I'm thinking he's gonna be a top pulling horse, champion at horse pulls. Stallion is a fly in the ointment. Anyway his seed is saved, Jim's having it both ways. If you really know horses, and have kept stallions, you would not ask such a question. Jim's is a working outfit, stallion not steady enough to be able to relax around. Stallion changes the whole dynamic of any farm.

Now is a good time to have Baron's castration done. No flies to make the healing process take longer than it should. You know best, Jim. You know what you want to deal with and what you don't. So, you have my vote. Both of my geldings were done in the late summer to early fall. It sure made it easier to not to have to worry about going out and hosing them down to keep the bugs away and for any swelling they had also.

Also, big winter of logging coming up, Jim needs to be able to relax and get into it. Baron will be much more focused and ready for next summer's competitions, a force to be reckoned with. I knew a few late cut horses, performance horses, very wise and steady.

When my children were small our neighbor gave us a rooster and we were going to butcher it. but before I got to do that, the kids let it out of the cage and was playing with it. We had a Peek-a-Poo dog and they thought it would be fun to get the dog to chase it around the yard. Then it was Dad, we need your help, Bengie is stuck, What? so I go and see what's going on, and what happened was to dog was after to rooster, and the rooster flew up in the air, and the dog jumped up to try to catch the rooster, and the dog came down right into a burdock bush and was stuck! So I had to get a pair of scissors and cut the dog out of the bush! And we did get the rooster and ate him! Good job on the shed, looks great! Good Luck with Baron! He's your horse and you can do whatever you decide!

I love the short tails, it looks awesome on draft horses. My Shire had a longish tail but it was pretty unhealthy at the bottom so I ended up cutting it up about an inch below the end of the tail bone, she looks so good with a short tail. How it can grow back out healthy and I can maintain it, and may even keep it shorter. It just looks so good. People can hate it all they want but these are YOUR horses and you can cut their tail or foretop however you want

Always a pleasure to see you all. I hope every thing goes well for Baron. it is a shame he is going for the surgery but you are right he is your horse and you have to do the right thing for you and your situation. Stallions can be a real handful at times especially when a mare come into heat. they are just walking hormones. Lady is getting up there in age now so she doesn't need to become a brood mare. William i apologize for not remembering your name on Thanks giving but i love the work you did on the shed. The Amish people are great carpenters and craftsmen and women. it takes a lot of discipline when you are doing things that you have been taught to do things the right way. William you did a fantastic job building that shed. Great workmanship.

Never apologize or worry about what someone might say about your decisions. You know what is best for you, your family, your farm and your horses. When I, or one of my siblings, became too worried about what people would think about a decision we had to make, my mother would say “beware lest all men speak well of thee“. I’m sure it’s biblical as she frequently used little phrases from the Bible to make her point. Her interpretation of the phrase was that one should do what they think is best and try not to please everyone or you will never make a decision and when you do, it might not be the one you know would be the best.

