This must be the time of year farmers work with the pigs. We have a field around our area and it now has about 50 free-ranging pigs in it. There is a couple of feed boxes in it. I have not noticed any shelter yet but there are plenty of long weeds and grass in it. During the summer the area had sunflowers growing in it then early fall there was black angus. I love to see the grandkids enjoying Grandpa and William's pig show. They are not afraid or are they of squealing pigs.

We castrated a 5 year old stud years ago and the guy who did it said to saddle him up 2 times a day and ride him for an hour twice a day until the wound was almost healed. Had no problems with him. The guy who cut him tied him down and used mascilators on him.

Vielen Dank!

LG -Chris

Hey Jim, I've got an idea for you. I know coming up with ideas for topics to discuss gets difficult as you do this for multiple years and the farm cycle kinda stays the same year in and year out. My daughter has gotten really interested in breeds and breeding lately, particularly since she has been listening to your videos from across the room as I watch them. She has always been interested in rare and heritage breeds, particularly Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horses as she got to ride one of mine when she was little, and Morgans, because of loving Laura Ingalls Wilder. Now she is getting really interested in the Suffolks as well, from listening to your channel, enough that she is getting up and coming over to actually watch with me. Anyway, she's been peppering me with questions about comparative conformation. She wants to know the nitty gritty details in differences in conformation between your Suffolks, Belgians, and Percherons. She's asking me questions like which breed has longer pasterns, which has longer cannon bones, who has the longer back, and how does that affect their power, soundness, etc. If you've ever looked at the old pictures they used to take at state fairs that were a mare and her progeny, or a stallion and his get, or all the mares of one breeding farm, or all the stallions of one breeding farm, those are the kind of information she is wanting. Many of those photos made it into college textbooks as examples of the pinnacle of the breed. It would be quite interesting and useful to see photos like that, of the horses stood up together from behind, from in front, and from the side, where is was possible to compare the similarities and differences among them, while they are all in the same position. It would be useful to see the Suffolks together so you could compare them, but it would also be interesting and useful to see all of them together, so you could see the differences among them. www.alamy.com/judging-farm-animals-livestock-chapter-vii-the-comparative-study-of-draft-horses-it-is-assumed-that-the-student-through-the-use-of-the-score-card-has-become-acquainted-with-the-points-and-general-conformation-of-the-draft-horse-with-this-in-strument-he-has-attempted-to-analyze-and-measure-the-value-of-the-points-of-the-individual-ak-a-matter-of-progress-in-the-study-of-animal-form-it-is-necessary-that-comparisons-be-drawn-between-individuals-if-two-horses-of-the-same-tjpe-stand-side-by-side-it-is-entirely-natural-to-make-at-once-a-comparison-between-them-two-horses-are-never-mat-image232335742.html

I was always told after castration, animals should have light exercise, but no pulling ,lifting,or anything strenuous for a couple of week then only light work…..

In my humble opinion, it was a difficult but very wise decision on their part. A stallion can be very dangerous no matter how careful an owner might be. Mares can be difficult as well during their heat cycle, but not quite as dangerous as a stallion. It was very clever to keep his sperm in a bank.

I take it that, being a draftie, Baron hasn't been taught to lunge? That would be an easier way to trot him than having to run with him for the duration!

Lunging is okay and it can be to tight. leading the horse allows flexible sensitivity to the post surgical capacity of the horse.

About four hours away. Just A Few Acres is way south, not far from Rochester. Jim's farm is not far off from the Canadian border.
