Barry Roubaix 62mi - (Wave 1) 2023

Tough day on the bike at the 2023 Barry Roubaix. Only 5.6 miles into a 64 mile race I got caught behind a rider that unexpectedly braked and within a second on was on the ground (0:15:00). The Barry Roubaix is a gravel race that was held in Hastings, MI on April 15, 2023. This was the 62 mile - Wave 1 race.
The beginning of the race had several sketchy parts that I've highlighted in a separate video. What seemed to be a theme were riders often braking too much for what appeared no reason. I'm assuming everyone felt the tension and nervousness of the bunch and after a few close calls were on the brakes even more. In my incident, the rider in front of me grabbed a bunch of brakes all of a sudden that I had no time to react. I hit his back wheel and frame that kicked out my front wheel and I was on the ground immediately. Unfortunately several riders were also caught up in the mix but it appears everyone was at least able to continue.
I was frustrated looking back at the video realizing there was no one in front of him and I can't understand why he felt he needed to brake so aggressively. Unfortunately I couldn't stop in time and I had my first ever gravel crash. What I didn't realize at the time is that I had fractured a rib, cracked my helmet with a likely concussion and had road rash from my ankle to shoulder.
I collected all my gear and realized my cockpit was a mess from the crash. I grabbed my multi tool and straightened the handlebars, wheel and shifters the best I could. I regrouped myself and continued on to see if I could. I wasn't able to move my right shifter up so that remained significantly lower than my left. I could hear my front rotor was rubbing a bit as well. I was in pain but thought I could continue so I did. After the initial shock wore off the pain settled in and I knew I was more messed up than I originally thought. I wasn't able to stand for the remainder of race due to pain so I had to grind out everything seated. To make matters worse I ran out of water and was quite dehydrated, but was just able to make it to the finish yet beaten and battered.

Ouch! Amazed you could finish after that and that you would want to. This kind of stuff is why I see a lot of club riders not want to draft directly for fear of the same thing happening to them. You are officially one tough dude.

It was crazy. Probably shouldn't have continued with a broken rib and concussion, but glad I was able to finish without further issues.

Hello sir late comment if I may I took time to watch the whole race, and on my opinion you are a great athlete you can go far in cycling but the problem that I noticed is your ability when you approaching an uphill you change your gears to late you change them when you are already on an uphill not before it that's why some couple of guys overtaken you on an uphill and I acknowledge that you had a crush I hope you recoverd but all in all you are a great athlete... ☮️

Man that’s a tough job, but the lesson I would take from this is, get a top tube bag so you don’t lose everything in your pockets If you tumble, and everything is at hand and you can access the gear situation faster. But yeah my two cents but hard braking is all part and parcel,, you trust the guy in front of you. I once was in a winning break only to puncture because the guy in front didn’t signal a rock was in the way and I punctured and I was screaming at the dude… I egged on the bunch as they passed… freakin bastard stole my sunshine that day. I was in a position not often gifted when the move is right,, the legs are good and the bunch are not willing to chase just yet. Yeah war stories on the bike.. we all have them. But you finished dude which is amazing, sometimes it’s not always possible.

I concur. Saw a lot of sketchiness in your vid. Appears wave 1 had many newbies, and I thought it was reserved for riders with at least one BRX under their belts. No reason for that guy to brake. I spent most of my time in wave 2 repositioning to avoid the rear wheels of others. Seems like 40% of the riders need a basic reminder of what "holding their line" means, and more judicious use of the brakes.

I agree. I think with how big that race is they need more than just self selecting waves. I don’t know what the fix is, but it needs to be something.

Agree with the others about how sketchy that group was - saw another video from BR where the group (I wanna say it was wave 2?) the guy was in was flying, but they all seemed pretty predictable. At BWR San Diego this year, I had a dude slam on his brakes in front of me coming into a damp turn (on the road) - didn't look like much in my video because the Hero 9 really smooths things out (and made him seem further away than he really was), but I was starting to lean into the turn and the front tire got a bit squirrely (but kept it upright). The guy in front of you seemed to have some daylight between himself and the rider in front of him.

looked like that rider brake checked ya. There was at least 1 or 2 bike lengths in front of him, when he just decided to scrub speed like that. SKETCHYYYYY

Yah, he did it once in front of you (over braking), and did it again at 5.6 miles. Something to consider about repeating behaviors.
