Western society has it in our brains that anime is specifically Japanese animation, but in Japan, they just call American cartoons, "anime." Anything animated is anime.

I love the subtlety of the weak translation, like saying "Your laugh is incorrect," instead of something such as "You won't be laughing for long."

Sure, but when this episode aired and was produced Anime was the more widely used word. It'd be like if a show today used moving pictures to describe cartoons because that was a commonly used term decades ago. You can explain it, but it's still an odd thing to do.

Changing styles would have rally messed up with production time back then (storyboarding, first drafts , clean-ups and all that stuff). They could have outsourced it like they did recently with the Death Note parody but that Is not cheap either.

Lmao that was actually pretty cool. You can tell they were familiar with actual subbed anime at the time. Makes me think specifically of digimon with the english name call out. It captured the tropes perfectly down to the music and lines. Distinct yet familiar parody is much better than slapping a naruto headband on bart and calling it a day.

As an added dimension to the joke, these were a fairly popular toy at the time for whatever reason. A pair of small, wind-up walking sneakers, usually red and made of plastic. You'd often see them in the "attract bin" at mall toy stores along with other noisy wind-up and battery powered toys you could try in the bin like a flower that danced to music or a magnetic fishing game that was everywhere for a while.

The show was going downhill by this time, but more than half of the episodes are still very enjoyable. I was in late elementary and then middle school during that era, and while the show still had several pretty good episodes, it wasn’t as good as when I was a lot younger (yep, I got to grow up with the glory years of the show!)

@@wizardoferror9942 Yep! Though of course I think they screened some of the episodes first. Plus, in the early 1990s, the show was fairly raunchy, but nowhere as raunchy as the much later seasons, or “Family Guy” or “South Park” or whatever. In fact, at such a young age, I was amazed at how a cartoon could be pretty realistic, even with the yellow-skinned humans. (I especially remember that with watching “Lisa’s First Word” when I was four years old; the scene where Patty kisses baby Lisa reminded me so much of when some relatives would kiss me.)

@@ZakWolf Exactly. Here’s something I must address about a show’s decline in quality: some episodes of recent seasons of a show can still be good. Family Guy has had a lot of eh or crap episodes in seasons 7, 8, and 9, but there are still some very good episodes from those seasons. So when I owned Volumes 6, 7, 8, and 9, there were select episodes I only went back to. Too many to name. Edit: I got bored of South Park fast. They kinda overstayed their welcome after seven seasons IMO. The series died when Chef left.

Mostly just BotW, AoC and TotK, in the N64 days, they used to dress like Persian belly dancers, with those shoes usually associated with genies with the curled pointy tips in front (did Persian belly dancers even wear shoes?). It's based on an 80's anime called 'Totemo Damasa re Yasui", there's a temple priestess named Chuko Shitagi who loses her legs during some sort of accident caused during a fight, and a scientist replaces her ruined legs from the hips down with a mechanical mermaid tail. The enemy faction does have a man who can turn into a mechanical wolf, but he's not a very important character.

Not anime-like enough. Not enough characters screaming at the top of their lungs. Or characters using a really bizarre attack then stopping the whole fight to explain how their convoluted ability works for 5min or so. Or characters being surprised by their enemy then internal monologuing for too long like "What? How did my attack not work? What is this incredible power I never have seen before?" or something like that. Or characters standing with their arms crossed bragging for too long about their Power Levels and how much percent of their power they were using.

I hate that they didn’t show what Lisa said afterwards, that was funny.

I remember watching this and knowing about anime and having a good laugh about it....Nice to watch it again.

And just last year they made an anime segment for Treehouse of Horror.

Nobody is going to mention the booth of unsold Poochie merch in the background?

Dear god, that was amazing. I feel like I should be ashamed to admit that I would 100% watch whatever show that was. x_x

Man I'm not the biggest Anime fan but this was one of the weirder Simpsons scenes but it's weirdly funny lol.

I like how Princess Tempura literally says "Transform: Mega Shrimp Tempura!" when she transforms. 😂

The flag at the end is amazing XD

I prefer this to the original scene from HOMR, great job.

I got to say this video looks really cool

It never ceases to amaze me how well the Simpsons writers back then completely understood and conveyed what anime is.

Watching the clip over and over, I feel like Princess Tempura's voice could either be Megumi Toyoguchi or Kikuko Inoue. I may be wrong, though.

This is absurdly epic

This is genius by the Simpson writers. Not only did they a get a badass looking anime into the series, but they completely slipped in another trope with Tempura's flesh toned suit from behind.

I would watch this in a heart beat

The entirety of Beast Wars' japanese dub feels like this

I still remember watching this when it first premiered. So funny.

Watched it solely in thumbnail preview and I missed out on nothing. Simpsons visual jokes on point.

I've always watched this in Spanish, so I didn't know that in the original it had Japanese voices and it honestly makes it 100 times better XD

It didn't. This video has been edited to include the japanese version of that scene.

If they are a cartoon watching another cartoon. Does that mean they are watching a live action scene? Also, something that I noticed is how the anime characters looks like toys, that they sounds like they were recorded in an VHS and how the bad guy escape by transforming into another toy just lile the transformers one.

Being a DBZ kid, I'd totally watch Princess Tempura MegaNaut.

This is only the second time I have ever heard the phrase "Japanimation." The other time was in Excel Saga. The show Bart is watching must be a special cross over one like Isekai Quartet. Only it's Jashin-chan and Strike Witches.
