and then would put the same player in Update and put the RC logo on that card. I like the RC logo but if it gets over used it can cause confusion. Thanks for watching!
