Handel remained known because 1) UK had fewer great 17th century composers so Handel was more likely to be remembered 2) It was Handel's religious music. Church music was always expected to more conservative and old fashioned instead of showing the latest fads and trends in music. This was known as Stile Antico. 2) UK was old fashioned with music compared to the continent. For example, the last concerto grossos were composed in the U decades after being passed on the continent. Pieter Hellendaal wrote 6 concerto grossos in 1758 in the UK. These were even still in a baroque style. UK still uses old Renaissance note names like "minim". UK still sometimes used meantone temperament until the mid 19th century.