Thank you for taking the time to teach about docked tails, Jim. It is important that horseman step up and teach. I met yet another person yesterday who believes everything a certain "animal rights" group says without question. They can only tell lies in the absence of truth. When you shine the light of truth on them, it becomes quite obvious how ridiculous their stories are. Years ago, a friend of mine had a pamphlet in her car from that organization, which claimed that wearing furs was immoral because big cats were put down for the fur trade by ramming a red hot poker where the moon don't shine. The pamphlet went on to say that this horrendous act was done to the cats while they were fully awake, and that they couldn't be anesthetized first without damaging the furs. I asked her if she believed it, and she affirmed that she did. I asked her to show me the guy who held the unanesthetized lion down while this happened... You couldn't hold a house cat down for that, let alone a lion, tiger, leopard, etc. I'm not saying I want to wear big cat fur, but at least come up with a plausible story. The more we question, teach, and explain, the more people see truth. William did a very nice job on the shed. That is lovely, and should last a lot of years. Not only would it make a good shed, but it would also make a great hunting cabin. Several guys could bunk in that and still have room for a folding wood stove. It would probably make a good ice fishing shack as well. I understand the decision to geld Baron. No criticism is implied or intended. I just never knew what a nice breed they were until you got yours, and I didn't know how endangered they were until my daughter looked it up. You an I are probably a bit long in the tooth to be able to do anything for the breed, and you have done quite a bit by saving semen from Baron. You actually may be doing more for the breed simply by putting those three colts on youtube daily, so that people see how nice they are. If young folks don't step up and start raising some of these tough old blue collar breeds, they will be gone. So many of these tough little working class breeds have been shoved aside be flashier, showier breeds, which often aren't as tough, aren't as sound, aren't as good tempered, and don't have as many good, working years. Many of the other little working class breeds have allowed interbreeding with other breeds to "improve" them, until they aren't the same breed, and don't have the same utility. What happened to the little bulldog Quarter Horse? It has been interbred with Thoroughbreds until it is more Thoroughbred than Quarter Horse. The tough little Morgan has gotten interbred with Arabs and Saddlebreds to make it taller and showier, and now where is the good tempered little horse that you could plow with? I got my head turned when I was young by flashy Saddlebreds and Tennessee Walking Horses, only to realize that my little Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horses, which had no breed registry back then, and were just the ubiquitous little saddle horse of our area, were much more useful, much sounder, much more comfortable to ride, and are now quite endangered as well. My older pony was sound and rideable right up until she died at 28. Her daughter was a few weeks shy of her 35th birthday when she died, and was sound until her last few months. Her sire also made it well into his thirties, and was sound to the end. We need to go back to valuing the horses that are sound, tough, and able to do a job.

You might consider building small chicken coops if you have a market for them there. It would be easier to ship as well. I can understand the castration as I've watched our neighbors try to deal with two stallions and multiple mares over the years! You certainly don't need that challenge 😉. 🎉 My new calendar came and it's just Beautiful ❤️🎉! Thank you Brenda! Looking forward to another year with those stunning pictures! A neighbor even had a shed made for his snowblower tractor just outside his back door so he didn't have to wade drifts to his barn. I use a small Sears cart behind my ATV or garden tractor to hold my tools, row marker stakes, hoses, and fertilizer and use a tool rack and 5 gal. pails to keep things separated. Both methods work.

Jim, you know best what you need to do with your horses. And deciding you do not want Barron to be a Stallion is your business. You save his sperm in case someone wants to cover a Mare. I respect your wisdom in training your horses, working your horses, and if you want to not have Barrin be a Stallion. I also enjoy watching you plow with the horses, as well as harv sting Hay, and logging. And Enjoy watching the The Pulling.

I'm terribly sorry for some of the rude comments I've read. I'm happy you finished up with plowing the cornfield before winter sets in! And Duke and Earl were great getting their forelocks trimmed! Hoping you all have a beautiful Thanksgiving with all your family there!! Jim will get to see and hold the new baby granddaughter for the first time. Bet she's grown a lot since you were with her, Brenda!😘 And I bet you prepare a huge Thanksgiving meal that the family looks forward too!!! It will just be me and my son to celebrate Thanksgiving at my house, so I don't have to cook a large quantity of food though we both love all the fixings which I plan to cook. My favorite things are my cornbread dressing, mashed potatoes, and gravy to go over both!!!! I could just have that and be happy! Neither my son or I care for turkey, so I'll be baking a chicken for us. Please tell William I love the shed he built. He did an excellent job. Also tell him I wish him and his family a Happy Thanksgiving!!!🦃

Nothing beats shoes removed, testicle's removed, released out to the pasture, then told there go and in joy, yourself, 😂😂 maybe if he was aware of todays itinerary ourcome, he maybe would want to renegotiate the terms. 😢😂😂. My daughter at 8 years old consoled her 4 yearold that he would become a better horse . The vet was trying to be professional, but i could see him shaking with laughter. Now at 28 he is going strong and her boys age 4 had pictures taken with him,

I think thats the best horse picture I have ever seen. Bree between her two uncles. Watching mom go by. 😢 Life goes on. Why I shed a tear over Barons alteration I don't know. He will probably be a much happier animal now.😊 Everyone in the family will be safer. Love to you all.

Makes me laugh how Jim likes to make the horses look like they have docked tails (I know they aren’t really). He says it’s for burdock, but I think he just likes them to look like tough work horses! 😂 horses don’t care, so whatever makes you happy to look at them is all good.
