David Browning is a great guy. I've met him in 4 or 5 different minor league ball parks, a number of times in Hickory NC. I was there the night he took a bad fall in the bleachers, scared everyone but he seemed to be alright. He gives you a signed picture of him as Barney like he's giving you a ticket, I love it. keep doing your thing David.

David Browning has been to "Mayberry in the Midwest" (Danville, Indiana) as Barney for several years. Someone else has impersonated Barney the last few years. Anyway, about four years ago, David decided to stop heavy traffic at a busy crosswalk. He was wearing his deputy uniform, and he just held out his hands and started walking across the street from the Mayberry Cafe to the courthouse square. All the cars stopped. As he passed me, he smiled and said, "It worked!" I burst out laughing. 😄

I was born in 1964, grew up watching this show, and still watch it today. I’ve been a metro cop for 36 years, and loved watching Barney Fife, as a deputy, but I never allowed myself to be so serious as a cop, because I wanted to be easy going like Barney.

But I’ll be 56 in March, yet my Sargent is 29, but he’s smart, energetic fella, yet he doesn’t put pressure on me to retire like my last Sargent did once I had 32 years in, he didn’t understand I really needed the off-duty work to finish getting all three of my kids out of law school. “To protect & serve utilizing the color and spirit of the law” Thanks fellas & God Bless.

Right! It was not just the departure of Barney that ruined the show, it was the change in Andy's personality. They say, "you can't take the country out of the boy", but just look at the difference in Andy in the earlier shows compared to the 6th year and on. Andy was no longer a country boy. He was not funny after the change. The change in Andy's character actually began in the 5th year, while Barney was still there. There was a few episodes with Andy and his new "sophisticated city boy" persona, and these episodes are stinkers, as were most all the episodes after the 5th year. And, of course, "Warren" didn't help matters any. "Huh? Yeah. Huh? Yeah. Huh? Yeah." Gimme a break!

  • @misharyutubbee

Yes, they intended to make Andy more of the "straight man," but I think they went too far. He turned into a damned grouch and much too serious all the time, Perfect example: He started snapping at Aunt Bea and giving her orders, like telling her to go pull that wig off. If Aunt Bea wants a wig, shut up and get out of the way!

Griffith had no one of quality to play off of once Knotts left. The chemistry was gone, no matter who was featured in a particular episode. Ronnie Howard was great in episodes that featured him but he was a kid and could not be expected to do that every episode. Knotts was said to be meticulous in rehearsing his every exact move and nuance in his comic acting but made it look spontaneous. it seemed once Knotts left, it was a totally different version of the show, color TV or not.

Steve Allen originated the Tonight Show. Don Knotts was part of a nightly regular skit where Steve did a man on the street bit with Louis Nye, Tom Postom and of course Don. Circa 1953/4. I never forgot how funny those 4 were with Steve as the straight man. Too bad the talk shows were ruined with all the negative politics. I haven't watched in years.
