That's adapted from the excellent novel by Raymond Chandler, though, so it's not at all Faulkner's original work, he just helped adapt what was already a masterpiece.

Faulkner wrote a lot of movies. So did Hemingway. You can tell how well it went because nobody ever talks about them, either because the authors just saw it as a quick way to get money or the studios butchered their work. There's a decent Faulkner called The Long, Hot Summer with Paul Newman, Orson Welles, and the lady from Murder She Wrote. The subject matter is sordid and Southern, and there are excellent performances, but you'd have no idea it was written by a respected literary figure unless you read the credits. Gore Vidal wrote a worthwhile one called Suddenly, Last Summer, in which a gay guy takes Elizabeth Taylor to the beach to arouse guys so that he can seduce them.

Graham Greene was probably the most successful of that era of "let's get great authors to write screenplays". The Third Man is a great movie that has all the depth of a talented novilist penned screenplay but accommodates the difference between print and film. They still try do that every now and again like Cormac Mccarthy writing the Councilor which sucked.
@MacIntoshMann
